    Hawks Nest State Park is located on 370 acres in Fayette County near Ansted, West Virginia. The park's clifftop overlook along U.S. Route 60 provides a scenic vista of the New River, some 750 feet below. The hydro-electric project tunnel that passes underneath nearby Gauley Mountain was the scene of the tragic Depression-era Hawks Nest Tunnel disaster. The original building, now a gift shop and museum, was built as a Civilian Conservation Corps project. The park lodge was constructed in 1967 by The Architects Collaborative . The park's lodge and aerial gondola to the river are located about a mile further east from the overlook along U.S. 60, closer to the center of Ansted.

Cedar Lakes Conference Center is in Ripley, West Virginia. Operated by the state department of education it is the site of community, public school, Elderhostel, and craft related events. For me, this trip was a chance to spend four days in the wood room using one of their new Jet lathes. What a beautiful place to experience the fall leaves and cool weather.

Upper Falls Of Coal River

Kids and adults have been swimming here for generations. This section was part of an old Grist Mill. I love the way you can see the flat bedrock in this video and photos.
