Setting: The setting of our play is a Wirtshaus (a tavern or inn), in Mittenwald - a town amid the Alpine peaks of Bavaria. It is late November of 1896. During this era, Schuhplattler groups and Trachtenvereine began to form in Bavarian and Austrian towns and villages with the purpose of preserving their unique local clothing, customs, dances, and music.
Learn German! Glossary of terms from our show:
Bauerntheater or “Farmer’s Theater” is a style of dramatic performance presenting popular folk characters or themes in German speaking areas. The artistic form shares similarities to Melodrama, although Farmer’s Theater productions are often comedies. The setting of the play is usually located in geographical proximity to the place the play is being performed, and the persons involved in the action are taken from the local rural population. The performers are mostly amateurs, but professional productions are not uncommon.
A Special Note On Our Krampus Masks:
The carved wooden masks that we are featuring for the first time in this year’s production were a special gift from members Hans and Hanna Habereder. The Habereders commissioned the masks to be created by master sculptor Walter Reiser, of Mittenwald, Germany. Reiser carved the “rather friendly” Krampus masks from Swiss Cone Pine and it took him a total of 40 hours of carving and painting to complete the masks. The masks feature natural horns and hair from Billy-goats. The Habereders met with Reiser on their annual trip to Mittenwald, Germany to pick up the masks and shipped them back to the USA for our presentation.
Die Gemuetlichen Schuhplattler group, in conjunction with The Phoenix Club, are presenting this evening’s play at our own expense in order to share and educate about the Christmastime traditions and stories of our culture. We are pleased to invite the general public to our event free of charge again this year. Die Gemuetlichen Schuhplattler has recently become a 501c3 non-profit organization. Donations to help make sure we can continue this wonderful tradition in the future are greatly appreciated. Every year 500 of the world’s toughest motocross riders descend on the small town of Eisenerz (which literally translates to “iron ore”) in Austria in an attempt to finish one of the most difficult enduro races in the world. How difficult? It’s so challenging that only a handful of competitors even finish the race, and most won’t even make it to the halfway check point.

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue / Colloquy 4: The Joe Miller Joke Book / Report on the We-Uns
After Miller's death, John Mottley (1692--1750) brought out a book called Joe Miller's Jests, or the Wit's Vade-Mecum (1739), published under the pseudonym of Elijah Jenkins Esq. at the price of one shilling. This was a collection of contemporary and ancient coarse witticisms, only three of which are told of Miller. This first edition was a thin pamphlet of 247 numbered jokes. This ran to three editions in its first year.
Later (not wholly connected) versions were entitled with names such as Joe Miller's Joke Book, and The New Joe Miller to latch onto the popularity of both Joe Miller himself and the popularity of Mottley's first book. It should be noted that joke books of this format (i.e. Mr Smith's Jests) were common even before this date. It was common practice to learn one or two jokes for use at parties etc.
Owing to the quality of the jokes in Mottley's book, their number increasing with each of the many subsequent editions, any time-worn jest came to be called a Joe Miller, a Joe-Millerism, or simply a Millerism.
Joke 99 states:
A Lady's Age happening to be questioned, she affirmed she was but Forty, and called upon a Gentleman that was in Company for his Opinion; Cousin, said she, do you believe I am in the Right, when I say I am but Forty? I ought not to dispute it, Madam, reply'd he, for I have heard you say so these ten Years.

Joe Miller was referred to in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol (1843), by the character Scrooge, who remarks Joe Miller never made such a joke as sending [the turkey] to Bob's will be!
Joe Miller was also referred to in James Joyce's Ulysses (1922) in the limerick that Lenehan whispers during the Aeolus episode to Stephen Dedalus, the last line of which is I can't see the Joe Miller. Can you?.
According to Leonard Feinberg, the 1734 edition contains one of the oldest examples of gallows humor.

Have Fun at the Best Oktoberfest
BRING YOUR OWN STEIN: You can bring your own empty stein or other drinking vessel to Oktoberfest. Please note that at Oktoberfest we will not fill your stein directly. We sell our Bier in a cup and you can then pour the bier into your own stein.
TABLE RESERVATIONS: The Phoenix Club does not reserve tables at Oktoberfest. Table space can be claimed on a first-come, first-serve basis. As in Bavaria, it is not uncommon to share tables with strangers on busier weekends, our Biergarten and Tent sport long tables and bench seats. All you have to do is ask if there is free space: “Ist das platz frei, bitte?” However, it is advisable to not sit down at a Stammtisch (table with a table cloth or sign) even if you find it to be completely empty, since this is a table designated for members of a group or society, available to their membership only or by invitation.
ADMISSION: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Adults are $10, Phoenix Club members with card $5 - 18 and under enter FREE. Sept. 25-27, will be military appreciation weekend. Active and retired military get in free with military ID, and bring in one guest for free as well.
Get your tickets early and avoid the lines at the gates. Admission Tickets and Food and Drink Tickets are on sale Now and Through Oktoberfest at the Phoenix Club Office. NO AGE RESTRICTIONS: All ages are welcome on all days. Admission wristbands for Adults 21 years or older with valid ID’s are required for alcohol purchase. Children’s playground and activities are available everyday.
PARKING: Is completely free, though it is impacted. Arrive early for easy parking. Carpooling is highly recommended.
SHOOTING GALLERY: Our Phoenix Schützen (traditional air rifle club) will have their rifle range open to the public on Saturdays (6:00 PM) and Sundays (1:00 PM) Oct. 3 – Oct 31.
PONY RIDES: Our Neighbors at the Del Rio Stables and Equestrian Center will host $5.00 Pony Rides for the kids all Sundays in October. Just across the parking lot from the Biergarten gate.
