Rügen is Germany's largest island by area.
It is located off the Pomeranian coast in the Baltic Sea and belongs to the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The gateway to Rügen island is the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, where it is linked to the mainland by road and railway via the Rügen Bridge and Causeway, two routes crossing the two-kilometre-wide Strelasund, a sound of the Baltic Sea.
Rügen has a maximum length of 51.4 km (from north to south), a maximum width of 42.8 km in the south and an area of 926 km².
The coast is characterized by numerous sandy beaches, lagoons (Bodden) and open bays (Wieke), as well as projecting peninsulas and headlands.
In June 2011, UNESCO awarded the status of a World Heritage Site to the Jasmund National Park, famous for its vast stands of beeches and chalk cliffs like King's Chair, the main landmark of Rügen island.
The island of Rügen is part of the district of Vorpommern-Rügen, with its county seat in Stralsund.
The towns on Rügen are: Bergen, Sassnitz, Putbus and Garz.
In addition, there are the Baltic seaside resorts of Binz, Baabe, Göhren, Sellin and Thiessow.
Rügen is very popular as a tourist destination because of its resort architecture, the diverse landscape and its long, sandy beaches.
The island receives about one quarter of all overnight stays in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Most visitors come to Rügen between April and October, the peak season being from June to August, but its quiet atmosphere in winter is also appreciated.
The island offers a huge variety of different beach and shore areas.
Rügen is often visited by windsurfers and kitesurfers and offers more than fifteen different locations for surfing.
The most popular locations are Dranske, Rosengarten, Wiek, Suhrendorf and Neu Mukran.
On the peninsula of Jasmund is the Jasmund National Park, which consists of the beech forest of Stubnitz, including the famous chalk cliffs of Rügen.
On the Königsstuhl itself is the Königsstuhl National Park Centre, which has a multivision cinema and audio-guide exhibitions with information about the national park in several languages.

Stralsund City Tour, Germany
On day five we said goodbye to Ruegen island and hit the road once again stopping first at Stralsund. This Hanseatic city is steeped with history and is a UNESCO heritage site because its roads and city grid have remained the same over the years. With just a few hours to explore we got to see some of the impressive brick architecture, visit a fascinating museum dedicated to German playing cards and eat a Bismarck Herring sandwich for lunch. We left wishing we had a few more days instead of hours to linger.

Our final stop for the day, after being on the road for a while, was at Freilichtmuseum Klockenhagen. This open-air museum featured farm animals, theme rooms and rustic collection of artifacts. Our favorite activity was testing out the old bicycles including a Penny Farthing.
Stralsund City Tour, Germany Travel Video Transcript:
So this morning we're going to be visiting the city of Stralsund which is known for its red brick buildings. Apparently, the city dates back to medieval times and it is considered a UNESCO world heritage site because a lot of the roads are still exactly the same as what they were hundreds of years ago. So we're going to take a walking tour of the city and it should be lots of fun.
The city of Stralsund was founded back in 1234 and it was a Hanseatic city that conducted trade in the Baltic Sea. During our walking tour we learned a few interesting facts including that Stralsund was once a huge producer or playing cards. That they have one of the best examples Gothic red brick architecture and that they made one delicious Bismarck Herring sandwich.
Okay, so you seem to have found some food. What are you having? I sure have. I've found something called Bismarck Herring and it is the form of a sandwich. And it is one of the most famous things here you can have in Stralsund. So I'm going to take a bite of this. I'm really excited.
That is such a juicy and it is kind of almost a bit sour kind of fish. It is quite tasty. I like it.
So I'd like to point out that many celebrities, presidents and even royals have eaten at this restaurant including the one and only George Bush.
Half a day was not enough to do this city justice but hopefully these clips help capture the feel of the place.
Okay, so this afternoon we are visiting a place called Freilichtmuseum Klockenhagen. And it is basically an outdoor open-air museum where we can see what life was like a few centuries ago. So it is a cute little village. There is some farms and farm animals just roaming around so I think we're going to take a walk through, see what we find, maybe visit a few of the different workshops that they have here. And yeah, just have a good afternoon.
So it looks like someone found themselves a new job. Who wants to be a travel blogger when you can drive a tractor like this.
Something interesting we've been doing on the property here is they have these different theme rooms. We've checked out a classroom and over here we have different kinds of old old farming equipment. Check it out.
So this reminds me of bingo. You know how you have to roll the little thing and pick out the number. But according to this little sign here this machine was used for sorting potatoes depending on their size. Bingo, potatoes same thing you know.
It looks like we've found something a little more manageable. What have you got there? That's kind of a rattling old thing. How does it compare to a normal bike? Ah, it sounds very rusty. Is it like unstable? It is easier than the penny farthing I couldn't get on.
Ready? So this lovely little throne is called a Strandkorb and basically it is a beach chair. So here up at the Baltic Sea it is kind of windy even in the summertime so people need a little bit of protection so they can enjoy their holiday and maybe tan without getting too cold. So yeah, these little baskets are pretty cool. And you can pull this out so you have a place where to rest your feet.
And they also have a fancy little shelf so you can enjoy a glass of cold beer.

