Solitaire is a small settlement in the Khomas Region of central Namibia near the Namib-Naukluft National Park. It currently features the only gasoline station, bakery, cafe, and the only general dealer between the dunes at Sossusvlei and the coast at Walvis Bay, as well as to the capital Windhoek. Solitaire belongs to the Windhoek Rural electoral constituency.Solitaire is known in The Netherlands because of the book of the same name by Dutch author Ton van der Lee dealing with his stay in this place.

Sesriem is a small settlement located in the Namib Desert, in Namibia, close to the southern end of the Naukluft Mountains. It is especially known because the Sesriem gate is the main access point to the Namib-Naukluft National Park for visitors entering the park to visit the nearby tourist attraction of Sossusvlei. As many settlements in the Namib, Sesriem is essentially a filling station with basic services such as public telephones and a couple of small kiosks where travellers can get general supplies such as food and water. In the surroundings of Sesriem there are several accommodations, such as a few lodges and 24 campsites.By the Sesriem gate, hot air balloons depart in the early morning, providing scenic flights over the Sossusvlei dunes.

Sossusvlei is a salt and clay pan surrounded by high red dunes, located in the southern part of the Namib Desert, in the Namib-Naukluft National Park of Namibia. The name Sossusvlei is often used in an extended meaning to refer to the surrounding area , which is one of the major visitor attractions of Namibia.The name Sossusvlei is of mixed origin and roughly means dead-end marsh. The Namib-Naukluft Park is a national park of Namibia encompassing part of the Namib Desert and the Naukluft mountain range. With an overall area of 49,768 km2 , the Namib-Naukluft is the largest game park in Africa and the fourth largest in the world. The most well-known area of the park is Sossusvlei, which is the main visitor attraction in Namibia. A surprising collection of creatures survives in the hyper-arid region, including snakes, geckos, unusual insects, hyenas, gemsboks and jackals. Namibia road trip day 11 driving from Sossusvlei to Solitaire to eat apple pie in the Namib desert

Solitaire in Namibia was once just a lonely farm fuel station in the middle of the Namib desert, a convenient place for the growing Namibia tourist market to fill up with petrol on their way to Sossuvlei and Sesriem canyon. But now Solitaire is so much more.

The apple pie at Solitaire is somewhat famous so make sure you call in if your are driving on the Solitaire road, probably on your way to Sossuvlei and the red sand dunes, maybe to camp at Sesriem.

In this video we will start at Sesriem camp, at the entrance to Sossusvlei by packing up camp and checking in after arriving late the night before after reception had closed. (For more about Sossusvlei you should check out my vlog Namibia Day 10 ).

After packing up our roof tent we head out on the road to Solitaire in search of lunch and in particular the famous apple pie (or apple crumble) at Moose's bakery in Solitaire.

Together we will discover something about Solitaire history and how Solitaire has grown to become such an iconic place to visit in Namibia, and also get an insight into the Damara language...if you have never heard one of the African click languages then you should watch this video just to hear it!

Namibia roadtrip day 10: road to Sossusvlei watch the sunrise over the sand dunes and visit dune 45

Travel with Simon on my Namibia road trip as we head out into the sand dunes at Sossuvlei to see the biggest dunes on earth. See how not to avoid getting stuck in the sand! On the way back to camp at Sesriem we will stop for breakfast at Dune 45.

On day 10 of our Namibia roadtrip we are heading out into the sand dunes at Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert to watch the sunrise.

The Sossusvlei road from the the campsite at Sesriem is through thick sand, if you don't want to get stuck then park your car at the 2x4 car park and take the shuttle. It's cheap and runs about every 15 minutes in open safari vehicles with super flat tyres.

There are a number of dunes you can visit on the way back including Dune 45 (Big Daddy) which is possibly the most photographed individual dune and great for sunset (for viewing the sunset itself rather than the sun setting over the dunes). Another famous dune worth a visit is Dune 5 or Elim Dune.

Sossusvlei forms part of the Namib Naukluft park, but don't get confused, the Namib Naukluft is a very large park and to see the red sand dunes at Sossusvlei or to see Deadvlei you must enter through the park gate at Sesriem. The camp ground known as Namib Naukluft is some 100km away in a different section of the park entirely.

Spitzkoppe in Namibia: the Best Camping Ever

Thinking of going to Spitzkoppe in Namibia? Want to do a self drive camping trip (4x4 camping, to be precise)? Perfect, you're on the right track and we recommend you go for it.

It is as epic as you'd imagine. Amazing camping, climbing, - the campsites are spacious, and the stargazing is absolutely the best we've ever seen in our entire lives. We think we'll have to go back for that reason alone.

