Locronan is a very impressive and unspoiled Brittany village and certainly one of our personal favourite villages in France. Officially one of the 'most beautiful villages of France', it is 15 kilometres north-west of Quimper in the Finistere department of western Brittany.
With a history that goes back more than 2000 years, Locronan was originally a sacred place for the celts known as a 'nemeton'. It then became an important religious centre during the middle ages, and an important centre for the manufacture of sail-cloth for the local ship-building industry during the 16th and 17th centuries. Each of these epoques has left its mark on the town and region which is of course now better known as a popular tourist destination.
The whole centre of Locronan is extremely well preserved and quite extensive, and largely built in the distinctive local granite. The solid houses with traditional slate rooves are interspersed with plenty of greenery, making for a very attractive village. Park in the main car park and enter the village by walking along the straight street that leads from here to the centre of the village (some cars had driven into the centre of Locronan when we visited but you are only saving about 100 metres of walking by doing this and cars do little to help make the village look medieval)
There are a traditional granite houses and a few restaurants and shops along this street and the village church is straight ahead of you. You quickly reach the cobbled Place de l'Eglise: from this square you can easily reach all the highlights in the village and explore the surrounding streets.
The Place de l'Eglise is a large, attractive square entirely paved and surrounded on all sides by very well preserved ancient buildings, with the substantial vaulted church the most imposing among them. Almost all the houses date from the 17th and 18th centuries and are different heights and have small architectural highlights and characterful roofs that make them interesting, and there is an ancient well in the centre of the square.
There are lots of villages in France we describe as having 'well preserved medieval squares'. Locronan is certainly among the most impressive of them, and Monpazier in the Dordogne is another. Take the time to explore in and around the Church of Saint Ronan that dates from the 15th century and the almost separate building on the right side of the church that was built to hold the tomb of Saint-Ronan and has a tall thin spire-belltower.
In the interior of the church there is an intricate altar, numerous stained glass windows, carved reliefs and medieval religious statues of painted wood: the 'pieta' of the Virgin and dead Christ and the statue of Saint Ronan are among the most interesting. Behind the church there is also an attractive small cemetery and a small garden area which you should take a stroll around.
There are also a few small shops and cafes around the square. From here it is easy to explore the rest of centre of the village as streets depart in all directions: to the left of the church follow the loop formed by Rue des Charrettes and Rue du Four and opposite stroll along the narrow road called Venelle Toul Prichen.

Quiberon is a town and a peninsula on the southern coast of the Finistère department of western Brittany, near Carnac. The peninsula is 14 kilometres long and connected to mainland France by little more than a bank of sand with a road across it, with the entrance to the peninsula being overlooked by the 19th century Fort de Penthièvre. Although there are few important monuments in the town of Quiberon it is pleasant to explore: your visit will be centred around the port and on the long sandy beach in the town itself. This main beach is almost one kilometre long and called La Grande Plage.
Behind the beach you can see various grand villas dating from the time that Quiberon became established as a resort at the end of the 19th century, when trainlines first arrived here, as well as some more recent developments. In the town behind the beach you can see typical low Brittany whitewashed houses and shops, and the 12th century Church of Notre-Dame de Locmaria. There is also a small museum dedicated to the history of the Quiberon peninsula, called the Maison du Patrimoine (on rue de Port Haliguen in the town centre). There are two ports here: Port Maria, where the fishing fleet is based and from where you can take excursions to the nearby islands, and Port Haliguen, which is the port for pleasure boats. The castle you can see on a headland is called Chateau Turpault and was built in 1910 - it is not open to the public.
The Quiberon peninsula is a very popular seaside resort in the summer, and has some attractive beaches on the sheltered eastern coast. The most popular beaches (apart from the beach in Quiberon town) are those at Saint-Pierre and Penthievre. At Saint-Pierre-de-Quiberon you can also visit the menhirs (the town lies at the southern end of the 'Coast of megaliths' which runs south from Carnac on to the peninsula).
Head to the most southerly point on the peninsula, called the Pointe du Conguel, for the best view across the to the islands in Quiberon Bay. Pointe de Percho at the north-west of the peninsula is also well worth visiting for the views across to the islands of Belle-Ile and Groix.
The western coast of the peninsula is altogether more dramatic and a popular site with walkers, cyclists and nature lovers. While the coast here is very pleasant to explore on foot or by bike, there is also a road that follows this western part of Quiberon and incorporates numerous stopping places, so it is still easy to enjoy the scenery. Include Kervihan, Kerné and Kerniscop for some of the most dramatic scenery. The other main reason that Quiberon attracts visitors is because ferries to the popular islands of Belle-Ile, Ile de Houat and Ile de Hoedic leave from the port here.

Je vous emmène aujourd'hui à Locronan, dans mon top 10 des plus beaux villages.
En virée en Bretagne, ne faites pas l'impasse sur ce lieu exceptionnel, où de nombreux films ont été tournés, tant il semble que le temps s'est arrêté.
Parmi ces films, il y eut « Tess », de Roman Polanski, « Chouans », avec Philippe Noiret et Sophie Marceau, et, dans un genre plus léger, « Vos gueules les mouettes ! » avec un désopilant duo de Pierres, le Mondy et le Tornade.
C'est à l'occasion de la fête de Belenos que je vous ai cueilli ces images. Cette fête a lieu début mai et voit notamment la plantation d'un hêtre au cœur du village, cet arbre étant sacré dans la civilisation celtique. Cette fête marque le passage entre la saison sombre et la saison claire.
Et puisque nous en sommes pile-poil à l'inverse, et que nous faisons irruption dans une série de semaines grisâtres, j'ai pensé que ça vous réchaufferait le cœur et l'esprit. Si vous suivez donc mon conseil d'aller goûter cette belle tranche de France, sachez que vous avez à proximité deux beaux Villages Vacances Cap France : Ker Beuz, à Tregarvan (à 24 km de Locronan), et le domaine de Ker Huel, à Douarnenez (10 km).

Giverny est un village datant des Mérovingiens, situé en Haute-Normandie, dans le département de l'Eure. Claude Monet (1840-1926) y vécut de 1883 à sa mort. Père du mouvement impressioniste, il composa son merveilleux jardin comme une palette de peintre. Au rythme des saisons, les fleurs, les arbres vibrent dans la lumière changeante du soleil. En France, Giverny a influencé beaucoup de jardins privés.
