An historic town in Macedonia that knows how to have a good time
Welcome to Serres – the town in Northern Greece that’s seen it all and has risen like a phoenix from the ashes of every catastrophe it’s ever faced. What’s its secret? You’ll discover it in the enchanting Lailia Forest, in the shade from the leafy trees at Agii Anargyri. You’ll taste it in its famous sweets and in the scent of its ouzos. You’ll recognise it in its people, who fill the nights with fun and games, and in its women who are renowned for their beauty. You’ll find that Serres will keep its promise to give you a holiday to remember.
What to do in Serres
Travel to the valley of Agii Anargyri
This lovely park infuses Serres with colour and fresh air. With cascades, brooks, spreading plane trees, an artificial lake, restaurants and cafes, it’s a perfect holiday destination for walks and picnics, especially in spring and summer.
Koulas Hill
This pine-covered hill overlooking town is not just an attractive backdrop, it contains the ruins of a once mighty Byzantine acropolis. Climb up to admire the view and you’ll also see the western tower of the fortress, Orestes’ tower, which was part of the inner wall. An inscribed foundation stone dates it to 1350, during the reign of the Serbian king Stefan Dusan.
The pristine beauty of Lailia
Go just 25km north of Serres and you’ll find yourself in the Lailia Forest, 330 hectares of pine and beech forest at an altitude of 1,849m above sea level at its highest peak, which has the unusual name of Ali Baba. The forest is a genuine paradise, home to 514 types of flora. It has been declared a Natural Monument and a region of particular Natural Beauty. Enough said. Go to this corner of Macedonia and see for yourself.
Skiing or après-ski?
If you want to ski, the Serres centre’s the place to go for great slopes and even greater fun afterwards. In its bars, clubs, cafes, restaurants, ouzeris and the famous souvlaki stands, you’ll feel the pulse and join the locals in having a good time.
In the lap of the speed gods
Step on the gas and head for the Serres racecourse, the best in Greece and the Balkans. The course meets international standards and can host Formula 3000 events. International rallies take place here and, for a small fee, anyone can test their skills in their own cars or motorbikes.
Bar Hopping in Serres
Serres is serious about partying and you’ll understand why once you spend some time with the outgoing locals of this town. Bars, clubs, cafes, restaurants, ouzeries and the well-known souvlaki joints strategically situated on downtown street corners… This is where you’ll feel the pulse of the town’s vibrant social life.
The sweets of Serres
Dusted with sugar, they look like Turkish delight, but they’re quite different. They’re called akanes and what sets them apart is fresh goat butter and spring water from Lailia. For the real thing, there are a number of traditional confectionary stores in Serres that will have you drooling in no time.
The Timios Prodromos monastery
This historic monastery lies 10km northeast of Serres in a ravine on Mt Menikios. The most noteworthy attraction in the district, it was built in the 13th century.

Visit Macedonia - Serres Prefecture.
Visit Macedonia - Serres Prefecture
The prefecture of Serres is one of the 13 prefectures of Macedonia, the largest province of Greece in size and wealth. The prefecture stretches from Strymonikos bay in the south, to the Greek-Bulgarian border to the north. It borders with the Prefectures of Drama and Kavala in the east and the prefectures of Thessaloniki and Kilkis in the west. It is one of the flattest Prefectures in Greece, considering that 48% of its total stretching is described as semi-flat mountainous, and is surrounded by the mountains of Kerkini- Vertiskos- Kerdylia in the West and Orvilos- Menikio- Paggeo in the the east. The Strymon river, starting in Bulgaria and ending into the Strymonikos bay (Orphanos bay as it was called in the past), flows north- south through the prefecture. Its main tributary is Aggitis, in the Eastern part of the Prefecture. The total population of the prefecture, according to the 1981 census, was 196,247 people, 2% of the population of Greece.

