Kerman province (استان كرمان)
Shahdad desert (نمكزار شهداد)
Dasht-e Lut (Emptiness Desert دشت لوت) also known as Shahdad desert نمكزار شهداد, is a large salt desert in southeastern Kerman, Iran and is the world's 25th largest desert.
The surface of the sand there has been measured at temperatures as high as 70.7°C (159°F) and it is one of the world's driest and hottest places.
Measurements of MODIS (Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) installed on NASA's satellite Aqua from 2003 to 2010 testify that the hottest land surface on Earth is located in Dasht-e Lut and land surface temperatures reach here 70.7 °C (159.3 °F), though the air temperature is cooler. Precision of measurements is 0.5 K to 1 K.
The hottest part of Dasht-e Lut is Gandom Beryan گندم بريان, a large plateau covered in dark lava, approximately 480 square kilometers (190 sq mi) in area. According to a local legend, the name (in translation from Persian Toasted wheat گندم بريان) originates from an accident where a load of wheat was left in the desert which was then scorched by the heat in a few days.

King David, King Herod, Jesus, and John the Baptist were closely linked with the Dead Sea and its
surroundings. The prophets knew it via the infamous Sodom and Gomorra. During the Egyptian
it is said that Queen Cleopatra obtained exclusive rights to build cosmetic and pharmaceutical
in the area. Later on, the wily Nabateans discovered the value of bitumen extracted from the Dead Sea
and needed by the Egyptians for embalming their mummies. Aristotle wrote about the remarkable waters.
In Roman times the Essenes settled in Qumran on the Dead Sea's northern shore as a place o
and on the heights of Masada a small group of rebellious Jewish zealots held out against the might of
the Roman Legion. The remoteness of the region attracted Greek Orthodox monks since the Byzantine
era. Their monasteries such as Saint George in Wadi Kelt and Mar Saba in the Judean Desert are places
of pilgrimage. Bedouin tribes have continuously lived in the area and more recently explorers and
scientists arrived to analyze the minerals and conduct research into the unique climate. Since the 1960's,
tourists from all the world have also explored the Dead Sea region.
