Site visit: DELLWOOD
Built: 1948
Architect/Builder: Housing Commission of NSW
Photo: Jerome Pearce/Archival Image: Courtesy Granville Historical Society
Building History:
The Dellwood Shopping Centre was the first planned shopping centre (with attached public housing estate) built by the Housing Commission of NSW. Reflecting the very latest in town planning, the Dellwood development was influenced by the New Towns Development in the UK. Responding to the post-World War Two housing boom the Dellwood complex featured ten shops with flats overhead. Rental preference was given to married ex-Service personnel (rental for the butcher's shop (pictured above) was the equivalent of $10 per week).