Visiting Spreewald, Germany
To say we hit the ground running after arriving in Germany would be an understatement. Multiple flights, renting a car, visiting several museums and reacquainting ourselves with some of our favorite German foods were all squeezed in to day one. The highlights of the day spent in Spreewald included Freilandmuseum Lehde (Open air museum), Gurkenmuseum (Pickle and Cucumber Museum) and an enormous plate of Schnitzel and grilled fish. Whew! We're officially back. What a day!

Visiting Spreewald, Germany Travel Video Transcript:
So hello from Germany! We've finally made it here this morning. We're still feeling a little jet lagged and disoriented but we got here in the morning, we picked up a car at the airport, we've driven down to a place called Spreewald. Which is the Spree forest. And we're just going to spend the next couple of days checking out the area. Just visiting the canals. This is a great place for nature. And apparently also cucumbers. So we're going to be taking in the sights, sampling some food and showing you guys around.
Let's go check out the village. So right now we're checking out the Freilandmuseum Lehde. Which is a cool outdoor open air museum and basically they have these old homes that date back to the 19th Century. And you can see what life was like during that time period. So we're going to be walking through, learning about their customs, their traditions. And I think it is going to make us really thankful for the time period we live in right now.
Alright, so what are we doing next? It is time to play some kids games from the 19th century. And I have a feeling this is going to make us look very uncoordinated.
So we're going to be visiting a few different homes in this open air museum. And they really vary in size and character. So this is one of the cool ones. Let's go in and peruse. So inside this home we have the wedding planner wearing a very beautiful elaborate suit and gown kind of deal. If you follow me over here you can see people getting ready for a wedding. And apparently the bride would have worn a black and green. Not white because white was considered the colour of mourning.
So that was a lot of fun. I think we're just about ready to leave the open air museum and we'll see what else we can find.
So we're now visiting a cucumber museum. It is a little bit quirky. And we're going to be looking at how pickles are produced and the history behind them. So every year in this area they have a festival where they select the cucumber queen. And basically these girls come and present their recipes of their pickled cucumbers and whoever has the best tasting one wins and she's crowned for the year.
So my meal has arrived and it looks so amazing. I think I'm not even going to share with Sam. That is so mean. This is. No it is not. This is my pike perch. It's on a bed of sauteed vegetables. And I also have a nice little um baked potato here with some kind of sauce with dill. Woah, that looks like a very generous amount. That looks amazing. So I'm just going to dig right in. This looks wonderful. I need a knife. This looks so good. Oh my gosh. How is that? The fish is perfection. The skin is nice and crispy, buttery and it is just so good. Juicy on the inside?
You know how I can tell you're enjoying it? You don't want to talk anymore. No, I just want to eat. What is happening over in your plate? Also, mine looks pretty good. I've got boar schnitzel which is down here. Oh, la lah. And sauerkraut here and a kind of mashed potato over here. With horseradish. Wish horseradish. Alright, let's try the schnitzel. Oh, look at that. That's really good schnitzel. So what does boar schnitzel taste like? It has a rich, a little bit of a game-y taste but the thing I really like about this schnitzel is just the coating they put over top of it. It's really crispy. So we just finished an absolutely wonderful meal and we are feeling stuffed. We're also feeling a little bit jet lagged so I think we're going to call it a day and just go get some rest and we'll see you tomorrow.

