The miracle of Myanmar, Kyaik Htee Yoe Pagoda, Mon State in 4K
Mount Kyaiktiyo (Kyite Htee Yoe), famous for the huge golden rock perched at its summit, is one of the three most sacred religious sites in Myanmar, Pilgrims come here from far and wide to worship and add gold leaf to the rock, which seems to defy gravity by delicately balancing on the edge of the 1100-metre high mountain.
The pagoda is located near Kyaikto in Mon State in the northern part of the Tenasserim coast. The Golden Rock is situated at an elevation of 1,100 metres (3,600 ft) above sea level, on top of the Kyaik Htiee Yoe hill that is also known as Eastern Yoma mountain and it is on the Paung-laung ridge of the Eastern Yoma mountain. It is at a distance of 210 kilometres (130 mi) from Yangon.
The Kinpun village 16 km (10 mi) is at the base of Mt. Kyaik Htee Yoe, which has a lively atmosphere and a good range of places to eat. If you are staying in Kinpun, it makes the most sense to arrive in the late afternoon or evening, and then ascend the mountain the following morning.
Special trucks driven by well-trained drivers can now drive you up to Mt. Yathae, from which visitors trek uphill for about 45 minutes. Porters and palanquins are available to carry luggage and pilgrims who are too old or too weak.
For many visitors, the rock (standing 7.6 metres tall) and the gilded pagoda which sits on top of it (itself 7.3 metres tall), which are said to cover a hair of the Buddha, are the main draw, but another reason to make the journey is the panoramic 360 degree views of the surrounding Mon State mountains from the summit.
You may also take Myanmar's first cable car from Yathaetaung to the summit (K6,000 for a round trip ticket). The operating hours of the bus and cable car are 5am to 6pm.
Women are not allowed into the inner sanctuary of the rocks vicinity, maintained by an employed security guard who watches over the gated entrance. Women are permitted in the outer balcony and the lower courtyard of the rock.
The Golden Rock is the main attraction for the pilgrims who offer prayers and also stick golden leaves on the rock in reverence. The main square close to the golden rock has many establishments that deal in religious paraphernalia for worship and offerings made by the pilgrims. Adjoining the plaza area is the Potemkin village where restaurants, gift shops, and guest houses are located. A new terrace has been built at a lower level from which visitors can get a good view of the rock and the pagoda.
At the peak of the pilgrimage season, from November to March, an atmosphere of devotion is witnessed at Kyaik Htiee Yoe pagoda.
The Full Moon day of Tabaung in March is a special occasion for pilgrims who visit the shrine. On this day, the platform of the pagoda is lighted with ninety thousand candles as a reverential offering to the Lord Buddha. The devotees who visit the pagoda also offer fruits, food and incense to the Buddha.

10 Must-See Attractions in Myanmar (Burma)
10 Must-See Attractions in Myanmar (Burma) according to Lonely Planet
10. Mt Kyaiktiyo (Golden Rock)
Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, also known as Golden Rock is a well-known Buddhist pilgrimage site in Mon State, Myanmar. It is a small pagoda built on the top of a granite boulder covered with gold leaves pasted on by devotees. According to legend, the Golden Rock itself is precariously perched on a strand of the Buddha's hair.
9. Kalaw
The town was popular with the British during colonial rule. Kalaw is the main setting of the novel The Art of Hearing Heartbeats by Jan-Philipp Sendker. The hill station is located at an elevation of 1320 metres, 50 km from the Inle lake. Kalaw offers a variety of opportunities for trekking.
8. Hsipaw
Attractive Hsipaw is ideally placed for quick, easy hikes into fascinating Shan and Palaung villages. The town's handful of guides offer just enough English-speaking help to make the experience comfortable, while the whole region feels far less 'discovered' than that around Kalaw.
7. Ngapali Beach
Ngapali Beach is the most famous beach in Myanmar and is a popular tourist destination. Myanmar's political climate means that Ngapali is not as well publicized as other good beaches of Southeast Asia. The beach stretches for 3 km and overlooks the Indian Ocean. The name Ngapali, has no meaning in Burmese, but comes from the Italian Napoli (the city of Naples).
6. Thingyan
Thingyan is the Burmese New Year Water Festival and usually falls around mid-April. It is a Buddhist festival celebrated over a period of four to five days culminating in the new year. Formerly the dates of the Thingyan festival are calculated according to the traditional Burmese lunisolar calendar, but now fixed to Gregorian calendar 13 to 16 April.
5. Mrauk U
Mrauk U is a medieval town and archaeological site in Rakhine State, Western Myanmar. Mrauk U may seem to be a sleepy village today but not so long ago it was the capital of a reasonable sized empire where Portuguese, Dutch and French traders rubbed shoulders with the literati of Bengal and Mughal princes on the run.
4. Pyin Oo Lwin
Once the summer capital of the British Raj in Burma, Pyin U Lwin retains some of the hill station look that cities like Darjeeling and Simla in India used to have in the 1960s and 1970s. Because of its history as a summer capital and a military centre of the Indian Army during British times, it has both a large Indian population and strong Anglo-Burmese and Anglo-Indian communities.
3. Bagan
Bagan, also spelled Pagan, on the banks of the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) River, is home to the largest and densest concentration of Buddhist temples, pagodas, stupas and ruins in the world, many dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. The shape and construction of each building is highly significant in Buddhism with each component taking on spiritual meaning.
2. Inle Lake
Inle Lake is a shallow lake in the middle of Myanmar, southeast of Mandalay. The lake is 22 km long, and is densely inhabited by many different tribes. Although the lake is not large, it contains a number of endemic species. Over twenty species of snails and nine species of fish are found nowhere else in the world.
1. Shwedagon Paya
The Shwedagon Pagoda or Paya is the single most important religious site in all of Myanmar. The pagoda lies to the west of Kandawgyi Lake, on Singuttara Hill, thus dominating the skyline of the city. It is the most sacred Buddhist pagoda for the Burmese with relics of the past four Buddhas enshrined within: the staff of Kakusandha, the water filter of Koṇāgamana, a piece of the robe of Kassapa and eight strands of hair from Gautama, the historical Buddha.

