Spitz an der Donau is a market town in the district of Krems-Land in the Austrian state of Lower Austria, in the midst of the UNESCO World Heritage area Wachau, further down from Willendorf on the left bank of the Danube. The ferry across the Danube here is interesting in that it has no motor or sail: it is powered by rudder set against the river current, anchored to a cable above the river. The ferry carries passengers, bicycles, motorcycles, and automobiles.

The Wachau is an Austrian valley with a picturesque landscape formed by the Danube river.
It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations of Lower Austria, located midway between the towns of Melk and Krems
that also attracts connoisseurs and epicureans for its high-quality wines.
It is 40 kilometres in length and was already settled in prehistoric times.
A well-known place and tourist attraction is Dürnstein, where King Richard the Lion-Heart of England was held captive by Duke Leopold V.
The architectural elegance of its ancient monasteries, castles and ruins combined with the urban architecture of its towns and villages, and the cultivation of vines as an important agricultural produce are the dominant features of the valley.
The Wachau was inscribed as Wachau Cultural Landscape in the UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites in recognition of its architectural and agricultural history, in December 2000.
In the Wachau, the town of Spitz lies on the Danube's western bank and the city of Melk on its eastern bank.
Other important towns in the valley are Dürnstein, Weißenkirchen in der Wachau and Emmersdorf an der Donau,
which have a galaxy of old homestead buildings dating from the mid-6th century.
The railway line built in 1909 between Krems and Emmersdorf is a topographical marvel.
The Danube River has a good network consisting of an inland navigation system.
The Wachau valley historic sights can be visited by steamer boats; the best season to visit is between May and September.
Autobahn services are also available from Vienna to visit all the important places in the Wachau.
The well-developed road network between Melk and Krems follows the contour of the valley.
However, there are no bridges across the Danube River in this region, and ferries are the only way to cross the river.
The origin of the wine growing tradition in Austria, and in particular in the Wachau valley, and its popularity beyond its borders, is attributed to medieval period of the Roman settlements.
The Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districts date to Leuthold I von Kuenring (1243–1313).
Wine production peaked under the Carolingians.
Krems has a long history as the hub of the Wachau wine trade, while the town of Dürnstein is also known for being one of the Wachau wine centres.

Sacred monuments recall the triumph of Catholicism over Protestantism and more than a hundred buildings provide an authentic picture of the old town. Krems resembles a mediaeval city. The wrought iron signs of middleclass dwellings of varous building epochs still shine out today in century-old splendour with the narrow streets of the old town and Italian-looking city palaces whose well-preserved sgraffiti and stucco work recalls the prosperity of yesteryear. Dürnstein is a place with a long history and unique appearance. A small, mediaeval town of both legend and world renown and with a remarkable Augustinian Canon Monastery whose Baroque architecture was created by Jacob Prandtauer. The market town of Spitz is situated in the heart of the Wachau and is connected to the Danube steam navigation system that, from1829, made the river more accessible. A sixteenth century parish church is located within the town’s fine market square, flanked by the fine old buildings of the local vine growers. The view over the village of Melk is overwhelming. A spiral staircase leads down into Melk’s monastery church whose sumptuous interior architecture is unique. The Wachau is a total experience, a wonderful melting pot of culture, nature and history.

The Wachau is the most famous stretch of the Danube in Austria, thirty six kilometres of romantic Danube Valley. Today’s townscape of Krems brings back bygone days and a particularly beautifully-preserved street complex. More than a hundred buildings provide an authentic picture of the Old Town. Today, the buildings’ façades and entrances are decorated in the traditional way and show off the town’s splendid Renaissance and mediaeval buildings. Sacred monuments recall the victory of Catholicism over Protestantism following two centuries of hostilities. Up the Danube to Dürnstein, a place with a long history and unique appearance. Arrival by boat is particularly scenic and a jetty leads to a wall from where a gate and steps provide access to the Old Town. The small mediaeval town clings picturesquely to the cliffs above the Danube, guarded by castle ruins and fortified walls. In Roman times, vines were cultivated in this picturesque area due to the region’s ideal growing conditions and Weissenkirchen has always been a wine-growing centre. The steep river valley and its terraced vine gardens enjoy a temperate climate. The small village has a long and dramatic history and its old houses and lanes are indelibly evocative of the past. Spitz is picturesquely embedded within its surrounding vineyards, and the legendary Thousand Bucket Mountain is an imposing sight. It was not only due to wine but also the trading of both wood and salt that Spitz attained an important position in the Middle Ages and at the beginning of modern times. Since the year 2000, the Wachau has been a World Cultural Region, a gem on the long route of the Danube, a picturesque river valley where both mediaeval and Baroque create an exceptional atmosphere, and nature, the perfect setting.

The wrought iron signs on its buildings and its wonderful historic atmosphere are truly captivating. The former stronghold and subsequent rival of Vienna contains several beautiful lanes and imposing buildings that reflect the wealth of its former citizens. Amid the vast terraces of the Wachau vineyards is the village of Weissenkirchen in which several hospitable inns provide their customers with an ideal opportunity to sample the wines of this region. Winegrowing has a long tradition in this section of the Danube and the area between Krems and Melk is one of the oldest cultivated landscapes in Austria. The Wachau is a landscape full of warmth as well as being steeped in history and age old traditions.
