The entrance to the caverns used by modern visitors is located in a bluff along the Swatara Creek. A second entrance was sealed for security purposes when the caverns were commercialized in the late 1920s. The known portions of the caverns, most of which have been commercialized, represent the intersection of two passages: the eastern cavern and the northern cavern, which meet at right angles to form a large space known as the Indian Ballroom. Each episode will feature multiple lost attractions as well as showcasing defunct amusement parks and theme parks as well as past Americana travel culture in general.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s largest city, is notable for its rich history, on display at the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall (where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed) and other American Revolutionary sites. Also iconic are the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, immortalized by Sylvester Stallone’s triumphant run in the film Rocky.

Blessed with the glamour and culture of a big city, 'Philly' as it's affectionately known, also delights visitors with its rich history and small-town charm. By the late 19th century Philly had evolved into the 'Workshop of the World.' Its industries generated abundant wealth, which funded large construction projects, including City Hall and the Benjamin Franklin Pkwy, and filled cultural storehouses such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Penn Museum. Experiments in architecture and social policy resulted in buildings like Eastern State Penitentiary, while philanthropist Dr Albert C Barnes built up an astounding collection of art for public consumption. Declared a World Heritage City by Unesco in 2015, Philadelphia was at the heart of US colonial and revolutionary history. Visiting original institutions such as Independence Hall and the seeing iconic landmarks like the Liberty Bell will help you appreciate the deep passion for freedom that motivated the new nation's founders. Excellent museums devoted to the Constitution, the American Revolution and Benjamin Franklin round out that education.

Philadelphia is home to many national historical sites that relate to the founding of the United States. Independence National Historical Park is the center of these historical landmarks being one of the country's 22 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed, and the Liberty Bell are the city's most famous attractions. Other national historic sites include the homes of Edgar Allan Poe and Thaddeus Kosciuszko, early government buildings like the First and Second Banks of the United States, Fort Mifflin, and the Gloria Dei (Old Swedes') Church.

Day 1 of 3 - Bike tour // Philadelphia to Delaware Water Gap - Day 1, Upper Black Eddy, PA

Day 1 of my two Day trip to the Delaware Water Gap by bicycle in May of 2017. The first day was to Upper Black Eddy, PA. Just over 70 miles, stopping in New Hope, PA for Lunch along the Delaware.

Hoodlebug Rail Trail from Blairsville to Indiana, PA and back

This is the Hoodlebug Trail, a rail trail in Western Pennsylvania (Indiana County) running from Blairsville to Indiana. It is 10 miles long (16km) , and follows the abandoned Indiana branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The trail passes through Homer City, PA; where the iconic view of the Homer City Power Plant dominates the skyline. The video was made on December 22, 2017 (just before Christmas) right after my last day of work before the holiday. The trail can be accessed at Saylor Park, where it joins the larger Ghost Town Trail (see previous videos for more info.). I began near the southern end at Blacklick, PA, and rode North to Indiana. It got dark on the return trip, so I used timelapse (which is better for low light). This video includes both still images and video. Two cameras were used; a bike mounted GoPro 5, and a Nikkon S9900 digital point and shoot (hand held camera). I attempted to mix the images from the bike with the pictures and hand camera to depict the experience. The first 20-25 minutes or so, I actually go South to the Southern end of the trail, before heading North through Blacklick, PA; where the trail shares the road before entering Saylor Park. I spent a good deal of time in and around Saylor Park, and looking at the creek, before heading North to Indiana, PA. I have included some backwards timelapses taken from the back of my bike to show forward progression on the trail. The scenes progress from dark to light (these are mostly toward the end). -As an interesting side note, the fourth stack at the Homer CIty Power plant (shown several times in the distance in this video) is the tallest chimney/ smokestack in the USA at the time of this video's publication. The stack towers 1,217' in the air (nearly 1/4 mile or 371m). The largest in the world is in Kazakistan and only about 150' taller. Canada has a 1,247' stack, making the Homer City stack the 3rd tallest smoke stack in the world.
