Saguenay–Lac-St-Jean Route | QuébecOriginal and Go-Van
The Saguenay‒Lac-Saint-Jean region seemed like the perfect place for two Vancouver photographers to discover the great outdoors of Québec. That's what prompted Julien Roussin-Côté of the Go-Van blog to invite Kyla Trethewey and Jillian Mann of the Our Wild Abandon blog to “Bleuet” (Blueberry) Country, the nickname given to the people of the region.

Winter Canadian Cottage Tour
Come join us for Canadian Cottage tour in winter as we showcase the property we rented for a holiday retreat with family at Seeley's Bay nearby Kingston, Ontario. The log cottage was the perfect size for the whole family as it comfortably fit 8 adults including Audrey's Mom and Dad, two sisters, family friend, brother inlaw and me. Vacationing there over the Christmas holidays meant we huddled by the wood burning stove for entertainment, conversation, snacks and games. With more rooms than bodies to fill them we all comfortably got our own rooms. Some of our favorite features of this three story cottage included a huge living room, game room (both upstairs and downstairs) an enormous kitchen and picture perfect views from the balcony overlooking the frozen lake. It truly was a winter wonderland escape and the type of vacation we'll hopefully take more in the future.

Winter Canadian Cottage Tour Video Transcript:
Good morning guys. It is -30 below here in Canada and I can feel the insides of my nostrils freezing. I feel like icicles are forming and my lips are freezing so I can't even speak properly. Today we are going to give you guys a cottage tour as part of our winter vacation. A beautiful log cabin so we spending eight nights here out in the forest. We are like 30 minutes north of Kingston and Seeley's Bay. We are by a lake. I'm getting mauled by the dog Togo. The German Shepherd.
This video is going to be the cabin tour because it is a beautiful home. Let's go inside before we freeze, take our layers off and we'll begin the tour. Come along Togo.
We've got my parents hanging out. They are escaping. Sorry we were going. They are running away out the living room. Now they're running away. This is the living area. This is where we've been hanging out every single day. We have this massive fireplace that heats up the whole space. I would say this is probably my favorite part of the house. Like the dog is the smartest one in the house. It ends up sleeping here at night. It just curls up on the blanket right in front of the fireplace.
Then we have this um like open kitchen and dining area. Yep. So we have this massive table like with banquets. We're going to be eight people later this week and it has been perfectly fine.
This looks like an old canoe that has been turned into a wine rack. We went to the LCBO before coming out here and we bought enough wine for what we thought would be 8 days.
We have 2 bedrooms on this floor and double beds in every single room. As you can see basically the whole house is just these massive logs as their walls. It feels so cozy and toasty in here.
We have a giant telescope and a bathroom here on the ground floor. This is 3 levels. There is a basement and there is also an upstairs too.
Let's start with the game room. We've been spending a bit of time up here actually because this place is stalked with board games. We have a collection of like yeah puzzles, monopoly, trivial pursuit. We've been playing games at night.
I forget how many bedrooms there are but it can sleep 10 people. We can fit 10 people. 10 people and that is not like sleeping on the couch or anything like some of these. No you've got your own room your own bed.
Last spot to show you guys is the balcony which probably has two feet of snow. We haven't really been shoveling here. And a dog right in front of us. We'll show you the views. We've got the lake right there. This must be beautiful in the summertime. We also have a barbecue.
So we'll leave you with views, icicles and a few shots of me shoveling the snow. And Togo my dog playing in the snow.
This is part of our Travel in Canada video series showcasing Canadian food, Canadian culture and Canadian cuisine.

