Ayampe - the most magical surf town on Earth.
Puerto Lopez - with the wonderful Hosteria Mandala.
Isla de la Plata (also known as the poor man's Galapagos) - and some blue footed boobies.
Comunidad Agua Blanca in Machalilla National Park - and the sulfuric mud that I accidentally tasted.
Montañita - the party town where one afternoon was perfectly sufficient for us old broads.

Yoga: For yoga (and home-baked bread!) in Ayampe, we went to the wonderful Otra Ola
Getting there: From the Oriente, we took a bus to Quito, flew to Guayaquil on Avianca Air ( and then took a bus from Guayaquil via Jipijapa to Puerto Lopez (and returned from Ayampe to Guayaquil by bus from Olón, near Montañita).
Isla de la Plata: For day tours of Isla de la Plata (an island which is part of Machalilla National Park), arrange with any of the tour businesses along the Puerto Lopez malecón. Our tour was part exploring the island and seeing blue footed boobies and part snorkeling, though during whale season the snorkeling is replaced with humpback whale watching! Tours are generally between 30 and 40 USD per person.
Surfing: Though we were not brave enough to try surfing, there are lots of opportunities to learn to surf in Montañita, Ayampe, and Puerto Lopez, and of course, lots of opportunities for experienced surfers to enjoy the waves as well!
Mostly, in conclusion: visit Ayampe!!!

I hope you guys enjoyed this coastal adventure in Ecuador! This is day 4, and it's officially time to unwind as we head back to the city. In this video, you'll get a small taste of Olon, Puerto Lopez and Los Frailes (one of my favorite hidden gems). If you visit these places, PLEASE try cazuela de camaron and thank me later!

Los Frailes Beach:
You can drive or take a bus from the terminal just outside of Puerto Lopez. The park entrance is free and you'll either walk (bring sneakers) or pay for a tuk-tuk to drive you to the beach entrance. The beach closes at 430pm and becomes dangerous to swim in (especially near the cave).
Boobies in Isla de la Plata?
A group of adventurous travelers from Salinas took a trip up the coast of Ecuador to Puerto Lopez back in August 2016. The small fishing town of Puerto Lopez is well known as one of the best whale watching destinations in all of Ecuador, with thousands of humpback whales migrating off the shores of Isla de la Plata. Isla de la Plata is a small island, better know as the Poor mans Galapagos Island, inside of Machalilla National Park. Established in 1979, Machalilla National Park near Puerto Lopéz rests along the Pacific coast. It incorporates beaches, fog forest, dry forest, small islands and two larger islands, Salango and Isla de la Plata, the latter named for a legendary hoard of silver left by Sir Francis Drake. Many exotic bird species can be found on this island including the blue footed boobies with magnificent and picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean. The tour operator Piman Travel S.A (PimanTravel.com) took care of all of our travel and whale watching needs for our group. Always very organized which definitely makes our adventure exciting. 90 minutes south of Manta on Ecuador's Pacific Coast is the fishing village of Puerto Lopez. With the exception of a new gas station and a couple new banks, not much has changed in Puerto Lopez since InternationalLiving.com editors Suzan Haskins and Dan Prescher first visited here 10 years ago. The beach is still wide and flat, the fishing is still good, and the humpback whales still come up from the south every June through September to mate just offshore. Whale watching is a large part of the tourist industry here, but fishing is still the mainstay of the economy.

A Tour of Ecuador's Southern Coast
Whenever you hear about the Pacific Ocean beaches of Ecuador, often the focus is mostly on the two more populated cities on the coast—the port city of Manta and the resort town of Salinas. My wife and I live in Salinas, but recently we embarked on a road trip, taking a week to cover the four-hour drive along the Ruta del Sol between those two major destinations, and a bit further north of Manta. We saw a lot of beautiful places, and met many interesting people. This video will give you a look at just seven of the beach towns we visited, giving you an idea of the range of options available on Ecuador’s coast.
Listed from south to north, you will get a taste of Ayangue, Montañita, Ayampe, Salango, Puerto Lopez, Santa Marianita, and the “twin cities” of San Jacinto/San Clemente.
Of course, all of these towns have great beaches, that is pretty much a given on Ecuador’s coast. But we found that each place was also a unique destination to be enjoyed for its own particular charm and lifestyle.

Ayampe, Ecuador - A Sleepy Beach Town in Manabí
A sleepy beach town with several options to find good food, good housing and the place to find a peace of mind. Only a 20 minutes bus ride to the party town of Montañita, if thats what you want to do. In this case I stayed in Ayampe with the love of my life. Also, a special appearance from the homies of SALÚ from Guayaquil with special guests Merceditas and Juan Sebastian.
