Arenal National Park
On the map, the Arenal National Park is located in the lower central part of our northern plains. The 7,413 acres (3,000 hector) Arenal National Park is settled within the 501,623 acres (203,000 hector) Arenal Conservation Area, which is protecting 8 of Costa Rica's 12 life zones and 16 reserves in the region between the Guanacaste and Tilarán mountain ranges. The park contains two volcanoes, the very active Arenal Volcano and the very dormant Cerro Chato, and is located near the 25 mile long Lake Arenal. The lake was extended to 3 times its original size in 1979 to house Costa Ricas largest hydroelectric dam that produces 70% of the countrys electricity. The lake is very famous among local fishermen and travelers, because its waters are loaded with rainbow bass. This fish is known by the locals as Guapote (handsome one). It is not only beautiful, but very flavorful as well. Lake Arenal is also one of the world's top destinations for travelers to enjoy windsurfing and sail boarding, due to its year-round steady and strong winds. There is a small but bustling windsurfing community, containing schools for amateur travelers, at the northwest end of the lake. Although, the winds are year around, the prime time of year for the serious windsurfers to visit is during the windy season which is from November to April. Costa Rica's Arenal National Park gets its name from the Arenal Volcano, one of the world's ten most active volcanoes, and the most active volcano in Costa Rica. Arenal Volcano has been spewing lava regularly since breaking its 400-year dormancy from a fateful earthquake on July 29, 1968. As a result of the colossal blast, that was felt as far away as Boulder, Colorado, two of the local villages (Tabacón and Pueblo Nuevo) were wiped out, along with their entire populations. Arenal Volcano is a near picture-perfect cone shape, and a must-see for anyone visiting Costa Rica. In fact, it is one of Costa Ricas biggest tourist attractions. The picturesque Arenal Volcano is the major highlight of this new national park that opened its doors in September of 1991. Lava discharge and eruptions have been regular, and on virtually any day tourist can see smoky columns of ash and blocks of rocks from eruptions, known as strombolian activity, descending down the elevated slope (provided it isnt clouded over). Some days the volcano blows numerous times in an hour, ejecting car-size rocks, chloride gases, sulfur dioxide, ash, and red-hot lava. Located on the western side of the volcano is its active vent, and with the normal easterly wind, it blows most of the effects westward. Eruptions and explosions, however, happen on all sides of the volcano. On nights where Arenal Volcano is not surrounded by clouds, vacationers can enjoy fiery firework displays of lava and red illuminated boulders. Along with the lake, the Arenal National Park is surrounded by a plethora of hot springs heated by the peak of the volcano. The weather can be erratic with clouds covering the volcano at a moment's notice, hiding any view travelers could have had. This is truer during the wet season. Visitors stand a reasonable chance in the dry season, although, clear nights are still possible at this time. Morning hours seem to be a better time to witness the top before the afternoon clouds arrive. Travelers should know that viewing Volcan Arenal is never a sure thing and in all actuality, the worse time for viewing Volcan Arenal is during December and January. We know, we live here. The Arenal National Park will get travelers the closest (legal) viewing of Volcan Arenal, and trust me, it's close enough.

Lake Arenal, Costa Rica - Adventure Guru
Lake Arenal is enormous and stunning. This video captures the views from the quaint little town Nuevo Arenal (45 min drive from La Fortuna and the hot springs). There are views of the volcano from other areas of the lake closer to La Fortuna (weather permitting). About 20 minutes west of La Fortuna you'll see kayaks available for rent alongside the lake.
ADA: The lake access pictured here is through an unnamed park that has hard pack ground that is a bit lumpy but otherwise can be wheeled through. There are grades 5-10% by best guess and they get much steeper if you want to make your way down to the water.

La Fortuna Costa Rica
Hey everyone, DAngelo and michael alan from the Costa Rica Travel Channel. We live in La fortuna, right next to the Arenal Volcano. I can't think of two better guys to show you around. So check it out and see why we live here. The canopy tours, rafting, rappelling, hiking Cerro Chata and Fortuna Falls, biking, flora and fauna have nothing to do with it...hehe. If you're ever in the area, by all mean, stop in and bring the Cacique.
Lying at the eastern foot of the spectacular, Volcan Areanl, is the charming little tourist town (about 7,500) of La Fortuna. Recently this town has become quite the destination for volcano watchers from around the world. La Fortuna is the entry point to the road that connects the Arenal Volcano area to Lake Arenal and continuing on into Guanacaste. The magnificent Arenal Volcano is basically what put the little former farming town of La Fortuna on any visitors to Costa Ricas map, and prior to 1968, it was solely a agricultural town. Now it is one the premier tourist destinations in Costa Rica.
The history of La Fortuna and the Arenal Volcano have been connected since Volcan Arenal reared it massive head and awoke after a 400 year slumber and violently erupted in 1968 with the largest eruption in its recent history. It had been dormant so long it was thought by the locals to be a mere mountain. Actually, Arenal is an almost perfect cone, soaring 1,633 meters above sea level and has a crater 140 meters deep formed over an ancient caldera. The volcano dates back to about 3 million years ago. Arenal spewed ash, rocks and gas for 3 consecutive days and when the smoke finally cleared the villages of Tabacon, Pueblo Nuevo and San Luis were no more. From this catastrophic tragedy, La Fortuna (meaning the Fortune), was born as the town center and village for the Arenal Volcano area and like moths to a flame, tourists from around the world started descending on La Fortuna in search of fiery night skies.
La Fortuna has grown leaps and bounds in recent years all due to the lucrative tourism industry. Farmers sold their land and cabinas popped up out of nowhere and even without an active volcano spewing smoke, ash and lava overhead, La Fortuna would still be a great place to relax and kick back for a few days. Today, La Fortuna offers everything for the Costa Rica traveler and despite the influx of tourists the town still retains that cool vibe and real Tico fee. Accommodations from the 5 star Tabacon to a $10. per night hostel; and of course everything in between. There is easy access to rejuvenating hot springs, horseback riding to waterfall, white-water rafting, waterfall rappelling, hiking, volcano tours, canopy tours, bungee jumping, cave explorations, butterfly gardens and eco-tours, the list goes on and on. Its no wonder La Fortuna has become one of the top tourist destinations in Costa Rica.

Arenal, Costa Rica; Must See! Nayara Springs Resort

Altamira, offers open air dining. Offering a fabulous buffet breakfast, complimentary for all guests and Asia Luna offering both Asian and Peruvian food. Both tables and chairs are hand painted by a local tribe, it’s amazing.
A piano lounge and bar and what better way to start your day than stopping at the Expresso bar for some of the best Costa Rican coffee you have ever had!
