The Lower Half of the Champs-Élysées Avenue in Paris, France
A 15-minute video showing the lower half of the Champs-Élysées avenue in Paris, France. This famous avenue is divided into two parts by a roundabout—the Rond-Point des Champs-Élysées—at roughly its midpoint. The higher (northwest) part between the roundabout and the Arc de Triomphe is mostly commercial, with many high-end shops and restaurants. The lower (southeast) part between the roundabout and the Concorde roundabout is mostly parkland, with a few theaters and famous restaurants. This video shows the latter portion of the avenue (I have a separate video that shows the upper portion, which you can see here: The parkland is divided into squares and gardens technically, but in fact they all kind of blur together into one big park. This area of the avenue includes the Théâtre du Rond-Point and Marigny theaters, plus restaurants like Ledoyen and Lenôtre, not to mention the Grand and Petit Palais and many nice places to relax.
Most touristy videos of the Champs-Élysées only show the commercial upper part with all the fancy shops and restaurants. I have a video that shows that part myself. But I thought someone might be interested in seeing the parkland area of the avenue, too.
All photography took place on June 21, 2012 (the summer solstice), which also happened to be the Fête de la Musique, although there aren't too many signs of that on the avenue. Some thunderstorms interrupted shooting and the skies kept alternating between overcast and sunny (typical weather for this time of year in Paris).
A Walk Down The Avenue des Champs-Élysées, Paris
The Avenue des Champs-Élysées is an avenue in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, 1.9 kilometres (1.2 mi) long and 70 metres (230 ft) wide, running between the Place de la Concorde and the Place Charles de Gaulle, where the Arc de Triomphe is located. It is known for its theatres, cafés, and luxury shops, for the annual Bastille Day military parade, and as the finish of the Tour de France cycle race. The name is French for the Elysian Fields, the paradise for dead heroes in Greek mythology.
It is one of the most famous streets in the world.
The avenue runs for 1.91 km (1.18 mi) through the 8th arrondissement in northwestern Paris, from the Place de la Concorde in the east, with the Obelisk of Luxor, to the Place Charles de Gaulle (formerly the Place de l'Étoile) in the west, location of the Arc de Triomphe. The Champs-Élysées forms part of the Axe historique.
The lower part of the Champs-Élysées, from the Place de la Concorde to the Rond-Point, runs through the Jardin des Champs-Élysées, a park which contains the Grand Palais, the Petit Palais, the Théâtre Marigny, and several restaurants, gardens and monuments. The Élysée Palace, the official residence of the Presidents of France, borders the park, but is not on the Avenue itself. The Champs-Élysées ends at the Arc de Triomphe, built to honour the victories of Napoleon Bonaparte.
