Seneca Rocks is an unincorporated community located in Pendleton County, West Virginia, United States. The community of Seneca Rocks — formerly known as Mouth of Seneca — lies at the junction of US 33, WV 28 and WV 55 near the confluence of Seneca Creek and the North Fork South Branch Potomac River. The community also lies near Seneca Rocks, the crag from which it takes its name. Both lie within the Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area of the Monongahela National Forest. Coopers Rock State Forest, West Virginia

Beautiful 12,000 acre Coopers Rock State Forest outside of Morgantown, WV straddles Preston and Monongalia Counties. Coopers Rock is an incredible place to mountain bike ride, rock climb, hike, look at scenic overlooks, hunt, fish, camp, and picnic and play. The north side of the park (north of I68) also includes Chestnut Ridge Park which has ponds for kids to swim, paddle boat, and fish in. The park also has camping, music shows, and playgrounds. Interesting Places in West Virginia (1989)

Another classic day odyssey (sort of) from yer' favorite (I hope) bullfrog! The Cass Scenic RR Fall Photo Special would run the next day.

We first head for Spruce Knob Lake (great for boating and camping) before searching for a cave known as the Sinks of Gandy; so named because Gandy Creek flows through it. It passes beneath Yocum Knob then emerges on the knob's opposite side. We couldn't locate the entrance-but we were unknowingly directly over the cave itself!

If anyone knows how to reach the Sinks from there, please comment. I believe we walk down that dirt driveway I show but I'm not sure.

Then on to West Virginia's highest point-Spruce Knob itself. We'll walk the Whispering Spruce Trail-and see an interesting phenomenon along the way. A GREAT place for a day trip! Just beware of those dusty roads!!

After that-you'll see our drive to good 'ol Seneca Rocks. Another phenomenon-I hardly narrate!! Forgive my lack of narration! HEY-wait a doggone minute! Other YouTubers don't narrate either! And I'm asking to be forgiven?? What the...

After dusting off our car at the rocks-we then grab a Coke at the vending machine.

Then-just as in our October 2013 day odyssey-we head west on US 33 to Bowden Cave, though I didn't know at the time that was it. We'll also see a cool view of Kelly Mountain.

Last-but not least-a look at CSX's last days at Elkins. That portion was actually uploaded by me a few years back-but here it is again 'case you ain't seen it. I dig those pre-GEVO days-don't you? This could very well have been the LAST day of CSX in Elkins!!

Dolly Sods is a 4,000-foot high plains plateau in the Monongahela National Forest. Here blueberries and huckleberries can be picked and where mountain laurel and other flora bloom. Hike or ride horses along the trails near West Virginia's highest point, Spruce Knob. From its observation tower at 4,863feet, there are great views.

Walk the moderate Seneca Rocks Trail up to the summit for amazing scenery atop the 900foot rock formation overlooking the confluence of Seneca Creek and the North Fork South Branch Potomac River. The Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area offers world-class climbing, mountain biking and hiking. Or for a more relaxed pass-time, there's fishing for bass or trout at one of the state's many fishing hot spots: Williams River, Cranberry River, Cherry River, Cheat River, Birch River and Beech Fork Lake.

West Virginia is convenient to reach from Washington Dulles Airport, being just over one hour's drive to its eastern panhandle where Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is located, the heart of civil war history in this state, when back in1863, West Virginia became the 35th State in the Union, the only state born out of the Civil War and today celebrates its culture, beauty and independence.

Backpacking Spruce Knob and Seneca Creek Backcountry, West Virginia

I recently completed an overnight solo backpacking trek through the Seneca Creek Backcountry area located on Spruce Mountain in the Monongahela National Forest, Pendleton County, West Virginia. The hike begins near the summit of Spruce Knob, West Virginia's highest point, and follows along the ridge for several miles before descending the west slope of the mountain to Seneca Creek. I then hiked along the creek for a few miles until reaching the Upper Falls of Seneca, sometimes called the High Falls of Seneca (there is another Seneca Falls further downstream). After eating lunch and taking a break at the falls, it was time to head back up the mountain, passing through the beautiful High Meadows area and checking out the crash site of a small aircraft. I then stopped for dinner and then looked for a good camp site for the night. On the morning of Day 2, I continued the hike along the ridge of the mountain back to the trail head at the summit.
