Exploring Puffin and Scarriff Islands, County Kerry, Ireland
MountainViews expedition to climb two offshore summits on Puffin Island and Scarriff Island in Ireland's Co. Kerry. Many thanks to BirdWatch Ireland for permission to land on Puffin Island, which is a nature reserve. We enjoyed seeing hundreds of Atlantic Puffin, some Manx Shearwater and hearing a Storm Petrel hidden in a wall crevice. And we climbed 2 summits unrecorded as surmounted on MountainViews.ie!!
The best island in all of Ireland?
Well this is it, the final paddle, and we went out on a high, and what a high. I first paddled with Matt in 2011, and we've done some amazing, memorable paddles together, and shared with others also. This little gem, lying just off the Donegal coast, is up there with any of the paddles we've done. In fact, as an easy day paddle, it is just about as perfect as one could hope for. We drove down the lane through the Golf Club on Cruitch Island, to check the sea state, and decided to have the day there, as time was already marching on, and it just looked perfectly inviting, and here are the results.

13 Ireland Ring of Kerry and Ross Castle
The Ring of Kerry is a 111 mile scenic tourist route in County Kerry, south western Ireland. Clockwise from Kilarney, it follows the N71 to Kenmare, then the N70 around the Iveragh Peninsula to Killorglin passing through Sneem, Waterville, Cahersiveen, and Glenbeigh before returning to Killarney via the N72. Basically, it's a trip around the island's southwestern tip.
Unique to Kilarney, is the horse drawn jaunting car ride through the National Park to ancient Ross Castle. Ross Castle is a 15th century tower house and keep on the edge of Lough Leane in Killarney National Park. We have pictures of Ross Castle and some from across the lake.
As we were driven through Ireland, we came across a statue of that fabled goat, King Puck. The annual Puck Fair is reputed to be one of Ireland's oldest fairs. It takes place annually for three days beginning on the 10th of August. The first day of Puck Fair is Gathering Day, where the goat is enthroned on a stand in the town square and the great horse fair is held.
Driving through Cahersiveen, we came across the Statue for the Monks. We also stopped by the Charlie Chaplin statue in Waterville on the Atlantic Ocean. From there we went on to the Scarriff Inn with Ireland's Best Known View (Fog Permitting) from Vista Bar . It was a beautiful day with no fog and we had a nice lunch while enjoying a very fine view.

Féile na Bealtaine (Mar/Apr/May) arts festival brings exhibitions, concerts, street theatre and events to town. Dingle Races (Aug) is a horse racing event held at Ballintaggart. Local cuisine is offered at Dingle Food Festival (Sep/Oct), with a taste trail, street entertainments and music.
