Colombo Travel Guide - Sri Lanka Astonishing Experience
Colombo Travel Guide - Sri Lanka Astonishing Experience
Colombo (Sinhala: කොළඹ, Tamil: கொழும்பு) is the largest city and the financial and commercial capital of Sri Lanka. Colombo remains both the commercial and financial capital of Sri Lanka even after the administrative capital has been moved to Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, a suburb east of the city.
Colombo is a huge, sprawling city, which can be visited any time of year due to its tropical climate. The traffic can feel somewhat overwhelming at first but it is organised and much more manageable when compared to other major cities of South and Southeast Asia. Colombo as a city has been discussed in historical records for over two millenia. The city boasts an incredible level of cultural diversity that can be experienced through its eclectic architecture and cuisine. Sri Lankan are very friendly, highly educated and worldly. In Colombo you will experience tradition blending with progressive values with English being spoken widely.
Getting around by Tuk-Tuk (Three wheeler, Tri-shaw) is generally the most convenient option in Colombo. There is a good, cheap public bus service but you need to know the route number of the bus that you would have to take to your destination. Train services are available to some of the main cities from Colombo but they are infrequent.
Like many cities, Colombo's urban area extends well beyond the boundaries of a single local authority, encompassing other municipal and urban councils such as Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte Municipal Council, Dehiwala Mount Lavinia Municipal Council, Kolonnawa Urban Council, Kaduwela Municipal Council and Kotikawatte Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha. The main city is home to a majority of Sri Lanka's corporate offices, restaurants and entertainment venues.[11] Famous landmarks in Colombo include Galle Face Green, Viharamahadevi Park, Beira Lake, Colombo Racecourse, Planetarium, University of Colombo, Mount Lavinia beach, Nelum Pokuna Theatre, Colombo Lotus Tower as well as the National Museum.

Colombo's cheap lodgings in the center of town, apart from the famous YMCA (containing a gay bathhouse), are mostly concentrated along the road opposite the Colombo Fort Railway Station. Many rooms are available but with shared bathrooms starting around 900 LKR. Buy a lunch packet from street stands practically anywhere in the city. Typically, it will be a filling meal of rice and vegetables for about LKR120. Around Fort Railway Station there are several local restaurants with the sign Hotel, these actually are restaurants and not hotels, this usage of the word Hotel seems to be unique to Sri Lanka and India.
( Colombo - Sri Lanka ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Colombo . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Colombo - Sri Lanka

Get in[edit]
From Colombo you can take the train or bus. Both travel right next to the beach coast and have beautiful views. This is why getting in is one of the best things about Galle.
Bus no. 2 takes you to Galle (with the sign indicating the destination on the bus) and costs around Rs. 230 on an air-conditioned bus, and takes around 3 hours to reach (if the bus takes the Southern Expressway it should only take about 1 hour). Buses that take Southern Expressway starts from Kaduwela Bus Station located near the starting of the expressway in Colombo. It takes 45 mins from Colombo Fort by bus to Kaduwela Bus Station. From there air condition buses to Galle costs 390 LKR (take about 1 hour).
Depending on traffic, or how many stops the train makes, traveling from Colombo city can be anywhere from 2.5 to 4 hours.
Coming from the Kandy region, buses also run to Galle via Matara. They will take between 8 to 10 hours, cost approximately 150 LKR and have a few stopovers along the way. Despite the stopovers, a 10 hour ride on this non-AC bus is unpleasant, but an experience nonetheless.
Get around[edit]
Tuk Tuk or on foot is your best bet if you are traveling in Galle or close by.
The bus is an easy and cheap way to get to Matara,Unawatuna or Hikkaduwa from Galle.

The Kalutara temple is a place you must not miss.
If you are superstitious, you may consider making a donation and saying a prayer at Seenigama temple for good luck.
A walk along the Fort's walls at sunset is very pleasant if you don't mind being hassled to buy table cloths, fake antique 'Dutch' coins, or powdered milk.
Be wary of unauthorized local or foreign guides who offer you a walk round the Fort for a fee. Walking round the Fort is free. Local Authorities do not charge any fees.
The south ramparts of Galle Fort
The Peace Pagoda and the view from on a clear day is also quite lovely.

Destination Unknown The Real Sri lanka Episode 9
To find the real Sri Lanka, all you have to do is travel on the back roads. My driver Bandar took me to see his home town.It turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip to Sri Lanka. This was a true Destination Unknown.
The Sri Lankan Railways - Part 1 Colombo to Kandy - Semaphores, Token exchanges and more.
When one thinks of destinations for train travel Sri Lanka is not on the top or even on most people's list, a shame because this small island nation is home to some of the most scenic and well preserved railways on the planet. In many places it seems time stands still as trains as still controlled by tokens and semaphore signals, a system that is the envy of any heritage railway but even better, its all still real! Our trip today will be on Sri Lanka's first railway, the mainline which runs from the countries capital in Colombo to the upcountry city of Kandy. We will travel on the double track high speed commuter line and then onto the twisty mountain railway into the Allagala mountain range. We will stop at many points along the way and get a firsthand look at the time honored token exchange process. So come along for this visit to one of the mot fascinating rail systems in the world.
