In May 2011 Bankwatch visited the town of Shakhtinsk in the Karaganda region of Kazakhstan to speak with miners about the working conditions at different ArcerlorMittal-owned mines in the region. Shakhtinsk was the site of two mining accidents in 2008 that left 35 people dead.
