Lake Rotoroa in Nelson Lakes National Park - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – BackpackerGuide.NZ
Day 98: Today we are heading off the beaten track to Lake Rotoroa in Nelson Lakes National Park. It’s the largest of the Nelson Lakes and a real hidden gem in New Zealand.

30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
Today we are going to that other lake in the Nelson Lakes National Park, Lake Rotoroa. Yesterday, we went to Lake Rotoiti but this lake is about a 20-minute drive off the main state highway so so many backpackers miss it. But today, we’re going to show you that going to Lake Rotorua is worth getting off the beaten track for.
We arrive at the beautiful Lake Rotoroa with a jetty looking out to the mountain and lake views. There are also a number of hikes at Lake Rotoroa so we check out the Lake Rotoroa Nature Walk, which is recommended to us by a couple of Kiwi locals that we meet at the lake.
The Lake Rotoroa Nature Walk is a 20-minute walk around the beautiful beech forest with birds and isolated lake beaches.
After a hike around Lake Rotoroa, Robin realises that he needs to go to the hospital as he has an inflamed finger. We find that the medial centres and health care in New Zealand is very helpful and another example of the help from locals in New Zealand.

Australia: Into The Outback
Traveling Australia: We leave Queensland's tropical coast and head southwest to Mareeba, Granite Gorge, and Chillagoe. The landscape changes dramatically within 200 km, as the drive inland takes you into the beginning of the outback. The scenery is mesmerizing with striking red earth and soft green eucalypts against a backdrop of vivid blue sky.
Kepler Track - New Zealand Great Walks - New Zealand's Information Network
This guide has been compiled by the New Zealand Information Network to introduce you to these crown jewels of our tramping track network. New Zealand's most popular tramping/trekking tracks and a river journey are collectively known as the Great Walks.
Stroll on into Te Anau, 'The Walking Capital of New Zealand', and set out on our best-planned Great Walk, which starts right on the edge of town.
The 67 km Kepler Track is the perfect complement to its near neighbours, the Milford and Routeburn tracks. It combines all the best archetypal Fiordland features such as moss-draped beech forest, rich bird life, alpine tussock, mountain ranges, cascading waterfalls, glacial valleys, river flats and limestone formations. Bookings are essential in the October-April walking season. From May the track reverts to the Backcountry Hut ticket system. Camping is only permitted at Brod Bay and near the Iris Burn Hut.
This 3 to 4 day tramp starts by hugging the southern shore of Lake Te Anau as far as the Waiau River Control Gates. From there it is an easy walk to Brod Bay before tackling the 4 hour ascent to Mt Luxmore Hut. On Day 2 there is an option to explore the limestone caves on Mt Luxmore, and climb to the summit (1,471 metres) for a 360' panorama of Lake Te Anau and the Murchison Range. The native takahe bird was found in this range in 1948 after years of presumed extinction. From Mt Luxmore the track crosses an exposed alpine ridge for 12 km before descending through beech forest to the Iris Burn Hut.
On Day 3 the track winds down an ancient glacial valley to Moturau Hut on the shores of Lake Manapouri, from where it is a 2 hour tramp to the Rainbow Reach exit. A regular shuttle service operates here in summer. Alternatively you can continue up the Waiau River to the Control Gates and back to Te Anau.
The Kepler Track is unique in its recent custom-made design as a round trip route. Other New Zealand tracks evolved from Maori trails or pioneer exploration routes.
This is the perfect place to have a hassle-free great outdoors experience at high altitude. The immensity and mountain splendour is simply breathtaking.
The Milford Road / Highway - Pure New Zealand Nature
The Milford Road is one of the most beautiful Highways of the World. Its the Way to the marvelous Milford Sound and leads trough Wilderness and alpine Scenery. The Milford Road is a unique Journey into the Heart of the Fiordland National Park. Breathtaking Views, stunning Nature, amazing Scenery. Some of the most striking and significant features of the World Heritage Area Te Wahipounamu are revealed along its Route. Mountains, Valleys, Wood, Bush, Lakes, Rivers, Ferns, Lupines, Keas and other Birds: 100% Pure New Zealand nature experience. A must do for Kiwi travellers and tourists from overseas. Its one of the top tourist attractions of the South Island.
One of the most incredible and frequently overlooked features of Milford Sound is the journey to get there. A range of short walks and photographic opportunities mean that those wishing to truly explore will find no shortage of spectacular stops to choose from. The Milford Road is a stunning alpine drive. Visitors need to allow plenty of time to stop at the numerous viewing points or short walking opportunities en route, just to get out of the car and drink in the spectacular scenery and the sheer scale of the landscape. My personal favorite locations are the Mirror Lakes, Monkey Creek and the Chasm, but there are a lot of other highlights which makes the Milford road to one of the top tourist destinations of the South Island of New Zealand.
The road is fully sealed, but the 240 kilometre return journey between Te Anau to Milford takes a minimum of two hours driving (in each direction) without allowing for stops. Motorists are advised to fill vehicles with petrol in Te Anau, although supplies are available at Gunns Camp in the Hollyford Valley and at Milford Sound. The best is to drive not too much at one day and spend at least two or more nights in Te Anau.
The following places and sites are seen in this video or are nearby: Te Anau, Te Anau Downs, Lake Te Anau, Dana Peak, Murchison Mountains, Snag Burn, Miller Peak, Mount Pisgah, Stuart Mountains, Rocky Point, Doubtful Island, Erin Island, Bute Island, Arran Island, Middle Fiord, Eglinton River, Eglinton Valley, Mount Eglinton, Turret Peaks, Flecked Peak, Mount Mc Dougall, Halfway Peak, Mirror Lakes, Earl Mountains, Knobs Flat, Largs Peak, Triangle Peak, Mistake Creek, Cascade Creek, Lake Gunn, Lake Fergus, Skelmore Peak, Mount Crosscut, Donne River, Daran Mountains, Gertrude Saddle, Hollyford River, Students Peak, The Park, Mount Charlton, Flat Top Peak, Falls Creek, Monkey Creek, Mount Suter, Mount Talbot, Mount Macpherson, Homer Tunnel, Mount Belle, Mount Gendarme, The Chasm, Access Peak, Mount Ada, Odyssey Peak, Cleddau River, Sheerdown Peak