Myanmar (English pronunciation below; Burmese: [mjəmà]),[nb 1] officially the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and also known as Burma, is a country in Southeast Asia. Myanmar is bordered by India and Bangladesh to its west, Thailand and Laos to its east and China to its north and northeast. To its south, about one third of Myanmar's total perimeter of 5,876 km (3,651 mi) forms an uninterrupted coastline of 1,930 km (1,200 mi) along the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. The country's 2014 census counted the population to be 51 million people.[7] As of 2017, the population is about 54 million.[4] Myanmar is 676,578 square kilometres (261,228 square miles) in size. Its capital city is Naypyidaw, and its largest city and former capital is Yangon (Rangoon).[1] Myanmar has been a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) since 1997.
Early civilisations in Myanmar included the Tibeto-Burman-speaking Pyu city-states in Upper Burma and the Mon kingdoms in Lower Burma.[8] In the 9th century, the Bamar people entered the upper Irrawaddy valley and, following the establishment of the Pagan Kingdom in the 1050s, the Burmese language, culture and Theravada Buddhism slowly became dominant in the country. The Pagan Kingdom fell due to the Mongol invasions and several warring states emerged. In the 16th century, reunified by the Taungoo dynasty, the country was for a brief period the largest empire in the history of Mainland Southeast Asia.
A hotel is an establishment that provides paid lodging on a short-term basis. Facilities provided may range from a modest-quality mattress in a small room to large suites with bigger, higher-quality beds, a dresser, a refrigerator and other kitchen facilities, upholstered chairs, a flat screen television, and en-suite bathrooms. Small, lower-priced hotels may offer only the most basic guest services and facilities. Larger, higher-priced hotels may provide additional guest facilities such as a swimming pool, business centre (with computers, printers, and other office equipment), childcare, conference and event facilities, tennis or basketball courts, gymnasium, restaurants, day spa, and social function services. Hotel rooms are usually numbered (or named in some smaller hotels and B&Bs) to allow guests to identify their room. Some boutique, high-end hotels have custom decorated rooms. Some hotels offer meals as part of a room and board arrangement. In the United Kingdom, a hotel is required by law to serve food and drinks to all guests within certain stated hours.[citation needed] In Japan, capsule hotels provide a tiny room suitable only for sleeping and shared bathroom facilities.

GOLDEN ROCK PAGODA - MYANMAR TRAVEL TIPS
The stunning “Golden Rock” Pagoda (Kyaiktiyo Pagoda) is one of the most important Buddhist religious and pilgrimage sites in Myanmar. This sacred monument balancing on the side of mount Kyaiktiyo will not disappoint. A must-see!! Visit at sunrise or sunset. It’s awe-inspiring!
TRAVEL TIPS:
1. There is a steep 7 mile (11 km) 45-minute truck ride everyone must take up/down a winding road to the Golden Rock. The ride is a white-knuckle experience! You can also choose to walk or be carried (about 4-5 hours). If you tend to experience travel sickness, come prepared!
2. Be prepared to remove your shoes and socks before you enter the temple area. You can leave them outside the temple area or carry them with you.
3. Dress modestly. No one wearing shorts above the knees/ short skirts or revealing clothing is allowed in the temple area. If needed, buy an inexpensive longyi (a skirt-like fabric wrap for men and women) and a shawl/scarf to cover exposed shoulders.
4. Only men are allowed to cross the footbridge over the chasm separating the temple terrace from the Golden Rock.
5. Be Respectful! Myanmar’s temples and pagodas are holy sites and places of worship.
