Guatemala is a small country (the size of Ohio) in the Central America region. It has borders to Mexico in the north/northwest, to Belize in the northeast, to Honduras in the southeast, to El Salvador in the south. It has a Pacific coastline to the southwest, and a tiny piece of Caribbean coastline to the east.
Guatemala has a rich and distinctive culture from the long mix of elements from Spain and the native Maya people. This diverse history and the natural beauty of the land have created a destination rich in interesting and scenic sites. The climate in the Central and Western Highlands is generally mild. It can get cool at night even in the summers.
In its territory there are fascinating Mayan archaeological sites (Tikal in the Peten, Quiriguá in Izabal, Iximche in Tecpan Chimaltenango and Guatemala City). Natural attractions include locations such as Lake Atitlan and Semuc Champey. Historical tourism includes the colonial city of Antigua Guatemala, which is recognized as a UNESCO Cultural Heritage site.
There is a strong interest within the international community for archaeological sites like the city of Tikal. To note, Tikal was built and inhabited in a period where the culture had its greatest literary and artistic expression, and was ruled by a dynasty of 16 kings. The Maya of Tikal built many temples, a ball park, altars and stelae in high and low relief.
Guatemala is visited for its archaeological sites, pre-Hispanic cities as well as tourist-religious centers like the Basilica of Esquipulas in the city of Esquipulas, and the beaches on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of Guatemala. Other tourist destinations are the national parks and other protected areas such as the Maya Biosphere Reserve.

Stunning Guatemala Part 1
This video shows what a beautiful country is Guatemala. We spent 2 weeks between the main Guatemala City surroundings and the region of Izabal. Near Guatemala City we went first to Chichicastenango, then we travelled to Panajachel, Sololá, spent the night nearby Lake Atitlan and the following morning we went to visit San Juan, San Pedro La Laguna and Santiago (three traditional villages that can only be reached by boat).
After Lake Atitlan we headed to Antigua Guatemala and we spent the night there. The following morning we headed to the Eastern Izabal region. Our main location was Puerto Barrios for the following week which was the starting point to visit Rio Dulce, Livingston and Cayos de Belize. In Puerto Barrios there is a great resort called Amatique Bay where you can spend the day having lunch and using the resort facilities, and another place hidden in the jungle is called Rio Las Escobas which is a river of cold and clear water running in the middle of the forest. It is worth a visit. As you can see even if Guatemala is a developing Country it is full of amazing places with a strong and deep rooted culture. Its people are always nice and friendly and they will always make you feel welcome. It´s like you are having a journey in the past where traditions and culture have not been contaminated by the modern days. I hope you enjoy this video and give it a thumb up if you like it. Peten Departement Travel Video - Petén, region of northern Guatemala, bounded by Mexico to the north and west and by Belize to the east. It constitutes more than one-third of the countrys territory. Petén is a low limestone plateau, varying in elevation between 500 and 700 feet (150 and 210 metres) above sea level at the base of the Yucatán Peninsula. Except for areas of savanna vegetation, the region is covered by dense tropical rainforests. Few rivers penetrate Petén, for most of the heavy rainfall is drained underground.
Because of difficult terrain, Petén long has avoided European-style plantations and settlements. Ruins of many Mayan cities, most notably Tikal and Uaxactún, indicate that despite difficult geographical circumstances, the Maya adapted to the region and even flourished. Their great cities were abandoned in the 10th century, only to be recolonized by the Itzá Maya from Mexico, who resisted Spanish subjugation until 1697. In 2005 scientists confirmed that the ancient Maya capital of La Corona in Petén was Site Q (the letter represents the Spanish word que, which), a long-sought location believed to be the provenance of a number of looted Mayan monuments that were sold on the antiquities market in the second half of the 20th century.
