Worthing is a large seaside town in England, with borough status in West Sussex. Worthing is situated at the foot of the South Downs, 10 miles west of Brighton, and 18 miles east of the county town of Chichester. Modern Worthing has a large service industry, particularly in financial services. It has three theatres and one of Britain's oldest cinemas. Writers Oscar Wilde and Harold Pinter lived and worked in the town.
The area around Worthing has been populated for at least 6,000 years and contains Britain's greatest concentration of Stone Age flint mines, which are some of the earliest mines in Europe. Lying within the borough, the Iron Age hill fort of Cissbury Ring is one of Britain's largest. Worthing means (place of) Worth/Worō's people, from the Old English personal name Worth/Worō (the name means valiant one, one who is noble), and -ingas people of (reduced to -ing in the modern name). For many centuries Worthing was a small mackerel fishing hamlet until in the late 18th century it developed into an elegant Georgian seaside resort and attracted the well-known and wealthy of the day. In the 19th and 20th centuries the area was one of Britain's chief market gardening centres.
Worthing is situated on the West Sussex coast in South East England, 49 miles (79 km) south of London and 10 miles (16 km) west of Brighton and Hove. It forms part of the Brighton/Worthing/Littlehampton conurbation along with neighbouring towns and villages in the county such as Littlehampton, Findon, Sompting, Lancing, Shoreham-by-Sea and Southwick.
A turnpike was opened in 1803 to connect Worthing with London, and similar toll roads were built later in the 19th century to connect nearby villages. Stagecoach traffic grew rapidly until 1845, when the opening of a railway line from Brighton brought about an immediate decline. The former turnpike is now the A24, a primary route which runs northwards to London via Horsham. Two east–west routes run through the borough: the A27 trunk road runs to Brighton, Chichester and Portsmouth, and the A259 follows a coastal route between Hampshire and Kent. Shoreham Airport is about 5 miles (8 km) east of Worthing. The nearest international airport is London Gatwick, about 28 miles (45 km) to the northeast.

The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, Bampton In The Cotswolds And Downton Abbey Filming Location
The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, Bampton, Oxfordshire, is a Church of England parish church in the Diocese of Oxford that dates from the 12th century. It is on the site of a late Saxon Minster, the tower of which survives in the present church. It has a 13th-century spire, and a carved stone reredos of Christ and his Apostles from about 1400. It is a Grade I listed building.
Saint Beornwald of Bampton was venerated as patron saint of Bampton from at least the 9th century until the Reformation. His feast day was 21 December. Given the degree of local patronage he may have been the founder of the church. Very little is known about Beornwald. Although early records call him saint, confessor, priest and martyr, even his tomb is now lost for certain. His shrine was probably in the north transept of the parish church, where some evidence of a former shrine remains.
William the Conqueror granted the original church to Leofric, Bishop of Exeter. The Diocese of Exeter was involved with St Mary's for many years afterwards. The church has been rebuilt and extended a number times, most recently in 1870 when the roof was given its present form.
The ancient parish was one of the largest in Oxfordshire, and included the townships of Weald, Lew, Aston, Cote, Shifford, Chimney and Lower Haddon. In 1857 the parish was split into the three ecclesiastical parishes of Bampton Proper, Bampton Lew and Bampton Aston, all now part of the united benefice of Bampton with Clanfield. In 1866 the parish was split into five civil parishes: Bampton, Lew, Aston and Cote, Shifford and Chimney.
St Mary's Rectory has a date-stone stating that it was built in 1546. It was altered in 1799 by the builder and architect Daniel Harris.
On 12 September 1955, St Mary's Church was designated as a Grade I listed building.[10]
Many scenes, including some of Downton Abbey's key events, have been filmed in and around the church in Bampton.

The Church of England parish church of St John the Baptist, Stadhampton: In October 2013, St John the Baptist, Stadhampton reopened as the church and village hall following a major internal reordering; the building is now being used for a wide range of
activities .
Stadhampton which is a village of about 800 people had not
had a community hall since the 1960s. The local council required a guarantee before investing in the church redevelopment that the church could not be sold off if ever the COE decided to make it redundant. The redevelopment cost £500,000 and was funded by local & county councils.
The impression you get entering the refurbished church now is stunning you see a gleaming open space with a kitchen/servery corner and a thoroughly modern restroom. The chancel is retained as the religious part. Chairs can quickly be arranged for a church service or a secular meeting. I can see bookings for the W.I., Ramblers, lots of private functions, cinema club etc. The church is equipped with a digital projector and wifi and essentially underfloor-heating.

I only went to visit the church because of the unusual pinnacles on the corner of the Church Tower. But this seems to me an ideal way to get investment into a Church and both retain its religious function and be used much more often and also have all the modern comforts and facilities.
