Political Food Manipulation in Zimbabwe
Think Africa Press has obtained a film revealing rival political parties in Zimbabwe using food and farming inputs to manipulate voters ahead of elections scheduled in July 2013. Made up of footage obtained from various meetings, the video highlights the ways in which both ZANU-PF and the MDC-T use the promise of farming supplies in a bid to secure votes.
The video begins with an MDC activist explaining that when the political environment is active, parties look for a way to keep people close, and in a environment of drought and hunger, the promise of food and farming supplies is one of the most powerful methods of ensuring this.
In the town of Bindura, situated 88 miles north-east of the capital, Harare, ZANU-PF distribute maize seeds under strict instructions that the seed is for ZANU-PF supporters only. Meanwhile, an MDC-T supporter based in Shamva, Mashonaland Central Province, explains that those who acquired fertiliser from the MDC-T party will not receive anything from ZANU-PF.
The video ends with footage of ZANU-PF officials warning supporters that if they share their seeds with individuals who demonise the president, they will be arrested and taken to jail.

Mugabe Speaks At A Rally In Bindura. Complete Speech In Audio
NOTE Speech in Mugabe's ethnic Language.
Addressing about 3 000 Zanu PF supporters at a rally in Bindura last week, Mugabe also claimed Wednesday’s massive anti-government protests were sponsored by the country’s detractors who did not understand that Zimbabwe was under sanctions. He said teachers, doctors and nurses, who went on strike demanding their delayed salaries, were doing so because they had never been subjected to the suffering his generation went through to liberate the country. Mugabe said there was nothing unusual about paying civil servants late. “Those who go on strike, they do not understand our problems. It does not mean we are poor, but we are getting our money late because of sanctions. Businesses are not banking their money. This is where we take the money to pay our civil servants,” Mugabe said. “We will address it. It is temporary. Teachers, nurses and doctors go on strike when we only delayed their salaries, not that we will not pay them. It is because some of them do not understand how bad things are because they have never been in the liberation struggle. There was no money, but we sacrificed.” Mugabe said protesters and striking civil servants should understand that the country was under sanctions and its money was being intercepted. He said the decision to print bond notes was to counter the challenges the country was facing as it could not print the United States currency. The 92-year-old leader claimed bond notes were real money and urged people to embrace them. He also warned the military against using force against churches that have voluntarily supported the party. The remarks came amid reports that Mashonaland Central-based Vadzidzi VaJesu Apostolic Church founder and patriarch, 94-year-old Aaron Mhukuta, also known as Madzibaba Wimbo, was being held against his will in Madziwa and that of his family by church zealots, who have allegedly been making money out of him for over a year now. Some top military officers were allegedly protecting Wimbo’s abductors amid reports that one of his sons was left for dead by soldiers after an ill-fated attempt to rescue the church leader. Mugabe visited Wimbo’s shrine before attending the rally. “Guns cannot lead the party. The party is bigger than the gun. We want this to be known. Others from the military might have forgotten this. We should not deploy soldiers to harass our people,” Mugabe told the Zanu PF supporters. He apologised for keeping people waiting for him for the whole day, saying his visit to Bindura was meant to address challenges facing Zanu PF in Mashonaland Central province. He said because of time constraints, he had failed to resolve the burning political issues in the province and had appointed a committee to try to build peace in the struggling party.

