Thanks for finding my video and pressing play!
In this video I take one of Europe’s forgotten trains - the Enterprise. This is the service connecting the two Irish capitals, Dublin in the Republic with Belfast in Northern Ireland. The journey takes around 2 hours and 15 minutes on the fastest weekday services.
This is an international train, as Northern Ireland is part of the UK. The open and invisible border between the two means our journey is seamless and easy, with no passport or customs checks needed.
First Plus - now seemingly also branded Enterprise Plus - is very comfortable indeed and is well patronised. In fact, on this trip there were a number of senior MLAs (members of Northern Ireland’s devolved Parliament) on board, though they aren’t pictured! One of the reasons this train feels roomy and comfortable is the fact that Irish trains run on a broader gauge - rails are five feet apart as opposed to European gauge used in Britain of four feet eight and a half inches.
Autumn and winter aren’t the best for filming - lots of reflections and it being dark outside made for a fair amount of unusable footage....argh.
For those of you who like to keep track of this sort of thing, yep - I took this journey immediately after my Newquay to Dublin flight with Aer Lingus!

Since 2008 Mary and Jorn have lived year round on their 50ft barge Froya, on the Shannon – Erne waterways.
Their combined passion for the waterways, barging, food, and entertaining makes them ideal hosts. Both have years of experience from catering for film and TV productions. From Killnaskully to You’re a star, Failte Towers and the 2007 Nicholas Roeg directed “Puffball”.
Mary McInerney hails from Galway and has 15 years’ experience of barge life. Mary first hired barges from Riversdale Barges, Ballinamore, and 5 years ago, together with her husband Jorn, they designed and purchased their own 50 ft. barge house boat, which they live on year round on the Shannon Erne Waterway.
Mary has previous business experience, ranging from starting an antique market in Galway to authoring ”The Irish Guide to Antiques” selling 5000 copies. She went on to set up a T.V. & film catering business and has worked on location with Killinascully, Magma Film, Fáilte Towers, Celebrity go Wild and You’re A Star. During that time, Mary also provided a catering service to corporate and private clients.
Jorn Bjerknes was born in Oslo, Norway and has lived in Ireland for the past 7 years. Jorn is a skipper, singer songwriter, chef, keen horseman, PADI diver, tennis player, golfer and sportsman.

What is hotel barging?
Despite the growing popularity of cruising, especiallly on large river vessels, hotel barging is still a little known niche concept. Most hotel barges started life as cargo vessels but have since been painstakingly converted to offer luxury boutique accommodation for small groups of up to 20 passengers.
This is cruising, but in a very different style to ships plying the big rivers or oceans. The pace is slow, with a 6 day cruise covering maybe just 50 miles along a rural canal. Passengers can walk or bike the towpaths as their floating hotel glides gently along. Guests enjoy an intimate atmosphere, high levels of personal service and immersion into the culture, history and gastronomy of regions of Europe such as Burgundy, the Midi, or the Italian Veneto.
Every day there is an excursion, perhaps to a chateau, a vineyard for a wine tasting, or some other ‘off the beaten track’ location. I guess you can call this the epic pub crawl-we visited several Irish pubs in five Irish cities-Dublin, Kilkenny, Killarney, Cork, and Galway. I filmed 11 live performances overall. While some pub performers play famous cover songs, many of them play traditional Irish music, which is my favorite. I hope you had fun watching and cheers, or as they say in Ireland-Sláinte!
