Lugano, Switzerland - Unravel Travel TV
Lugano in Switzerland lies in a bay on the northern side of Lake Lugano, surrounded by numerous mountains offering splendid viewpoints. The traffic-free historic town centre, the numerous buildings in Italianate Lombardy style, the exclusive museums, the mountains, lake and a packed calendar of events all invite visitors to see the sights, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy dolce far niente. Thanks to its mild climate, Lugano is a popular tourist destination in the spring when the camellias are in bloom.
The town centre with its Mediterranean-style squares and arcades, and numerous parks with sub-tropical plants such as the Parco Civico on the shores of the lake invite you to laze around, enjoying the atmosphere. By the lakeside promenade are the Belvedere Gardens, where the parkland boasts not only camellias and magnolias but also countless sub-tropical plants and modern works of art.
New hotels and services enhance the appeal of Lugano as a destination for organising events in a real “stronghold” of Conventions also taking advantage of the region’s whole territory to experiment with unusual locations and activities. The beauty of the landscape has always played a central role in the history of Lugano, even contributing to the choice of the position of its Congress areas, all looking out onto the lake and within walking distance from the historical city centre and the main hotels.
The brand new LAC, Lugano, Art and Culture, the splendid cultural centre costing 270 million francs that will be inaugurated in September 2015 and which will give the city an auditorium with 1,000 seats, large exhibition areas and halls for events, underground parking and a panoramic banquet hall.
Many performances of the Luganese cultural calendar will be hosted here, rendering the halls of Lugano’s Congress Hall (1,200 seats and 10 modular structured rooms) more available; the latter is another very central facility, not far from the large Exhibition Centre (2,500 places and a surface of 12,000 sq. metres), which also supports congress events.
The possibility the city has of creating a synergy among its different facilities is underscored by the biannual organization, in June, of the International Conference on Malignant Lymphomas: 3,000 professionals are welcomed during this meeting at the Congress Hall, the University of Italian Speaking Switzerland, the Corso Cinema and at the Asilo Ciani, a 4,000 sq. metre tensile structure with a maxi-screen for video conferences and scientific posters.
Last but not least is the luxury and prestige offered by Villa Ciani, one of the City’s most magnificent locations. The Villa, looking out over Ciani park and its reflection on the lake, offers many rooms with frescoed ceilings, which go to the making of any important event. This proposal enhances the already rich offer of the Congress Hall thanks to a direct, indoor connection to the Villa. All this has been accompanied by the investments made to enhance Lugano’s accommodation capacity, which today counts almost three thousand five hundred rooms, of which 500 in 5 star hotels and almost 800 in 4 star hotels. During the last two years the following hotels of the Accor group have been inaugurated: Novotel (96 rooms and three modular congress rooms with up to 135 places), Resort Collina d’Oro (46 rooms and 2 meeting rooms, the largest of which with 60 places) and Kurhaus Cademario Hotel & Spa (82 rooms and 2 modular meeting rooms with about 90 places -88); Villa Sassa Hotel Residence &Spa, on the other hand, has created a new hall seating 130 people, that represents an addition to the other 6 already existing rooms.
The Lugano MICE Convention Bureau is the right contact to discover unusual locations and activities: from the airport hangar to the ancient villa, from the historical garden to the vintage train, from cooking classes visits to vineyards and wine cellars, from balloon trips or by helicopter to regattas on the lake with sailboats or dragon boats, up to the classic evening at the Casinò.
