The World's Most Addictive Drug? (Betel Nut)
Stay updated with my travels on Instagram! @drewbinsky
Are you ready to get your mind blown?
Let me introduce you to a legal, yet highly addictive, drug called BETEL NUT. I've seen it being widely consumed all around the Southern parts of Asia and the Pacific islands (where it naturally grows)... but here in Papua New Guinea, they take betel nut to another level. And they chew it differently than anyone else (with a mustard seed + lime + dried seashells).
More than half the population of PNG chew betel nut daily, or buai as they call it in the local language. Over the last 3 days as I've been around the country, I've seen everyone from little kids (under 10) to grandparents in their 90s spitting this red stuff out of their mouths. Betel nut is an unstoppable epidemic.
This video will educate you a little bit about betel nut -- what it is, how it's used, what it does to your health, how the epidemic is effecting the local economy, and if you watch until the end, you'll see my reactions as I try it for the first time.
Have you ever tried betel nut before? Or seen people chewing it? What are your thoughts on the drug?

The World's 2 Most Addictive Drugs?
To travel is to learn about other cultures and observe how people live their lives. And when I go abroad, I like to venture deep off the beaten path to find interesting stories to tell.
Nothing piques my interest more than drugs -- where they are found and how they are used around the world. Alcohol, nicotine and marijuana are consumed literally everywhere (even in countries where it's banned). But if you think those drugs are abused, just wait until you learn about KHAT (found in the Horn of Africa/Arabian peninsula) and BETEL NUT (found in Southeast Asia/ Pacific Islands).
I discovered both of these heavily addicting drugs in Somaliland and Papua New Guinea, respectively, earlier this year. This video shares the story of how they are affecting the local population and how they contribute to a massive part of each country's economy.
Have you ever heard of these two drugs before? What are your thoughts on them?

P.S. -- Just FYI, I tried both khat and betel nut once simply because I was curious to find out how it makes you feel. I hardly ever drink these days and I do not smoke.

KARACHI, PAKISTAN
Kat-a-kat or tak-a-tak (it still remains a debate what the sound is) is one of the greatest of all Pakistani street food dishes, and when you’re in Karachi, it’s a must eat.
Noorani Kabab House - We decided to go to Noorani Kabab House, the restaurant that if you mention katakat to any Karachiite, it will come to mind - they are the ultimate in preparing katakat or tak a tak, and as soon as you arrive, you’ll know why.
The entire intersection is filled with a cloud of smoke from the 7 or 8 giant hot plates all going at once, from the clanking and the steam and smoke pouring from the restaurant you literally feel like you’re standing in the middle of a volcano.
One of my favorite parts of this experiences was getting to choose our own goat organs - a couple of testicles, some kidneys, and some brains - that will do. They get started on your order, chopping everything up and mixing it with spices and sauces on the hot plate all while chopping and mixing and the same time. It truly is a spectacular food to watch being prepared and the chefs are such experts and masters at what they do.
Katakat or tak-a-tak is no doubt one of the most intense, amazing, and delicious Pakistani street foods to eat in Karachi and I will be back to Noorani Kabab House everytime I’m in Karachi.
Big thank you for my friend Ali ( for making this happen!

Land in Bagan and immediately feel how different Myanmar is to the rest of the world. Sublime sandstone monuments rise amidst the trees; their extravagance stretches for miles across the dusty plains. Golden stupas reflect in the Irrawaddy River; 900-year-old murals hide beside giant Buddha images, and the landscape is quick to overwhelm your senses. There are over 2,000 temples and pagodas, relics from one of the world's biggest building booms. Myanmar's iconic destination, Bagan presents a mythical world where every angle baffles the eye. Be greeted at the airport and transferred to a luxury hotel in Old Bagan in easy walking distance of the area’s largest temples.
Day 2: Bagan – Cultural Immersion for the Whole Family
Bagan's landscape is lost in a time warp, nothing modern interrupts the mystique, yet it's not merely the architecture that comes from a distant period. Village life remains much as it always has been and offers an easy cultural immersion into a unique lifestyle. Today, take an inspiring journey into Myanmar's traditions as seen through the eyes of its children. A specialist guide takes you along the river to a novice monastery.
Day 3: Bagan – Hot Air Balloon Rides and a Horse and Carriage

Day 5: Inle Lake – Spiritual Ceremonies and Adventure Along the Lake
Mystical chants radiate from a temple hidden in the hills as a monk beckons you forward into a room of wafting incense and absorbent smells. Kneel as a family to take part in a special ceremonial blessing for good health. This isn't a ceremony for tourists; many local families come here to receive the same blessing. Later, wind down through the hills and the rice paddies back to the lakeshore and another afternoon on a cruise through the villages.
Day 6: Inle Lake – Exploring the Hill Tribes of Myanmar
Various hill tribes inhabit the hills; their bamboo-dominated houses stand amongst the iconic rice steppes. This morning, visit the Palaung and immerse yourself in their traditions. Youngsters ride on the back of buffalo, ox carts wait patiently, families congregate to share tea, and children do what they do best – enjoy being children. Visiting the hill tribe villages offers a chance to interact with local life.
Day 7: Ngapali – Gazing Out at the Bay of Bengal
Ngapali is undeniably Myanmar's finest beach, a roving stretch of white sand that sweeps into the Bay of Bengal. Thick palm tree plantations lean across the beach and cast daily shadows that eventually elongate into the sapphire waters. Waves are small, the current calm, the ocean behaves as if it’s lounging in a bay. Along Ngapali, there's always space. There are no villages, just a

i almost died today. Twice
The past few days in N'Djamena, Chad have been the worst days of my entire life and I've had a miserable time here. Never in my life have I been more scared, threatened or attacked (both verbally and physically) than in this hot, dusty, beaten-down deserted city. I was in a disastrous police chase on a motorbike and I also was attacked by a dozen people for taking 1 photo inside a mini bus. I apologize for the lack of posting lately - I've had no access to wifi until now and I'm still shaken up by what has happened to me.
If it wasn't for my 6'6'' local friend (AKA Bodyguard), then I'm not sure I'd be alive right now. This is not a joke, this is serious.
The lesson learned has been learned on my end to always ask before taking a photo of anyone, but it was uncalled for these people to attack me like they did. I will end this post by saying that I do not hate Chad (as a whole) and I realize that unlucky situations can make or break your experience in any country. But it's safe to say that I will not be coming back to Chad anytime soon.
