Châteaux of the Loire Valley
The Châteaux of the Loire Valley are part of the architectural heritage of the historic towns of Amboise, Angers, Blois, Chinon, Montsoreau, Nantes, Orléans, Saumur, and Tours along the Loire River in France. They illustrate Renaissance ideals of design in France.
By the middle of the 16th century, King François I had shifted the center of power in France from the Loire back to the ancient capital of Paris. With him went the great architects, but the Loire Valley continued to be the place where most of the French royalty preferred to spend the bulk of their time. The ascension to the throne of King Louis XIV in the middle of the 17th century made Paris the permanent site for great royal châteaux when he built the Palace of Versailles. Nonetheless, those who gained the king's favour and the wealthy bourgeoisie continued to renovate existing châteaux or build lavish new ones as their summer residence in the Loire.
The French Revolution saw a number of the great French châteaux destroyed and many ransacked, their treasures stolen. The overnight impoverishment of many of the deposed nobility, usually after one of its members lost his or her head to the guillotine, saw many châteaux demolished. During World War I and World War II, some chateaux were commandeered as military headquarters. Some of these continued to be used this way after the end of World War II.
Today, these privately owned châteaux serve as homes, a few open their doors to tourist visits, while others are operated as hotels or bed and breakfasts. Many have been taken over by a local government authority, or the giant structures like those at Chambord are owned and operated by the national government and are major tourist sites, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

In the Great Stables, a visit to the Galerie des Carrosses reveals the largest royal construction site ever undertaken to house horses. Majestic carriages or small cars of the children of Marie-Antoinette, sedan chairs or sledges forming a strange and wonderful bestiary: the discovery of these works is an exceptional testimony of the life of Court and splendor under the Old Regime, the Empire and the Restoration.
Erected by Hardouin-Mansart between 1679 and 1682, the buildings of the Great Stable and the Small Stable are identical, their denomination not taking their dimensions but their assignment under the Old Regime. To the north, the Great Stable, under the authority of the Grand Ecuyer of France, called Monsieur le Grand, is in charge of the horses of hand, perfectly trained for hunting and war. Cars and fancy cars, sledges and gondolas were under the Ancien Régime at the Petite Ecurie run by the First Squire, called Monsieur le Premier, who also had the care of the horses and mounts used to the ordinary.
The gallery of coaches is located on the ground floor of the Grande Ecurie. It consists of two vaulted galleries allowing a major redeployment of the collections on nearly 1000 m 2 . The collection of Versailles coaches does not include any travel vehicles but consists only of large ceremonial saloons. Thus, each car tells a page of the history of France through a dynastic or political event: wedding Napoleon I er , baptism of the Duke of Bordeaux , the coronation of Charles X funeral of Louis XVIII. Designed to hit the spirits, these carriages are total works of art. Of ostentatious luxury, adorned with gold and sculptures, a dazzling meeting of all the decorative arts, they were made by the best artists and craftsmen: architects, carpenters, sculptors, painters, bronziers, gilders, upholsterers, embroiderers etc.
The coach of the Corps, intended to show the sovereign, and the many carriages in succession roll at a pace, about 3 km / h. Today we must imagine the splendor of these great cavalcades in the midst of a jubilant crowd, these processions bringing together about forty cars covered with gold and impressive dimensions, the beauty of hundreds of horses plumed and the roar of hooves on the cobblestones.
The visit of the gallery of the coaches also offers a film tracing the history of the horse since the reign of Louis XIV , because beyond their artistic quality, these cars reveal the latest advances of the French bodywork in terms of elegance , comfort and technique.

The Rothschilds are legendary as one of the greatest European banking families ever, having amassed the largest private fortune in modern history. They own grand estates and Chateaus throughout the world.
However, this once palatial estate just outside of Paris is in serious need of a complete renovation. Instead of it becoming a construction site where it is lovingly repaired and restored it has degraded into a playground for vermin, graffiti artists and vandals.