Make sure you book slightly in advance, and you'll want to show up around noon if you want your pick of the campsites, because people start driving in around 3-4 to set up their tents or rooftop camp tents to catch the sunset and have dinner.

Affordability: definitely. All of the campsites were priced at $12 when we visited in February of 2019.

Food: You'll want to bring your own. There is a little restaurant at the entrance, but people we talked to recommended against it. Besides, you're camping, so bring a little stove, gas burner, and grill up some meat.

Hygiene: they have pretty great showers, sinks, toilets at the entrance that we used.

The large 30.000-hectare conservation area just outside of the impressive Etosha National Park offers all a wildlife fan could hope for and is a perfect western starting point for tours through the NP. We saw rhinos and lions, girafes, elephants and hundreds of zebras crossing the Etosha pan.

00:09 Independence Memorial Museum, Windhoek
Since march 2014, the museum is open to the public. Namibia has a long colonial history that is displayed in this extraordinary building. Locals call it simply the coffee machine. The view from the top is one of the best in the city.

Want to mingle with the locals and try some excellent and hot barbecue dishes? This is the place to be. You can even play pool at this buzzing market.

00:13 Tatekulu Barbershop, Windhoek
Windhoek isn’t your typical capital. It’s very spread out and quite relaxed. The Independence Avenue is the lifeline of the city, with more and more hip bars and businesses popping up. One of it: this brilliant little barbershop of Leander, the friendly owner of the great tour operator NatureFriend Safaris.

Being in Swakopmund, you have to do a trip to Walvis Bay! Trips of numerous operators take you to Pelican Point, where you can see flamingos, the famous lighthouse and of course: seals! It was the cutest kayaking trip we’ve ever done. (Never thought we’d ever use the word „cute“ in that context.)

The highest point rises about 1,784 metres. We loved filming there, as basically everything you get on camera looks stunning.

00:22 Solitaire, Khomas
It’s basically a petrol station with a quirky and very instagrammy car cemetery. „Please fill up“ should be your first three words there.

00:24 Vogelfederberg, Namib Naukluft Park
With 3.2 people per square kilometre, Namibia is VERY empty.

00:28/00:30 Onguma Game Reserve
Onguma is your eastern starting point to drive through Etosha NP that’s literally stuffed with animals. We had a waterhole directly in front of our lodge The Fort, and could watch kudus and zebras go for a drink at night.

00:37/01:02 Okonjima Game Reserve
Leopard and cheetah buffs: this is your place! It’s almost a certainty to come across some of those beautiful animals, in part because of the tracking devices. It started off as a conservation centre – that’s why.

00:40 Sossusvlei
The salt and clay pan (translated „dead-end marsh“), surrounded by high red dunes has been one of our favourite places. The sunrises and sunsets are magical there.

We had a blast with Paul from Travel Uncharted who took us on a crazy offroad tour. We are glad we survived it - and would love to do it again.

It’s at the 45th kilometre of the road that connects the Sesriem gate and Sossusvlei – hence the name.

They call it the adventure capital. The tours to the nearby dunes of Sandwich Harbour are brilliant. Arne flipped over with his quad bike and got sandy like never before when sandboarding, but – we enjoyed it! Loads!

Cool name for the probably highest dune in the world (around 350 metres). Make sure you start climbing it early in the morning.

About 1km long and about 30 metres deep, this canyon is the second most important tourist attraction in the area after Sossusvlei. We liked the nice cool climate down there.

Namibia: Oldest Desert on Earth

I got to explore some of Namibia, home to the oldest desert in the world, during a recent road trip and photo shoot with DoucheBags. We mostly explored the popular destinations of Luderitz, kolmanskop ghost town, Sossusvlei as well as the coastal towns of Walvis bay and Smakopmund and scored some surf at Skeleton bay, Insane sand boarding and even some wakeboarding behind one of the cars. Such an insane road trip with an awesome crew of people from all over the world!

Namibia Part11: From Swakopmund to Sossusvlei/Deadvlei/Sesriem Canyon/Homestead Lodge

Day 15+16 of our Safari: From Swakopmund we drive southward. Flamingo Colonies, Kuiseb-Pass, lunch break in Solitaire, Namib Naukluft Nationalpark until we reach our destination: The Homestead Lodge. Romanic place in the middle of the desert.
Next mornig we visit Sossuvlei, dune Nr. 45, Deadvlei, dune Big Daddy and the Sesriem Canyon.
Next morning we return to Windhuk - time to say good bye to Namibia.
