30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
Today we have just a short activity but one definitely worth doing if you are passing through Motueka in the Nelson Tasman Region. We are doing the walk to the Riwaka Resurgence in the Kahurangi National Park.
Despite the rain, we venture into the Kahurangi National Park on the Riwaka Resurgence Walk. The walk is only about 15 minutes through dense native New Zealand forest alongside the rapids and waterfalls of the Riwaka River.
At the end of the Riwaka Resurgence walk we arrive at the resurgence of the Riwaka River – a river emerging from underneath a mountain. There are information panels to tell of the Maori significance of the area and what this place means to the local culture of New Zealand.
We race the rain back to the campervan where we head back to Marahau and hope for better weather for our activity tomorrow.
So what do you think of the Riwaka Resurgence? Is it a place you would do a pit stop at in the Kahurangi National Park?

Things to do in Motueka - Salt water pool - What does Coco think of the water?
Things to do in Motueka - Salt water pool. Just north of Nelson New Zealand and south of Riwaka, lies a little town called Motueka. Motueka's beach is very shallow and during low tide the water just goes straight out. So they built a pool on the beach! when the tide comes in the fresh seawater just replenishes the pool.

Pepin Island, 875 Cable Bay, Nelson
Pepin is a unique property in New Zealand, if not the world: an entire private island, 1,280 acres, with easy road access 20 minutes drive from Nelson, a thriving NZ city with a national airport.
Pepin is an extraordinarily beautiful place that captivates visitors. It is its own spectacular landscape with rolling paddocks, native bush, sea, cliffs and beaches. Extensive tracks and paths around the island provide access to secluded beaches and coves rarely visited by people.
Pepin is a successful farm combining grazing, orchard, pine plantations and discrete, small scale tourism accommodation. The island carries approximately 1,900 sheep and 100 cattle, with the temperate climate and soil allowing all year grazing. There is abundant water with springs near the top of the island gravity-feeding water tanks and irrigation systems around the island. Regular testing has shown the water quality to be exceptionally pure.
Pepin has extensive accommodation for owners, tenants and short stay guests. The farmhouse is a traditional weatherboard home with seven bedrooms and there are three cottages nearby. Farm buildings include a woolshed, stockyards, multi-bay sheds, storerooms and shelters around the island.
There is a large orchard with a very wide variety of fruit trees, macadamia and olive trees, as well as a small pine plantation nearing maturity. Almost all of the island is frost-free, providing a productive and long growing season.
Three eco-chalets on spectacular parts of the island are a chance to enjoy a night or two away from the world. These chalets are very popular with guests walking the island and experiencing the magic of Pepin.
Pepin is connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway with gated access, allowing you to come and go whenever you want. 1,280 acres of private island, near a city and with easy access, Pepin is a very rare combination anywhere in the world.