Zimbabwean schools rocked by ‘Satanism’
Parents in Zimbabwe are concerned that cases of “Satanism” may be on the rise, especially at the nation’s boarding schools.
A few weeks ago, Zimbabweans were shocked to hear of a school in the Mashonaland East Province that was closed following allegations that a male teacher at the school was involved in Satanism.
According to informed sources, the teacher was accused of practicing Satanism to the point that students were being possessed by “evil spirits” and, in some cases, going hysterical.
As many as 480 children at the Zinatsa School were reportedly affected to the point that their guardians withdrew them from the school.
A second school in the same area, Chideme Secondary School, was similarly affected a few days later, prompting officials to intervene.
Last year, similar incidents occurred at a school in the same province, the Nhowe Mission, where a girl had her throat slashed in mysterious circumstances.
In an indication of how widespread reports of Satanism have become in Zimbabwe, two schools in capital Harare, too, were similarly affected.
At one school in Hatcliffe in the capital’s northern suburbs, two girls reportedly developed canine teeth after allegedly being given amulets by their teacher. A commotion also ensued at a primary school in Harare’s Kuwadzana Township when parents stormed the school to demand an explanation.
One fourth-grader’s body reportedly took on the colors of a snake, while other children from the same class developed tattoos that allegedly caused their classmates to become hysterical.
Calm was eventually restored following the intervention of the police and a local legislator.
While Zimbabweans who spoke to Anadolu Agency said Satanism does exist in some schools, the authorities adamantly dismissed these claims.
“There is nothing called ‘Satanism’ in Zimbabwean schools. When these kids go to school, they do so with different ailments. Some of them start fainting during examinations – that’s not Satanism,” Education Minister Lazarus Dokora told Anadolu Agency.
Dokora said his ministry used “scientific research” to confirm such claims, none of which, he asserted, had turned out to be true.
“We receive such reports from time to time. But without scientific proof, there’s no way we can confirm Satanism exists in schools. In actual fact, the kids suffer from anxiety,” Dokora said.
“People might call it ‘Satanism’ because of what they hear at their churches,” the minster added. “But we see most of these incidents at examination time; they are due to anxiety.”
But George Kandiyero, head of Zimbabwe’s Traditional Healers Association, said that “Satanism” was simply a new term for witchcraft – a phenomenon, he said, that had always existed.
“As traditional healers, we don’t acknowledge the existence of Satanism. But, yes, witchcraft is there, including at schools,” Kandiyero told Anadolu Agency.
Satanism, witchcraft
According to psychologists, most Satanists, devil worshipers, diabolists, Luciferians and members of the Church of Satan derive their beliefs from “LaVeyan” Satanism – a reference to Anton LaVey, considered the founder of modern Satanism.
“We only started hearing about this Satanism issue from the [Christian] churches; otherwise, it’s not known among us Africans. We have our own ways, culture and beliefs,” Chief Madamombe, a young Zimbabwean traditionalist from Kenya’s Masvingo province, told Anadolu Agency.
“I subscribe to Kemetic beliefs, which I would call ‘witchcraft.’ What is happening in the schools is purely witchcraft, based on the reports coming out of the boarding schools,” he said.
Madamombe agreed with the education minister that most reported incidents were mere anxiety attacks.
Kandiyero, the traditional healer, however, believes the reports of witchcraft are real.
“While I agree there are spiritual challenges associated with witchcraft in schools, it is mostly because male parents or the school authorities are involved in witchcraft for business and power,” he told Anadolu Agency.
Orphan Banhamombe, a Harare-based Christian pastor, for his part, insisted that what are called “witchcraft” and “Satanism” were largely one and the same.
“As Christians, we call it ‘Satanism’, meaning a practice linked to the antichrist. But it’s the same as witchcraft and the two are dealt with in the same way – namely, by exorcism,” Banhamombe told Anadolu Agency.

This will be Chamisa’s first series of rallies in the traditional Zanu PF strongholds since he took over leadership of the opposition party, following the death of founding leader, Morgan Tsvangirai last month.
On Saturday, Chamisa is set to address an MDC Alliance rally in Murewa before proceeding to Nzvimbo growth point in Chiweshe, Mashonaland Central, the following day.
The provinces used to be regarded as no-go areas for opposition politics during the era of former President Robert Mugabe. Chamisa’s spokesperson, Luke Tamborinyoka confirmed the rallies.
“We are going rural and the MDC Alliance has from now on, heavily tilted its campaign towards the rural areas,” he said.
“On Saturday, we will be in Murewa and proceed to Chiweshe. We will scour every village and every ward. We are talking of a presidential candidate (Chamisa), who grew up in Gutu and when he is in the rural areas, he will be in his domain.”
Chamisa has held several successful rallies after the death of Tsvangirai except for Plumtree, which was poorly attended, but the alliance partners attributed the low turnout to rains, although some observers blamed it to the fallout between Chamisa and MDC-T vice president, Thokozani Khupe.
The Mashonaland provinces, especially Mashonaland East’s Uzumba-Maramba Pfungwe, often report shockingly high electoral figures for Zanu PF.
This comes as police in Marondera have finally granted the MDC Alliance permission to hold its rally at Rudhaka Stadium on Saturday after they had initially blocked it, citing President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s alleged visit to the town on the same date.
The MDC Alliance, however, moved the rally to Murewa.
MDC-T Mashonaland East deputy organising secretary, Boniface Tagwirei, confirmed the development, which he said had been overtaken by events, as they had moved the rally to Murewa.
“I received a letter from the district police commander informing us that we could go ahead with the rally at Rudhaka Stadium, as per our application. It is too late now since we have settled for Murewa. We cannot change that now, they initially blocked our rally, saying Mnangagwa was coming, but they are now saying we can go ahead. We will hold the Marondera rally some other time, as for Saturday we are heading to Murewa,” he said.
