Meet the World's Tallest Windmills in Schiedam, Holland
Schiedam lies to the west of Rotterdam,The Netherlands. It has a small yet charming 18th century town center, looking like a pocket-size Amsterdam. At the western edge of Schiedam's old center, lined up along the former outer canal, stand the world's six tallest windmills.
Their location explains their height. When the windmills were built, between 1770 and 1803, they stood in what was then the edge of town and the industrial area. They were built for the grinding of grain needed for the distillation of gin, then Schiedam's main industry. To catch as much wind as possible, they were made to stand high above the city, which came to lie at their feet. Filmed by John Valk. Textsource:

Take a day trip from Amsterdam to visit polders, the Ijsselmeer, and a village known as the Venice of the North.
Your day begins with a 1-hour drive to Enkhuizen, a quaint 17th century port town on the shores of the former Zuiderzee, now known as the IJsselmeer.
Take a short stroll in Enkhuizen to get an impression of the old town before crossing the IJsselmeer on a 20-kilometer-long dike. You’ll continue on through the reclaimed land, known as polders, passing the new town of Lelystad, the capital of Flevoland.
The highlight of the full-day tour is a visit to the village of Giethoorn. It is known as the Venice of the North as canals serve as the streets of the village, and access is by boat only. You’ll enjoy a 1-hour boat ride through this lovely village, admiring the beautifully restored farm houses along the canals.
There will also be some time to wander around Giethoorn on your own, or to take a break in one of the many cafés. On the way back to Amsterdam, you’ll pass through the scenic landscapes of the Flevoland region. You will have an amazing time and experience!

A city and former municipality in the Netherlands, the city was first referenced in books in 953. Now it's a small lovely town in the outskirts of Amsterdam (50mins away by bike) with one of the loveliest castles in Holland, surrounded by a moat, and a harbour packed with little cafes and some superb food. A great way to spend a sunny afternoon. On the way back to town, don't forget to bike through Haveneiland, a new modern neighbourhood development.