Entry Title: Saguenay Fjord -- Deep and Long but not very Tall
Entry:
I'd heard as a schoolboy that the Saguenay Fjord was one of the longest in the world. Years later someone told me the area around Tadoussac was pretty, sparsely developed and inviting. Given a spare day or two that's all the reason I need to explore a new place. Plus it would give my kids a chance to see a fjord in North America and an opportunity to do some whale watching. So we made the drive downriver on the north shore of the St. Lawrence, about 3 1/2 hours past Quebec City to Les Escoumins. We chose to stay in Les Escoumins because it offered attractive fairly priced condo rentals situated right on the banks of the St. Lawrence River -- a chance to watch the river and its traffic up close and hopefully see a few whales. Beluga whales frequent the area and I've never seen them in the wild before so I was hopeful.
This drive northeast of Quebec City takes you through picturesque Charlevoix, a less affluent but beautiful part of the province that I found especially notable for Its numerous cheese producing farms (each with its own label -- much like you might find in rural France). The topography is typical of the Canadian Shield and is heavily forested, with mixed coniferous and deciduous trees that must be especially beautiful when decorated in their fall canopy. The road is good and in due time we made it to the (free) ferry service which crosses the mouth of the Saguenay Fjord. The ride across the fjord is relaxing, picturesque and takes about 10 minutes, but the true length of the Fjord (about 100 miles) can not be fathomed from this initial encounter. The terrain around the fjord is again typical of the Canadian Shield, with rolling rounded granite hills covered by a mixed forest -- nothing like the tall, steep, rugged mountainous fjords of Norway or New Zealand.
As one drives off the ferry on the eastern side of the fjord the village of Tadoussac is immediately to the right. We continued past this turnoff and drove another 20 minutes further downriver to the village of Les Escoumins where we checked in for our two night/one day stay. This was the first time on our trip to Quebec where language became somewhat of an issue. No one in the registration office spoke English and I barely speak any French. Still, with gestures and a preprinted reservation notice we managed to work things out. I ran into a similar problem as I tried to tank up the van we'd rented. The gas station attendant spoke no English but we finally figured out how to get the gas paid for and pumped into my tank. So as you head out of the main cities into rural Quebec its good idea to have a French phrasebook with you.
The condo was nice with beautiful views of the St. Lawrence River. Unfortunately we arrived a few weeks before the whales start running in any number and didn't see a single fluke or blow out there. Still, there was a nice hiking trail beside the river which we enjoyed using several times, and the views up the St. Lawrence were beautiful.
We spent a day visiting Tadoussac and part of the Saguenay Fjord. Tadoussac is an historic though small village with its past including First Nations settlements, the fur trade, timber industry and now a focus on tourism. Tadoussac is dominated by the large Hotel Tadoussac, an elegant old whitewashed hotel with eye-catching firetruck red roof, which has been vacation resort for almost 150 years and the setting for some films including the Hotel New Hampshire. The town is quaint and picturesque and has a beautiful harbor. Located on the hotel grounds is a Chapel said to be the oldest church in North America. There's a trail that extends from the harbor area around the point at the mouth of the ...

Whale Watching in Saguenay, Quebec, July 2015. Part I
Saguenay (sæɡəˈne) is located about 200 km (120 mi) north of Quebec city, on the Saguenay River. Every year, from May to September, whales come there hunting for plankton and huge flocks of fish in St. Lawrence River. From time to time, approximately once in 10 minutes, they have to come up to the surface to breathe. They make 3-5 breathes and then dive into deep water. Whale is the biggest animal on the planet, measured in elephants - up to 40 :-)

China and the revival of Taoism
What is Taoism and why did it have a revival in China in the last 30 years? Is Taoism a religion how we know it and how are people in China living Taoism? And speaking of Taoism, what do people mean with the term Tao? Is Taoism and Tao a philosophy or how do we have to understand it as outsiders?
In the fourth episode, Ruben Terlou travels to the mountains and learns more about Taoism.
In the mountain area where the Tao originated are still monks who are looking for the truth and enlightenment. There is a part of China that is hard to understand for our Photographer. When people in China speak of immortality, harmony and the ultimate effortlessness. Some Chinese go into the mountains alone. Others train in kung fu temples for years or sit under a rock. If you study the Tao, your spirit will live forever, they say. But what do they found under a rock and what made them study the Tao?
Ruben Terlou travels to the area where the main Chinese religions originated, including Taoism. There he is trying to find out the value of Tao for young people and meets an old hermit who has been living in a cave for decades. Mao´s Cultural Revolution wiped nearly out all religion, that was 50 or 60 years ago. But over the last 30 years, Taoism has seen a remarkable revival. A fact, that can be seen on the mountain where Master Lao, a giant gold statue of a bearded man, has been placed. Laotze or Master Lao wrote the main book about the Tao, the book “the Tao Te Ching”.
Photographer Terlou tries to understand what Taoism is by doing it. In the Wudang mountains, where the cradle of Taoist martial arts lies, he visits a modern kung fu temple. Surprisingly the center is mainly focused on Western students. The kung fu master demonstrates an ancient Taoist kung fu style that students have to learn it by seeing it once.
