Crypt of St. Thomas Apostle (Ortona, Italy)
ST. THOMAS, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ, is informally called doubting Thomas because he doubted Jesus' resurrection when first told, followed later by his confession of faith, My Lord and my God, on seeing Jesus' wounded body.
He has travelled outside the Roman Empire to preach the Gospel, travelling as far as Kerala and Tamil Nadu in India. The Apostle reached Muziris, (Kodungalloor Thrissur, Kerala, India) in AD 52 and baptized several people and founded many communities (they are known as St. Thomas Christians).He has martyred at Mylapur (India) at AD 72. After his death, the reputed relics of Saint Thomas the Apostle were enshrined as far as Mesopotamia in the 3rd century, and later moved to various places.In 1258, some of the relics were brought to Abruzzo in Ortona, Italy, where they have been held in the Church of Saint Thomas the Apostle. He is the Patron Saint of India and the name 'Thoma' remains quite popular among St. Thomas Christians of India (among Syro Malabar and Syro Malakara Christians).
Presently, the relics of St. Thomas the Apostle are kept in Ortona in the crypt of the basilica of San Tommaso Apostolo. They were stolen from Chios in the Aegean, by the ship owner Leone Acciaiuoli and brought to Ortona on September 6, 1258 with the Armenian-Mesopotamian tombstone of the saint.
