Sylt is a German island in the Frisian archipelago in the North Sea. It’s known for its long beaches, resorts and the Wadden Sea mudflats on the eastern side. The 1700s Old Frisian House has a thatched roof and exhibits about pre-20th-century island life. Denghoog is a neolithic passage grave filled with giant stone boulders. To the north, Naturgewalten is an interactive ecological museum with multimedia displays.

It is frequently covered by the media in connection with its exposed situation in the North Sea and its ongoing loss of land during storm tides. Since 1927, Sylt has been connected to the mainland by the Hindenburgdamm causeway. In latter years, it has been a resort for the German jet set and tourists in search of occasional celebrity sighting.
Sylt is connected to the German mainland by the Hindenburgdamm, a causeway with a railway line on top. The passenger trains connect Westerland (Sylt) to Niebüll or Klanxbüll, and the Deutsche Bahn's Syltshuttle allows the transfer of cars and trucks between Westerland and Niebüll. There are also ferry services to the nearby Danish island of Rømø. Sylt Airport at Westerland serves the region. Sylt is a part of the Frisian Islands. It has its own local dialect, Söl'ring, which is the indigenous speech of Sylt. Söl'ring is a dialect of insular North Frisian, with elements of Danish, Dutch and English. Today, only a small fraction of the population still speak Söl'ring. A law to promote the language (Friesisch-Gesetz) was passed in 2004.
The northernmost part of the island, Listland, was traditionally Danish-speaking. As in many areas in Schleswig-Holstein on New Year's Eve, groups of children go masked from house to house, reciting poems. This is known as Rummelpottlaufen, and as a reward, children receive sweets and/or money. Sylt also features many Frisian-style houses with thatched roofs. The vowel sound in the name of the island is represented in standard written German as y for unknown reasons, whereas the expected spelling of the name would be Sült.

Sylt is an island in northern Germany, part of Nordfriesland district, Schleswig-Holstein, and well known for the distinctive shape of its shoreline.
It belongs to the North Frisian Islands and is the largest island in North Frisia.
The northernmost island of Germany, it is known for its tourist resorts, notably Westerland, Kampen and Wenningstedt-Braderup, as well as for its 40-kilometre-long sandy beach.
Since 1927, Sylt has been connected to the mainland by the Hindenburgdamm causeway.
Until the mid 19th century Sylt was an island almost completely devoid of trees, only artificial plantations created small areas of forest and bush.
Also the now widespread rose Rosa rugosa, known as the Sylt rose on the island was only imported to Sylt.
The undemanding rose met ideal conditions on Sylt and spread so quickly that it is now a common sight on the island.
About 2,500 animal species and 150 species of plants have so far been recorded. 45% of those plants are on the IUCN Red List.
Especially notable are the 600 species of butterflies that live in the heaths, small tortoiseshell, brimstone, painted lady and peacock butterfly among them.
With several thousand individuals in the dune belt of Sylt, the natterjack toad, endangered in Germany, has one of Germany's largest populations here.
The many water birds and other coastal avians, that have their hatching grounds on Sylt or use the island for resting on their migrations constitute an ornithological feature.
Birds that hatch on Sylt include black-headed gull, Arctic tern, pied avocet, common redshank, common gull, oystercatcher, northern lapwing, common shelduck and tufted duck.
During the migration, Sylt is a resting spot for thousands of brent geese and shelducks, Eurasian wigeons and common eiders, as well as bar-tailed godwits, red knots, dunlins and Eurasian golden plovers.
Primarily European hare, rabbit and roe deer can be found and are also hunted as game on the island.
When the island was connected to the mainland by the causeway fox and badger also became common.
West of Sylt a breeding area of harbour porpoises is located.
In addition, great numbers of harbour seals and grey seals, the latter being rather uncommon in German seas, can be found on sand banks off Sylt.

We're back on Assignment!! This time in the North Sea off the coast of Germany on the Island of Norderney.
About a month ago the Marketing Team for the Island contacted us regarding an opportunity to help them make a video for a special competition. 5. Cologne Cathedral: Easily the greatest Gothic cathedral in Germany, Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) has been Cologne’s most famous landmark for centuries. Construction of the Cologne Cathedral began in 1248 and took, with interruptions, more than 600 years to complete. It is dedicated to the saints Peter and Mary and is the seat of the Catholic Archbishop of Cologne.
4. Holstentor in Lübeck: The Holstentor is one of the two remaining city gates of the city of Lübeck. Built in 1464, the gate now serves as a museum. Because of its two captivating round towers and arched entrance it is regarded as a symbol of Lübeck. The Wadden Sea is an intertidal zone in the southeastern part of the North Sea.
It lies between the coast of northwestern continental Europe and the range of Frisian Islands, forming a shallow body of water with tidal flats and wetlands.
It is rich in biological diversity.
In 2009, the Dutch and German parts of the Wadden Sea were inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List and the Danish part was added in June 2014.
The Wadden Sea is one of the world's seas whose coastline has been most modified by humans, via systems of dikes and causeways on the mainland and low-lying coastal islands.
The Wadden Sea stretches from Den Helder, in the northwest of the Netherlands, past the great river estuaries of Germany to its northern boundary at Skallingen north of Esbjerg in Denmark along a total length of some 500 km and a total area of about 10,000 square kilometres.
Within the Netherlands it is bounded from the IJsselmeer by the Afsluitdijk.
The area is typified by extensive tidal mud flats, deeper tidal trenches (tidal creeks) and the islands that are contained within this, a region continually contested by land and sea.
The islands are marked by dunes and wide, sandy beaches towards the North Sea and a low, tidal coast towards the Wadden Sea.
The Wadden Sea is famous for its rich flora and fauna, especially birds.
Hundreds of thousands of waders (shorebirds), ducks, and geese use the area as a migration stopover or wintering site, and it is also a rich habitat for gulls and terns.
According to J. B. MacKinnon, larger fish including sturgeons, rays, Atlantic salmon, brown trout, and others like lacuna snails and oyster beds that were once found elsewhere in the region have disappeared as well.
Wadden Sea is an important habitat for two species of seals, harbor and grey seals.
North Atlantic right whales and gray whales were once seen in the region, using the shallow, calm waters for either feeding and breeding before they were completely wiped out by shore-based whaling.
These two species are now thought to be either extinct or remnant populations of which low-tens at best survive.
Recent increases in number of North Atlantic humpback whales and minke whales might have resulted in more visits and possible re-colonization by the species to the areas especially around Marsdiep.

Schokland and Surroundings - UNESCO World Heritage Site
A tour of the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage site of the Schokland area in Friesland, north-eastern Netherlands. This was once a peninsula jutting out into the Zuider Sea, which was eventually eroded into an island and evacuated. After the Zuider Sea was drained, it became a typical Dutch farming area, complete with a lighthouse several kilometres from the coast! Fascinating area, though a little imagination is required!
