Un breve scorcio del passo Giau in un pomeriggio estivo.
Il Passo di Giau o, più comunemente, passo Giau (2.236 m) è un valico alpino situato nelle Dolomiti, in provincia di Belluno. Mette in comunicazione Cortina d'Ampezzo e la val Boite con Selva di Cadore e tutta la Val Fiorentina.
È situato al centro di un vasto alpeggio, ai piedi del Nuvolau (2.574 m) e dell'Averau. Rappresenta un'interessante alternativa al Passo di Falzarego per arrivare a Cortina dalla zona dell'agordino, poiché è una zona molto panoramica, da cui si scorgono numerose vette (Marmolada, Tofane, Cristallo, Sorapiss, Croda da Lago, Lastoni di Formin, Cadini di Misurina, ecc.)
Si tratta di uno dei passi leggendari del Giro d'Italia, soprattutto dal versante di Colle Santa Lucia, per la sua durezza (misura 10,1 km con una pendenza media del 9,1%) e la sua costanza, mentre il versante ampezzano è più breve (8,6 km) e leggermente più facile (8,3% di pendenza media) anche se rimane molto impegnativo in quanto la pendenza media è falsata da alcuni facili tratti iniziali, mentre nella parte centrale e finale è molto dura e costante.
Al Giro d'Italia è stato Cima Coppi, cioè la cima più alta scalata dal Giro in quell'edizione, nel 1973, quando vi transitò per primo lo scalatore spagnolo José Manuel Fuente, e nel 2011, quando scollinò per primo in vetta Stefano Garzelli.
Alcune scene del film Ladyhawke sono state girate presso Passo Giau.
Alla sommità del passo è visibile ancor oggi il cippo confinario fra l'allora Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia e l'Impero d'Austria, oggi confine comunale fra San Vito di Cadore e Colle Santa Lucia.

A brief glimpse of the Giau pass on a summer afternoon.
The Passo di Giau or, more commonly, Giau Pass (2,236 m) is a mountain located in the Dolomites, in the province of Belluno. Connects Cortina d'Ampezzo and Val Boite with Selva di Cadore and the Val Fiorentina.
It is located at the center of a vast mountain pastures at the foot of Nuvolau (2,574 m) and dell'Averau. It offers an attractive alternative to the Falzarego Pass to get to Cortina from the area Agordino, because it is a very scenic area, where you can see numerous peaks (Marmolada, Tofane, Crystal, Sorapiss, Croda da Lago, Lastoni Formin, Cadini Misurina, etc.).
It is one of the legendary passes of the Tour of Italy, especially from the slope of Colle Saint Lucia, for its hardness (measuring 10.1 kilometers with an average gradient of 9.1%) and its constancy, while the slope Ampezzo is shorter (8.6 km) and slightly easier (8.3% average), although it remains very challenging as the average slope is distorted by some easy initial lines, while in the central and finish is very hard and constant.

At the top of the pass is visible even today the boundary stone between the then Republic of Venice and the Austrian Empire, today's municipal boundary between San Vito di Cadore and Colle Saint Lucia.
