When Prince Harry announced his marriage to Meghan Markle, there was a ton of speculation about just what kind of wedding dress her royal highness-to-be would choose. Would she opt for an elegant Alexander McQueen gown, like Kate Middleton? Or might she choose a piece that paid homage to Harry's late mother, Princess Diana? Others wondered if she'd go a completely different route and choose something totally untraditional to celebrate the spirit of her union. In the end, she seemed to find a happy medium between classic and contemporary with her choice of a stunning Givenchy gown. Like many of her bridal predecessors, Markle's wedding attire was meant to be remembered in the context of royal history, so let's take a look back at all the recent regal wedding gowns, starting with the worst and working our way back up to the best...

ROYAL JEWELLERY TO BE AUCTIONED
Some of Princess Margaret's most personal possessions will go on view today before an auction that is expected to raise more than three million pounds ($5.5 million/euros 4.40 million) .
Up to 800 items of jewellery and art with list prices ranging from under a hundred pounds to a small fortune will go under the hammer at Christie's auction house next week.
But before that, the auction house is putting on a spectacular four day public exhibition of the sale - and opening its doors early to cope with demand.
The pieces range from a necklace she wore as a little girl to the tiara she wore at her wedding to Lord Snowdon in 1960, as well as furniture, silver, and works of art.
Margaret died in 2002 aged 71 after suffering a stroke. Viscount Linley, her son, has come under fire for selling off the family heirlooms, which include his mother's prized wedding gifts, but he said it was necessary to meet her inheritance tax.
The collection featuring almost 200 lots of royal jewels and more than 600 other lots of furniture, china, monogrammed silver boxes and decorative items has been on a world tour shown in Moscow, Hong Kong, Geneva and New York, prior to the sales next Tuesday and Wednesday.
The auctioneers expect the jewels to attract the biggest interest and to eclipse pre-sale price estimations.
Highlights include the Poltimore Tiara, which Margaret wore at Westminster Abbey for the first televised royal wedding and it expected to fetch up to 200,000 ($370,000/ euros 294,000). She later wore the diamond encrusted piece, made in 1870, as a necklace and individual brooches many times.
A necklace of 34 diamonds, totalling about 85 carats, worn by Queen Mary at King George VI's coronation is expected to achieve 300,000. ($550,000/euros 441,000) It is one of many items in the sale given by Queen Mary to her grand-daughter.
Others include a sapphire and diamond brooch to mark the princess's confirmation, accompanied by a handwritten note signed from her loving Grannie.

STORYLINE:
Jewellery from the private collection of the late Princess Margaret, younger sister of Britian's Queen Elizabeth II, went on display at Christie's Auction House in New York on Monday, as part of a travelling exhibition to showcase the jewels for potential buyers.
More than 800 items were on show, ranging from broaches, bracelets and tiaras worn by the Princess during her lifetime.
Jewellery Specialist at Christie's, Helen Molesworth, described the sale as a rare opportunity to present the life of Princess Margaret as a very beautiful tribute of her glamorous years in the 50s and 60s.
The collection features items ranging in price from 200 US dollars to one million (m) US dollars.
After being showcased in New York, the jewels will be shipped to London, where they will go on auction at Christie's on 13th and 14th June.
Molesworth said death duties were the reason why the sale had gone ahead. There was a 40 percent tax levied in Britain, she said.
The money raised in the auction will pay the for some of the inheritance tax the Royal family has to pay.
Amongst the most treasured pieces of the jewellery collection is the 'Poltimore Tiara'.
Created in the 1870s it was worn by the Princess on her wedding day, but it is Queen Mary's Diamond Riviere that is expected to fetch the most at auction - it is valued at close to one million (m) US dollars.

The Pearl Poiré Tiara
The Pearl Poiré Tiara
this historic piece was owned by Queen Margrethe, the piece was probably made around 1825 in Berlin at the request of King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia, as a wedding gift for his daughter Louise, who was marrying Prince Frederik of the Netherlands. This fantastic tiara has 18 drop pearls dangling from a structure of diamond arches.
Princess Louise (1808-1870) left the tiara to her oldest daughter that also named Louise, who was Queen of Sweden and Norway. Queen Louise (1828-1871) died shortly after inheriting the tiara and it quickly passed on to her daughter, who was also named Louise (1851-1926). This Louise tied the knot with the future
King Frederik VIII of Denmark in 1869, and the tiara arrived at its final home.
Queen Louise of Denmark was seen wore and combined the tiara with a few other pearl and diamond pieces such as a demi-parure of a necklace and earrings which had been a wedding gift from the Khedive of Egypt, and a brooch that came from her grandmother. The pieces weren't designed by the same designer, but they worked so well that they became something of an assembled parure, and are still worn together today.
when louise passed away in 1926, she left this piece to the Danish Royal Property Trust, which guarantee that the pieces are not the personal property of any particular royal, so they will pass from monarch to monarch without being sold. Since then the parure has been worn by Louise's daughter-in-law Queen Alexandrine (1879-1952); Alexandrine's daughter-in-law Queen Ingrid (1910-2000); and Ingrid's daughter Queen Margrethe, who wears them today.
This tiara and the Danish Emerald Parure, oftenly seen at the annual New Year's Court gala, one of the most important and formal occasions of the year;
Margrethe also worn the piece to big events like her own jubilee celebrations and Crown Princess Victoria's wedding, as well as plenty of well-known portraits. She's not ready to a tremendous amount of tiara loaning in the first place, but this is one of the pieces that has historically been kept for the queen. Margrethe makes good use of it, though, and it nestles well into her signature updo.
The Pearl Poiré Tiara is part of a prominent subset of pearl tiaras: the pearl drop tiaras, which take advantage of a natural drop shape and dangle those pearls from diamond frameworks. Its pairs include the Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara, the Cambridge Lover's Knot Tiara, and the Cartier Pearl Drop Tiara from Monaco.

The Greek Emerald Parure Tiara
The Greek Emerald Parure Tiara
The tale of this tiara begins with the giant emeralds where the tiara comes from. Sixteen-year-old Grand Duchess Olga Constantinova of Russia brought a magnificent set of cabochon emeralds in many different sizes with her when she married King George I of Greece in 1867.
In queen olga's reign as the queen, The emeralds were separate pieces and she wore them as such, pinning them to her dress and kokoshnik, and hanging them from her necklace and so on. When Queen Elisabeth of Greece married King George II who was Olga's grandson and inherited the emeralds after her death in 1926, the piece began to take the shape of the set we know today.
after time goes by and it is Frederika's turn to wore the piece, the tiara had changed into the design we know today. The band around the top and edges had been removed. Frederika usually use the tiara as a necklace, often in combination with the massive Queen Sophie's Diamond Tiara that we just saw reappear. On Frederikaera, we also see the final parure which put the rest of the setuse cabochon emeralds.
The parure has the tiara, a pair of earrings with emerald drops, a brooch made of more diamond E shapes and emeralds, and 5 independent emerald drops which can be suspended from the brooch. When Princess Anne-Marie of Denmark married King Constantine II, Frederika handed the emeralds over to the new queen.
Queen Anne-Marie uses the tiara as a tiara, not a necklace like her late mother-in-law, and makes up a necklace to go with by suspending varying numbers of emerald drops and sometimes the entire emerald brooch from a diamond necklace. She often uses a necklace given to her by her mother, Queen Ingrid of Denmark, for this task. The necklace was originally comes from Anne-Marie's grandmother, Queen Alexandrine, and was initially a longer piece. Ingrid separated it in two, and gave one part of Anne-Marie and one part to her sister Benedikte.
