La Défense, Paris
A brief visit to the pedestrian plaza and transportation hub of La Défense, the trendy business suburb of Paris.
La Défense is a planned community in which cars, trains, and buses have been banished to underground tunnels and terminals, leaving the open street level to pedestrians. The area got off to a slow start decades ago, but has grown in prestige and popularity and is now one of the most expensive business districts in Europe. It's a nice place to work, especially at lunchtime, when everyone comes out onto the plaza! At night, though, it's deserted.
This video shows the plaza and some of its best known buildings, including the CNIT, Grande Arche, etc. It also takes a look at the vast underground transportation complex beneath the plaza (7:30).

Places to see in ( Paris - France ) La Defense
La Défense is a major business district just west of the city limits of Paris. It is part of the Paris Metropolitan Area in the Île-de-France region, located in the department Hauts-de-Seine spread across the commune of Courbevoie, as well as parts of Puteaux and Nanterre.
La Défense is Europe's largest purpose-built business district with 560 hectares (1,400 acres) of area, 72 glass and steel buildings (of which 19 are completed skyscrapers), 180,000 daily workers, and 3,500,000 square metres (38,000,000 sq ft) of office space. Around its Grande Arche and esplanade (le Parvis), La Défense contains many of the Paris urban area's tallest high-rises.
The district is located at the westernmost extremity of the 10-kilometre-long (6.2 mi) Historical Axis of Paris, which starts at the Louvre in Central Paris and continues along the Champs-Élysées, well beyond the Arc de Triomphe along the Avenue de la Grande Armée before culminating at La Défense. The district is centred in an orbital motorway straddling the Hauts-de-Seine département municipalities of Courbevoie, Nanterre, and Puteaux. La Défense is primarily a business district and hosts a population of 25,000 permanent residents and 45,000 students. La Défense is also visited by 8,000,000 tourists each year and houses an open-air museum.
La Défense is named after the statue La Défense de Paris by Louis-Ernest Barrias, which was erected in 1883 to commemorate the soldiers who had defended Paris during the Franco-Prussian War.
In September 1958, The Public Establishment for Installation of La Défense (fr) (EPAD) buildings (of which the Esso Tower was the very first) were built and began to slowly replace the city's factories, shanties, and even a few farms.
It launched high-profile international competitions and/or construction greenlight of several key 300-to-320-metre (980 to 1,050 ft) tall sustainable development-style skyscrapers such as Tour Signal, Tour Phare, Hermitage Plaza, and Tour Generali. During said December 2005 Press Conference, EPAD released to the public an elaborate 3D animation film titled La Défense 2015.

La Défense - Paris, France, Ultra-modern business park outside of city
La Défense is simply amazing & continues to grow at a very rapid rate. After the old world charm of Paris, this high-rise building park/office complex is almost like a futuristic oasis outside of the city limits. It is Europe's largest purpose-built business district. The centerpiece is the giant La Grande Arche de la Défense.
Surprising & yet wonderful at the same time. I generally don't like certain modern cities such as Dubai (find them ostentatious and cold for the most part; have no desire to visit those). But, La Défense had a warmth & charm to it that really grabbed me. Wide open with plenty of sunshine able to penetrate everywhere (unlike many modern ciites where sun can't hit because the buildings are too high & cramped too closely together)
Highly recommend a visit to this charmer, much to see and do. We hope to return again in a few years to see what else has been added, as we saw much construction work taking place, with layout plans showing even more expansion planned. From there, with a zoom lens, you can see the Arch of Triumph, as well as the Eiffel Tower as we show in the video.

As is usual with our videos, I'm the one who edits, etc. and puts it all together, along with any still photos seen. Ed, does the majority of the camcorder video filming, along with any narrations heard. Many subscribers tell me they enjoy the still photos section because it allows a closer and more detailed look at certain images.
