Hyderabad - Nagarjuna Sagar (Mysterious Island)
Started off planning with friends to visit the mysterious island off the Nagarjuna Sagar Backwaters, this place is near VizagColony in Nalgonda Dist, Telangana.
This colony was established by immigrants from Visakhapatnam who played a crucial role in the construction of Nagarjuna Sagar Dam and have settled since then.
This place is still unexplored and was a untouched area, ideal for night star gazing and to find a few meteors at times, camping is the only option for you to stay here and is ideal for nature & Trek lovers.
We were a group of around 25 people and our passion for travel is something which brought us together..
Route:
- Hyderabad - Sagar Road (Bongulur Exit on ORR) then continue on
- Sagar Road - Miryalaguda Road (take right after crossing Mallepalli towards Pendlipakula)
- Cross Pavuralagutta
- Reach VizagColony
Here you need to hire a boat to visit one of the many islands.
Vehicle: Renault Duster
Camera used: iPhone6 on a mobile holder
Total travel time: 3:50 hrs
Food options:
Breakfast / Lunch - Kaveri Hotel / Annapurna hotel, Chintapally (it's better to carry food from here as you would not get any options at VizagColony)

Exclusively for the purpose of tourism, a lake has been developed behind the dam, which boasts of its status as the third largest man-made lake anywhere in the world. The beautiful and scenic water body adds beauty to this impressive structure which offers a breathtaking experience for tourists.
The dam derives its name from a nearby hillock and island called Nagarjunakonda, where an ancient Buddhist Guru had once lived. Tourists are then taken to this famous and well-maintained museum here that houses ancient artifacts. The museum is well known for the range of articles and sculptures dating back to several centuries. Apart from the lake where regular boating facilities are provided, tourists then visit other attraction, such as Ethipothala waterfalls, close by. Ethipothala Falls is a 70-feet high cascade, situated on Chandravanka River, a tributary of the River Krishna. The waterfall is the place three streams such as Chandravanka Vagu, Nakkala Vagu and Tummala Vagu converge and is situated about 11 kilometers from Nagarjuna Sagar Dam. Here one can explore the stunning beauty of this waterfall and the impressive flow of the streams.
