Cornwall drives: St Merryn to Padstow North Cornwall
Enjoy a drive through North Cornwall in early June with the heatwave of summer arriving early in 2009. I love this part of the world and drive these lanes many tmes. We begin at St Merryn village at the crossroads coming from Porthcothan Bay. The Farmers Arms Pub is on the left. There is the legendary FryerTucks Fish and Chip Restauant at St Merryn, Very tasty fish guaranteed. Down the hill and we pass The Cornish Arms Public House. This is the best pub for a drink at lunchtime. You can sit in the sun and breathe in the fresh air of North Cornwall, while you look across at the pretty old Church and Churchyard. If you are lucky the bell ringing is being practiced by skilled local campanologists.
I was told that Rick Stein has taken over the lease of The Cornish Arms, which may explain why my crab sandwich was mouth-watering. [Note for Rick Stein: can you put fish and chips back on the menu?] With a bottle of Admiral's Ale it goes down very well, indeed. When you ask for it at the bar, mention it is the ale that's kept in the backroom for people who know their real ale!
After lunch, when you arrive into Padstow, the view over the Camel Estuary is stunning, white sands and turquoise water, where it meets the Atlantic.
I am afraid the railway has gone (although it's possible it may be coming back) and the quayside is a car park for the town. However, a walk down the quay will bring you to Rick Steins Fish and Chip take away, very good, and reasonable, judging by the queus. Very popular. There are also wet fish shops where one can buy fresh fish, and they will keep your purchase chilled for you will continue walking around Padstow. Great, if you are self catering , to take back to your accommodation to cook. Our favourite local pub is The Golden Lion in Padstow (Lanadwell Street), because the food is good and you can catch up on the local news from the regulars, including the charming retired ex-postie.
The London Inn is very good too, in the same street. Of course, Rick Steins restaurants are excellent, as you would expect. Try The Seafood Resturuant on Riverside for your special night dinner. Outside of Padstow, a good bet and lovely setting is the The Falcon Inn, in St Mawgan on the way to Newquay from Padstow, at Mawgan Porth. Turn in-land and follow the lanes where you'll find a wonderful old pub and beergarden. A lovely place to spend an evening chatting over dinner and magic, if you get good weather.
If you like a dog friendley, superb, proper real ale (CAMRA) pub, look up The Blisland Inn at Blisland- What a great Pub! Food is great, atmosphere is friendly and the setting and welcoming are perfect. A good visit!
As you can see, this part of Cornwall is a place I return to whenever I can. Hope you enjoy it, as I much as we do.

Applegarth Park is located near Seasalter on the north Kent coast.

Padstow Fishing Port On The North Coast Of Cornwall.
Padstow is a town, civil parish and fishing port on the north coast of Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The town is situated on the west bank of the River Camel estuary approximately 5 miles (8.0km) northwest of Wadebridge, 10 miles (16km) northwest of Bodmin and 10 miles (16km) northeast of Newquay. The population of Padstow civil parish was 3,162 in the 2001 census, reducing to 2,993 at the 2011 census In addition an electoral ward with the same name exists but extends as far as Trevose Head. The population for this ward is 4,434
Padstow was originally named Petroc-stow, Petroc-stowe, or 'Petrock's Place', after the Welsh missionary Saint Petroc, who landed at Trebetherick around AD 500. After his death a monastery (Lanwethinoc, the church of Wethinoc an earlier holy man) was established here which was of great importance until Petroces stow (probably Padstow) was raided by the Vikings in 981, according to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. Whether as a result of this attack or later, the monks moved inland to Bodmin, taking with them the relics of St Petroc. The cult of St Petroc was important both in Padstow and Bodmin.
Padstow is recorded in the Domesday Book (1086) when it was held by Bodmin Monastery. There was land for 4 ploughs, 5 villeins who had 2 ploughs, 6 smallholders and 24 acres of pasture. It was valued at 10/- (10 shillings or 50p).
In the medieval period Padstow was commonly called Aldestowe ('old place' in contrast to Bodmin, the 'new place'). or Hailemouth (hayle being Cornish for estuary). The modern Cornish form Lannwedhenek derives from Lanwethinoc and in a simpler form appears in the name of the Lodenek Press, a publisher based in Padstow.
The seal of the borough of Padstow was a ship with three masts, the sails furled and an anchor hanging from the bow, with the legend Padstow.
Time Team visited Padstow for the episode From Constantinople to Cornwall, broadcast on 9 March 2008.
There are two Cornish crosses in the parish: one is built into a wall in the old vicarage garden and another is at Prideaux Place (consisting of a four-holed head and part of an ornamented cross shaft). There is also part of a decorated cross shaft in the churchyard.
