MOROCCO'S ROMAN RUINS
In this travel vlog, we visit the ancient Roman Ruins in Morocco! Volubilis is an ancient Roman City located near Meknes. This city dates back to the 3rd C BC.
Volubilis is located at the south-western border of the Roman Empire in Africa. The city gained a number of major public buildings in the 2nd century, including a basilica, temple and triumphal arch. UNESCO listed Volubilis as a World Heritage Site in 1997.
Inside the Roman City, we visit the North Baths fed by the aqueduct, the mosaic floor depicting Hercules, The Capitoline Temple, Basilica, Arch of Caracalla - many of which are still standing despite an earthquake in the 1700s. The water system is still being used today.
We end our night in Fes, where we check into our Hotel Barceló and eat a traditional Moroccan tagine dinner.

Volubilis - Morocco Historical Place - Travel & Discover
The city fell to local tribes around 285 and was never retaken by Rome because of its remoteness and indefensibility on the south-western border of the Roman Empire. It continued to be inhabited for at least another 700 years, first as a Latinised Christian community, then as an early Islamic settlement. In the late 8th century it became the seat of Idris ibn Abdallah, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty and the state of Morocco.

End of the Roman Road, Volubilis; Morocco
Morocco's most impressive and atmospheric ancient site is the roman city of Volubilis. From the Riad Fellousia in Meknes we grabbed a filling breakfast and headed out of town. The riad can arrange a special taxi to see the ruins as well as the nearby town of Moulay Idriss, home to Morocco's most venerated saint. Originally a Carthaginian trading post in the 3rd century BC, Volubilis gradually became distant Roman base in the 1st century AD and marked the farthest extent of the Imperial road. It had been continuously inhabited for over 2000 years until the Lisbon earthquake severely damaged the site and Moulay Ismail's dismantling of the city's marble to use the Imperial City in Meknes. Situated in some of the most fertile plains in North Africa, Volubilis provided Rome with a substantial supply of wheat and olives.

After two busy but inspiring days in Fez, we decided that it was time to venture into the vast prairies that surround the metropolis. In this post we tell you how to tour the ruins of Volubilis, the sacred city of Moulay Idriss and the imperial city of Meknes, all in one day from Fez and on your own.
Originally occupied by merchants of Carthage in the 3rd century, Volubilis was one of the most remote outposts of the Roman Empire. It is recorded that 20000 people lived there in their heyday.
Volubilis is an open-air museum, through which you can wander freely and travel at will. There are not many signs or information, so it is advisable to read a little before going or consider hiring some guide of the many waiting at the entrance. The place deserves at least 3 hours. Surrounded by extensive green meadows, not only the ruins are attractive but also the monumental landscape that is seen from there.

Después de dos días ajetreados pero inspiradores en Fez, decidimos que era momento de salir a explorar por la zona y que mejor que adentrarse en las vastas praderas que rodean la metropolis. En este post te contamos cómo recorrer las ruinas de Volubilis, la ciudad sagrada de Moulay Idriss y la ciudad imperial de Meknes, todo en un mismo día y desde Fez.
Originalmente ocupada por los comerciantes de Cartago en el siglo III, Volubilis fue una de las avanzadas más remotas del imperio romano. Se tiene registro que 20000 personas vivieron allí en su apogeo.
Volubilis es un museo al aire libre, a través del cual puedes vagar libremente y recorrerlo a voluntad. No hay muchas señalizaciones ni información, así que es recomendable leer un poco antes de ir o considerar contratar algún guía de los muchos que esperan en la entrada. El sitio se merece al menos 3 horas. Rodeado de extensas praderas verdes, no sólo las ruinas son el atractivo sino también el paisaje monumental que se contempla desde allí.
