Places to see in ( Cantabria - Spain ) Santona
Santoña is a town in the eastern coast of the autonomous community of Cantabria, on the north coast of Spain. It is situated by the bay of the same name. It is 45 kilometres from the capital Santander.
The history of Santoña has always been linked to the sea, to such an extent that it is the Cantabrian's major canning port. Its industry is based above all on the commercialization of tuna and its famous anchovies in olive oil.
Santoña is divided into two areas: the town centre, which sits on a plain, and a mountainous area on the slopes of El Brusco and El Buciero. The history of the town is linked to the Monastery of Santa María del Puerto, which later gave rise to the Romanesque church of Santa María del Puerto.
It was built between the 13th and 17th centuries and houses a reredos of San Bartolomé with Flemish paintings from the 15th century. Equally significant are its military fortifications, grouped around the mountain of Buciero, which is evidence of the strategic importance of the port. Still in good condition are the forts of San Martín, San Carlos and Mazo or Napoleon.

Places to see in ( Cantabria - Spain ) Playa De Berria
Places to see in ( Cantabria - Spain ) Playa De Berria
The Playa de Berria is located in the town of Santona ( Cantabria , Spain ). It is a beach that is in the isthmus that connects the peninsula that forms the mount Buciero (in Santoña ) with the municipality of Argoños .
Playa De Berria 2,200 meters of length are developed between Mount Brusco, to the west, and the massif of Buciero to the east. Its sand is white and fine, has a gentle slope and is decorated with the Blue Flag . It opens to the sea on the north side, to the south are the marshes of Santoña . Through the CA-907 road you can easily access both from Santoña and from Argoños .
Playa De Berria etymology comes from the term watercress , a plant that grows in watery places and can be found in the Santoña Marshes south of the beach. In the seventeenth century it is registered the name of Playa de Berrio , with the characteristic yod epenthetic Cantabrian .
Being a place close to Vizcaya, popular etymology associated it for some time with the term Basque Berria , whose meaning is new. For that reason during the century XX was added occasionally such adjective giving rise to the tautopónimo Beach of New Berria and thus it was collected in some publications. As in many popular etymologies it was based solely on phonetic coincidence, since the arenal was not of new formation and it has been known since there is human presence. Its official name and generalized at present and from at least the XVII century is simply Arenal or Playa de Berria.

I impulsively booked a flight to Madrid when the travel bug caught a hold of me - but after contemplating four days in a city, I decided to head north. About as North as you can go in Spain - to the city of Santander. From there, I rented a car and set out on this journey.

Santander, the capital of the Cantabria region, is Northern Spain’s most elegant city. Our visit digs below its surface beauty, to unearth a vibrancy and flavour that few visitors get to experience.
Together we will take an early-morning culinary tour of Santander's central farmers’ market where colours and aromas combine to create an intoxicating gastronomic experience. Here you will find only the most succulent fruit and vegetables, freshest seafood, cheeses and meats from local producers. This is slow-food taken to the next level.
After a visit to this lively market, you will enjoy an afternoon of gathering with your friends or family to eat, drink and be merry, a fundamental part of the fabric of social life in Spain. “Pinchos” line every bar in town, but knowing where to find the best ones is an art that needs local knowledge. Without a passionate foodie local with you, you would choose bars at random and pointed to what you would see on the counter, but often the “specials” aren’t on display.
In Santander, Spanish “Tapas” are served in the form of “Pinchos”. Do you know the difference between “Pinchos” & “Tapas”? They are both part of Spanish small food culture and while “Tapas” are small portions of food to share, “Pinchos” are bite-size food masterpieces often served on a slice of bread and have a cocktail stick in them, a delicious Spanish version of finger food.
The cherry on the cake to an unforgettable day in this stunning city is a visit to the cultural exhibition Botín Centre, an architectural masterpiece overlooking Santander's Bay where you can enjoy spectacular views over the city.
After that we will explore Santander by foot, by boat, or we will just simply relax on an unspoilt beach before retiring to your luxury hotel, that's your choice.
The Grand Hotel Sardinero is located on the beachfront, commanding breath-taking views of Sardinero beach and the Cantabrian Sea. This chic hotel oozes stylish sophistication, bathing you in opulent, contemporary luxury making it the perfect base from which to explore this stunning city.
