Strathaven is a historic market town in South Lanarkshire, Scotland and is the largest settlement in Avondale. The town was granted a Royal Charter in 1450, making the Town of Strathaven a burgh of barony. The current estimated population is 7,500.
The town is located on the edge of the valley of the Avon Water, around 6 miles from Hamilton, and 18.2 miles from Glasgow. The A71, which connects Edinburgh and Kilmarnock passes through the town. In the 2001 census the town had a population of 7,700. Strathaven has one secondary school and three primary schools - Kirklandpark Primary, Wester Overton Primary, and St Patrick's Primary. It also has a grass airfield about two miles to the north west, on Lethame Road.
Strathaven has a long history as a market town. A Roman road passes close by, on the south side of the Avon Water, which led to the Roman fort at Loudoun Hill near Darvel. The origins of Strathaven Castle are obscure, but it is believed to have been built around 1350 by the Bairds, on a bend of the Powmillon Burn. Today it is a ruin, with a single tower and sections of wall remaining beside the A71.
The Barony of Strathaven was acquired in 1362 by Archibald the Grim, Lord of Galloway, by his marriage to Joanna, daughter to Maurice de Moravia, 1st Earl of Strathearn, great Moray heiress. The settlement within the lands of Strathaven became a Burgh of barony in 1450. It still retains its traditional character despite the growth of more modern housing. The centre of the town is occupied by the market square, formerly a grassed common, and still known as Common Green, or just 'The Green'. Linking the town and the castle is the old 'Boo Backit Brig' ('bow-backed bridge'), a small arched bridge. The Old Parish Church, with its landmark spire, was built in 1772, and was the place of worship of the Duke of Hamilton who maintained a shooting lodge at nearby Dungavel House.
The town prospered in the 18th and 19th centuries as a weaving town, although there were many merchants living here too.[citation needed] The town played a significant part in the Radical War of 1820, when James Wilson led a band of radicals on a march to Glasgow, to join a rumoured general uprising, which never actually happened. Wilson was hanged for treason, and in 1846 a memorial was built in his honour in the town cemetery. The history of Strathaven was documented in the John Hastie Museum, but this was closed in 2011 and sold to a private individual.
Its most famous 'modern' resident was Sir Harry Lauder (1870–1950) whose mansion, Lauder Ha', or Hall, was just above the town on the road to Kilmarnock. Sir Harry spent the Second World War years there, and died in February 1950. The family retained the property until Death Duties of 65% forced a sale in the late 1960s. It remains a private residence. Dungavel House on the outskirts of Strathaven was the location where German Deputy Führer Rudolf Hess originally intended to land on the evening of 10 May 1941 in a misguided attempt to seek peace talks with the Duke of Hamilton. However bad weather and poor navigation resulted in Hess having to land at Floors Farm in Eaglesham.
Despite competition from the nearby large towns of East Kilbride and Hamilton, Strathaven still has a number of craft and gift shops, alongside well known town centre names. There are a number of businesses providing extra attraction to the town on its periphery such as Brian Young's Garden and Lawn Mower Centre on Newton Road and the Strathaven Hotel and new Rural Centre, both on the Hamilton Road. The town has long been Sunday Run territory with several town centre eating establishments as well as four public houses.

Kirkcaldy is a town and former royal burgh in Fife, on the east coast of Scotland. Kirkcaldy is about 11.6 miles north of Edinburgh and 27.6 miles south-southwest of Dundee. The area around Kirkcaldy has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. The first document to refer to the town is from 1075, when Malcolm III granted the settlement to the church of Dunfermline.
Kirkcaldy has long been nicknamed the Lang Toun in reference to the early town's 0.9-mile (1.4 km) main street, as indicated on maps from the 16th and 17th centuries. The street later reached a length of nearly 4 miles (6.4 km), connecting the burgh to the neighbouring settlements of Linktown, Pathhead, Sinclairtown and Gallatown, which became part of the town in 1876. The formerly separate burgh of Dysart was merged into Kirkcaldy in 1930.
Kirkcaldy was a world producer until well into the mid-1960s. The town expanded considerably in the 1950s and 1960s, though the decline of the linoleum industry and other manufacturing restricted its growth thereafter. The town of Kirkcaldy is a major service centre for the central Fife area. It has a swimming pool, theatre, museum and art gallery, three public parks and an ice rink. Kirkcaldy is also known as the birthplace of social philosopher and economist Adam Smith.
Kirkcaldy curves around a sandy cove between the Tiel (West) Burn to the south and the East Burn to the north, on a bay facing southeast onto the Firth of Forth. Historians are not sure where the medieval centre of Kirkcaldy was located, but it may have been at the corner of Kirk Wynd and the High Street.
Kirkcaldy Galleries is home to the town's museum and art gallery and central library. The building opened in 1925 under its former name of Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery and was extended to provide a main library in 1928. The oldest church in Kirkcaldy is the Old Kirk, the old parish church, on Kirk Wynd.
Kirkcaldy Town House on Wemyssfield is the centrepiece of the town's civic square. Kirkcaldy War Memorial in War Memorial Gardens unveiled in 1923 was gifted to the town by John Nairn, linoleum manufacturer and grandson of Michael Nairn. In the north-east are two homes of early wealthy merchants and shipowners connected with Kirkcaldy's harbour.
Two large stately homes also exist within the town. To the north of Kirkcaldy is Dunnikier House, built in the late eighteenth century as a seat for the Oswald family, replacing their previous residence at Path House. To the east of the town are the ruins of Ravenscraig Castle on a rocky spit of land extending into the Firth of Forth.
The A92, which connects Dunfermline to the west with Glenrothes and Dundee to the north, passes immediately north of Kirkcaldy. The Kirkcaldy railway station is to the north-west of the town centre and is on the route for the Fife Circle Line and the East Coast Main Line.

World Marbles Championships 2019
German side ‘1st MC Erzgebirge’ won this year’s World Marbles Championship on Good Friday (19th April) in West Sussex, beating former champions Black Dog Boozers by 39 – 0 in the one sided final.
The car park of the ‘The Greyhound’ public house may not be the most salubrious of locations but, according to folklore, this site has been used since 1588.
It is claimed that marbles has been played at Tinsley Green in West Sussex for hundreds of years, although the current World championship games hark back to its revival in the early 1930’s.
The ring is a concrete circle, six feet in diameter and covered in sand. Forty -nine marbles are compressed into a circular pack at the middle of the ring.
To decide who starts the game, each captain of the team has a “nose drop.” Here a marble is held on the tip of their nose and dropped onto the playing surface, the marble closest to the edge of the ring without going outside the ring plays first.
Players are each armed with a tolley marble – This is their playing marble and is slightly bigger than the 49 other marbles in the game. A point is scored for each marble their “shooter” knocks out of the ring. A player's knuckle must be touching the ground when shooting, this is known as knuckling down in marble jargon.
The first team to reach 25 points wins.
