Jerusalem's best-kept secret
The best-kept secret in Jerusalem
More than 10,000 species of plants can be found at the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens, a peaceful green oasis in a busy city.
Boasting the largest plant collection in Israel, the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens (botanic.co.il/en) opened to the public in 1985. Director of development Sue Surkes calls it the best kept secret in Jerusalem.
More than 10,000 species of plants from around the world are here, divided into six geographical sections. The tropical conservatory contains rainforest plants, including edibles such as pineapple and rice, and even carnivorous ones.
Among the new features are the African Savannah grass maze and the 500-meter Bible Path. What we discovered was that plants literally littered the Bible, says Surkes. Just one example is the tamarisk, planted by Abraham when he arrived in Beersheva.
Hopping aboard the flower train, as the ride is popularly called, is one of most fun ways to see the entire site, which is located on the Givat Ram campus of the Hebrew University (huji.ac.il/huji/eng).

Capernaum, the town of Jesus
Kefar Nahum is the town which was the center of Jesus’ ministry in northern Galilee and the town of where Peter’s mother-in-law lived.
Located on the north-west side of the lake of Galilee, the ruins of Capernaum are divided into two sites: the Franciscan and the Greek Orthodox.
Unlike Jerusalem and other touristy ancient places in Israel, Capernaum seems to be untouched, still in its raw form. Just by walking here, and looking at the lake, the hills, the mountains, we felt connected to its history. It is as if we could almost see Jesus walking on these shores, looking at the same hills.
And besides the breathtaking nature, Capernaum has fascinating ruins. A 4th-century synagogue built on top of the original one where Jesus taught, a house which is believed to be the house of Simon Peter the apostle, and much more.
Join us in this episode as we explore this fascinating place.

The Jerusalem Light Rail
A 21st century way to commute through an ancient city.
Running from the northern edge of Jerusalem to Mount Herzl in the south, with further extensions planned, the electrified Jerusalem Light Rail has changed the face of transportation in the ancient city.
The Light Rail runs 13.9 kilometers (8.6 miles) through the capital, stopping at most major tourist sites and connecting with bus lines. It's a great way to meet the people of Jerusalem and get a real feel for life in the city.
As one passenger notes on this video: It's good to see that they've got signs and announcements in Hebrew, English and Arabic so it's inclusive of everyone. It's really good.

Capernaum (pronounced /kəˈpɜrniəm/ kə-PUR-nee-əm; Hebrew: כְּפַר נַחוּם, Kfar Nahum, Nahum's village) was a fishing village[1] inhabited from mid 2nd century BC to 11th century AD. It is located on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Gallilee[2] and had a population of about 1,500.[3]
Recent excavations revealed that there were two synagogues in the village: the more recent was made of limestone and was built on top of the older, which was made of local black basalt. Only the foundation walls, some , and the cobblestone floor remain of the earlier structure.
A church near Capernaum is said to be the home of Saint Peter. When Jesus left Nazareth, he settled in Capernaum where he chose his first four disciples, James, John, Peter and Andrew.
The town is cited in the Gospel of Luke where it was reported to have been the home of the apostles Peter, Andrew, James and John, as well as the tax collector Matthew. In Matthew 4:13 the town was reported to have been the home of Jesus. According to Luke 4:31-44, Jesus taught in the synagogue in Capernaum on Sabbath. Jesus then healed a man who had the spirit of an unclean devil and healed a fever in Simon Peter's mother-in-law. According to Gospel of Luke /Luke 7: 1-10, it is also the place where a Roman Centurion asked Jesus to heal his servant. A building which may have been a synagogue of that period has been found beneath the remains of a later synagogue.
Capernaum is also mentioned in the Gospel of Mark (2:1), it is the location of the famous healing of the paralytic lowered through the roof to reach Jesus.
Josephus referred to Capernaum as a fertile spring. He stayed the night there after spraining his ankle. During the first Jewish revolt of 66-70 Capernaum was spared as it was never occupied by the Romans
