Afghanistan Travel Guide - Charming Natural Beauty
Afghanistan Travel Guide - Charming Natural Beauty
Afghanistan is a landlocked country between Near East and Indoasia and is at the heart of Asia, traditionally part of the Greater Middle East region, it is bordered by Pakistan to the south and east, Iran to the west, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan to the north. There is a short border with China to the far northeast, but in extremely inaccessible terrain.
Afghanistan has been the centre of many powerful empires for the past 2,000 years. However, in the last 30 years the country has been in chaos due to major wars -- from the Soviet invasion of 1979 to their withdrawal in 1989 and from warlordism to the removal of the Taliban in 2001 and the ensuing American and NATO invasion. Economically, Afghanistan is considered poor compared to many other nations of the world. The country is currently going through a nation-wide rebuilding process.
Temperatures in the central highlands are below freezing for most of the winter, and snow is common at higher elevations. Summertime highs in lower elevations (such as Jalalabad or Mazar-e Sharif) can exceed 50°C/120°F. In higher areas such as Kabul, summer temperatures can be 30°C/90°F and winter around 0°C/30°F. The most pleasant weather in Kabul is during April, May and September.
Mostly rugged mountains; plains in north and southwest. The Hindu Kush mountains run northeast to southwest, dividing the northern provinces from the rest of the country, with the highest peaks found in the northern Wakhan Corridor. South of Kandahar is desert. Kandahar is beautiful in many places.
Cities & destinations of Afghanistan :

Herat - in the west, gateway to Iran, has a strong Persian influence and several interesting historical sites
Jalalabad - in the east, between Kabul and the Khyber Pass

Panjshir Valley - a beautiful trekking area, leading to the famous Anjuman Pass.
The Salang Pass is a high mountain pass and tunnel linking Kabul to the north.

Pluses:
Enjoyed the Asian restaurant wild Rice. The waiter was really lovely and attentive and made me as a solo female traveller feel comfortable.
An incredible oasis of luxury and calm in Kabul. Security seems now much more serious than in the past.
Minuses:
The security is a bit tedious with repetitive searching from one spot to another only a 1 minute walk away is a bit pointless.
too much security, they frisk you all over every time you enter the property, the security staff is too harsh.

Catching cranes -- a hobby and livelihood for Afghan hunter
As the early morning light breaks over the plain north of Kabul, bird hunter Jan Agha sets up his snares as he done for the past 30 years, hoping to catch a crane, using a tethered bird amid a flock of decoys to lure others down to the nets.
Bird hunting is an ancient sport in Afghanistan, where local and migrating species have flocked for thousands of years and where even amid the chaos of the past 40 years of conflict, the tradition persists.
I have learned the different ways of hunting from my ancestors because they were hunters too. Also, some of my sons have learned hunting from me and I hope to see that at least two of my sons will become hunters in the future so my name and fame can be remembered and that people will know my sons after my death, said the 49-year-old farmer in Parwan province.
Spring is the season of cranes, which the hunters try to catch alive in snares, using a specially trained tethered bird whose cries attract passing flocks. Hunters set off at night, picnicking in the desert before testing their skills at dawn.
After the day's catch has been secured, the tethered cranes are fed and it's time for Jan Agha to have his breakfast before heading home to his farm which is struggling with an ongoing drought.
We're happy when we catch a bird alive in the snare and we can see that they are making a sound and moving. It's sad to see their bodies when they're hit with a shotgun bullet. We say to ourselves, its a pity we've killed them, says Jan Agha, a father of seven sons and one daughter.
Jan Agha was born in the Bagram district but fled to Pakistan with his family during the Taliban area. When the family returned after the fall, they found little left and have slowly rebuilt their homes and lives and kept their hunting tradition alive.
With environmental controls virtually non-existent, there is little check on how many birds are caught or shot and Jan Agha, who started hunting when he was around 12 or 13, reckons he has taken more than 1,000 cranes and an uncountable number of quails, ducks hawks and sparrows.
The pleasure of hunting is to be a success in it. A hunter's hope is hunting. Being a success in every job in the world has a special pleasure, he says.
Jan Agha currently has around 100 cranes in his home. They and other birds are usually taken to shops near the town of Bagram or to Kabul itself, where there is a popular bird market in the centre of the old city.
The war has left much of the environment near Kabul devastated with uncleared mines, pollution, uncontrolled building and general neglect. Only in the last few years has there been an effort to restore areas like the former royal hunting grounds at Kol-e-Hashmat Khan in the city's southwest.
