Putaruru is a small town in the South Waikato District of Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island. It is on the Oraka Stream 65 kilometres south-east of Hamilton. The actual Māori-language origin of the town's name is thought to be the word Putaaruru – To come forth like a ruru ; sometimes translated as 'Home of the Owl'.

1. Waikato River Trails Putaruru
The Waikato River Trails is a combined walk- and cycleway along the Waikato River. Originally conceived and started by local politicians and trustees, in 2009 the trails became one of the seven Quick Start Projects that form the beginning of the New Zealand Cycle Trail. The trail is proposed to be 100 km long, out of which 50 km existed before the NZCT scheme was created. In mid-2011, work on the last sections of the cycle trail project sections was begun, while the official grand opening occurred early November 2011.

Mount Maunganui, or Mauao, commonly known by locals as The Mount, is an extinct volcanic cone at the end of a peninsula and the town of Mount Maunganui, by the eastern entrance to the Tauranga Harbour in New Zealand. It is considered very important and tapu by the local Māori iwi, featuring extensively in local mythology. It is also of significant historical value. The summit is 232 metres above sea level. In recent years there have been several fires on the mountain, in turn triggering a number of replanting efforts. Since Mount Maunganui has been open to the general public it has become a popular location for many activities including scenic walks, jogging and even hang gliding.

The Waimangu Volcanic Rift Valley is the hydrothermal system created on 10 June 1886 by the volcanic eruption of Mount Tarawera, on the North Island of New Zealand. Putaruru Blue Spring & The Arapuni Swingbridge - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year

Day 24: Today we’re checking out the beautiful Putaruru Blue Spring and crossing the Arapuni Swingbridge on our tour with our backpacker hostel hosts.

About this video:

First things first, we are in Arapuni, a small town in the Waikato region with a big swingbridge! Our hosts at the Arapuni Backpackers take us on a bit of tour to the Arapuni Swing Bridge, which crossed the Waikato River, before furthering our walk to check out the hydropower dams and spillways. We have time for a quick lunch back at the Arapuni Backpackers before hitting the road on this backpacking New Zealand trip once again.

But before we leave this part of the Waikato, there is one more place we have to visit: The Putaruru Blue Spring which sits along the Te Waihou Walkway. The Te waihou Walkway follows a winding river of the bluest yet clearest water full of brilliant green river weed. The Putaruru Blue Spring is like something from a fairy tale. There are a few viewing platforms and bridges to take some awesome photos of the Putaruru Blue Spring and get some incredible views of it.

Finally, we are hitting the road to our next stop, Otorohanga and the Waitomo area. Join us tomorrow for what we can promise you is going to be a ridiculously weird day!

3 Days in Rotorua, New Zealand

I spent 3 days in Rotorua, New Zealand. From the spa to walks around the smelly lake to a Maori cultural show, Rotorua was an amazing stop on my backpacking trip through New Zealand.

I tried a little different style of filming for this. I'm not sure I really like it but decided I'd upload it anyways. I doubt I'll film like this again but enjoy!
