Perched on the hill crest of Penafiel Spain rests an ancient and stately castle.
This is the aptly named Penafiel Castle, whose design, because of the shape of the hill, is similar to that of a boat.
This prominent and expansive structure was built between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries.
It was originally built by one of Spain's wealthy nobles to be the Faithful Rock of Castile.
The view from the keep and walls looks out over Penafiel and two beautiful valleys.
The interior of Penafiel Castle is accessible to visitors via guided tours.
CASTRO URDIALES | CASTILLO FARO - Fortificación única en Cantabria
| Sobre una península rocosa, en el corazón de Castro Urdiales, se asienta un castillo medieval convertido en faro que fue clave en la defensa de la ciudad a lo largo de la historia.
Asciendo por la Puebla Vieja de Castro Urdiales a la espectacular península donde desde hace más de 800 años se encuentra el castillo faro junto a la iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción. En este día soleado y caluroso, impropio del mes de enero, paseo por el interior de la fortificación y disfruto de sus espectaculares vistas. Desde aquí se ve el bello frente marítimo de la ciudad y en el horizonte el Abra de Bilbao.
Esta sólida fortificación única en Cantabria está compuesta por una bella estructura pentagonal rematada por imponentes cubos angulares. En su interior como si se tratara de una joya codiciada podemos admirar una nave principal en forma de bóveda de medio cañón que actualmente se utiliza como sala de exposiciones. Aquí se encuentra protegido un miliario romano de la calzada que discurría por la colonia romana de Flaviobriga.
Este castillo convertido en el siglo XIX en faro fue clave en la defensa de Castro Urdiales a lo largo de la historia con un capítulo dramático en la toma de la población por las tropas napoleónicas en 1813.
Fue declarado en 1978 Conjunto Histórico Artístico junto con la Puebla Vieja.
Para llegar hasta aquí nos hemos asomado al puerto de la ciudad desde donde se ve perfectamente en lo alto de la península la silueta del castillo junto con la iglesia y el puente.
Acceso preparado para personas con movilidad reducida. Abierto todos los días de 11:00 a 13:30 y de 16:30 a 18:30. En estos momentos el mirador de la parte alta de la fortificación está cerrado por obras. Más información en la web del Ayuntamiento de Castro Urdiales