Serres Prefecture
Stretching from the Strymonikos bay to the Bulgarian border, the Prefecture of Serres is Greece's treasured possession. The destination combines the beauty of nature, the peaceful life of province and the cultural tradition in a way like no other. Surrounded by mountains and known as the flattest area in Greece, the region owes the fertility and beauty of its inland areas to the old waters of the river Strymonas. Northwest of the flat area lies the artificial lake Kerkini, constructed to dam the Strymon River and harness its energy.
The region of Serres offers the opportunity to discover, beyond the authenticity of provincial life, the hospitality, the local cultural heritage, and the historical monuments. A must do experience is touring the villages. To see traditional fire dancing head to Agia Eleni, for magnificent caves and impressive canyons as well as archeological remains of the ancient cities visit Alistrati and Amfipoli.

Macedonia today is a geographical region of Greece, and the largest of the Greek territory.
It constitutes most of the geographic and historical region of ancient Macedon, a Greek kingdom ruled by the Argeads whose most celebrated members were Alexander the Great and his father Philip II.
In 336 B.C., Alexander the Great became the leader of the Greek kingdom of Macedonia. By the time he died 13 years later, Alexander had built an empire that stretched from Greece all the way to India. That brief but thorough empire-building campaign changed the world: It spread Greek ideas and culture from the Eastern Mediterranean to Asia. Historians call this era the Hellenistic period.
The name Macedonia was later applied to identify various administrative areas in the Roman and Byzantine Empires with widely differing borders.
Athens Central food market - The liveliest and most colorful market to visit
Just a 15-minute walk from your AthensFlat vacation rental is the Athens’ Central Food Market. The central market is a great place to experience the true spirit of the city. It is one of the liveliest and most colorful markets to visit. Of course, there are many smells and sights that are not for everybody’s taste, but it is an amazing place, surprisingly clean with a huge choice of meat, fish, vegetables, fruits and spices. On their own Facebook, it says, “Food Market: The most complete experience of enjoyment for those who are passionate about the taste.”
In addition to the center of the market, there are some vendors who also sell household items, dry good, dried herbs, and nuts. When you go to the market, make sure to wear shoes as the floor may be a bit slippery, especially in the fish market. Just like in every food market, there is an odd smell. Be prepared for this and other crude things that could affect the experience of the wonderful colors and taste. (Meat market is not recommended for vegans and vegetarians).
Right next to the Market is Stelio’s Taverna. It is One of the most authentic taverns in Athens. Great quality food and extra special service. They know how to take care of customers. Another tavern to visit is Diporto. Diporto is a basement-level taverna (koutouki in Greek) located at the corner of Sokratous and Theatrou Streets in the district of Athens Central Market. Even though the 150 years old building that houses the taverna, which is as building, has two staircases, leading to either street, you would never guess the world of wonders that awaits you at its basement.
Once you have visited the Central Market, come home and try to make your own Greek dish. Open Mon – Sat 07:00 - 18:00

Frankfurt Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia (4K)
For centuries, Frankfurt has been one of Europe’s most important trading capitals.
Today, Frankfurt is home to the European Central Bank, the German Stock Exchange and an airport, which handles almost 60 million travelers a year.
Despite its stature as a financial giant, Frankfurt remains surprisingly compact. Most of its attractions are clustered close to the city centre, making the city perfect for exploring on foot or by bicycle.
Cross the Eiserner Steg into Frankfurt’s ancient heart, the Römerberg. After being devastated by allied bombs in World War Two, many of the square’s most important buildings have been lovingly restored. From the Römerplatz, head deeper into the old city to discover important buildings such as Paulskirche and Goethe-Haus.
In the eighteenth century the city’s elite built villas across the river from the old town. Today, many of these villas house specialist museums, such as the German Film Museum, the German Architecture Museum and the Stadel Museum.
Just behind the museum embankment, lose yourself in Old Sachsenhausen, where you’ll find narrow lanes lined with traditional houses and some of the city’s best ebbelwei pubs.
Once you’ve replenished your energy, hop on a tram to the city’s northwest and spend a few hours at the Frankfurt Botanical Gardens and Palmengarten. 70 years ago, as the city smoldered from war, few could have imagined that these greenhouses would ever again see such beauty, that this city would ever again experience such peace and prosperity.