Visiting Rügen Island, Germany
With one full day to explore Ruegen Island, the largest in all of Germany, we had an itinerary full of activities. One of the highlights included renting an e-trabi (Trabant) car of the former GDR (East Germany) era taking it for a spin. The typical engine had been replaced by an electric motor making it a more environmentally friendly ride.

We then visited Göhren where we sampled freshly made German bread with generous amounts of butter and herbs before checking out a couple of local museums featuring traditional farming equipment, horse drawn carriage equipment and kitchenware. Nearby we cooled off at North Beach where hundreds flock to tan and swim.
To visit more of Rügen we traded in our car for train ticket passes. Boarding the Roland Racer, a former steam engine commuter train, we passed scenic towns, forests and farmland.
Hearing about the famed chalky cliffs we headed over to Jasmund National Park to marvel at them in person.
Although we packed a lot into one day of travel we left feeling we barely covered the island. Hopefully we'll have a chance to return again soon to visit more areas.

So good morning from Germany. It is day four of our big road trip around the country and today we are exploring around Rügen Island.
So we have a very busy itinerary today. We are planning to visit the white chalky cliffs of Jasmund National Park. We're also going to be riding around in an e-Trabi and we're going to be traveling by steam engine train.
So that should be a real adventure and I think we're also going to finish things off with a few visits to museums.
So a fun day ahead. Let's go start exploring.
So we're about to ride on the Roland Racer which is an old fashioned steam engine train.
Though the train was once used as a commuter train for locals these days you're more likely to find visitors enjoying the scenic route.
The tracks run past farms, villages and stretches of forest. It is an absolutely spectacular ride.
So we have now arrived at a place called Königsstuhl at Jasmund National Park. And this is a world heritage UNESCO site and it is really well known for its white chalky cliffs. I'm sure most of you have seen the white cliffs of Dover. Well, Germany has something just like it.
So this is our sweet ride for the day. We're going to be driving an e Trabi around the island. So this is an old fashioned trabant. It would have been the car that they drove in East Germany the former GDR. And they've put in an electric motor in it so now it is good for the environment and we're going to be cruising. It is nice and colorful so I think we're going to make quite the impression on the roads.
So we are still visiting the town of Göhren but right now we are down at the beach here at the promenade. So this area is called North Beach and it is beautiful for strolling, maybe doing a bit of sunbathing and we have some great weather today so a lot of people are out just enjoying the sun.
We've got a slice of the local bread here. It has just been freshly made and if you look down you can see that it has got a generous portion of butter and also herbs. So let's try this out. It is amazing. So fresh. Such a generous amount of butter. That's probably about three times as much butter as I would normally put on my bread but it tastes really good.
We then visited a few local museums in Göhren which showcased life as it was a few centuries back. Their collection included a mixture of farming equipment, horse drawn carriages and furniture that would have found in local households.
That was a really busy day. We've just arrived back home. We're going to rest up because tomorrow we're off to a new destination.

Rügen - The beautiful island in the Eastsea. Or rather Baltic Sea (Germany)
For Germans this Island is very well known for its beaches and spa like atmosphere. Especially the chalk cliffs are famous. I did a roadtrip and visited a friend on Ruegen and had to realize again, that my home country has also really nice places to visit...if the weather is good:) See places like Sassnitz, Binz, Sellin, Proras. But the east coast has even more interesting places like Strahlsund, Lübeck, Fehmarn or Timmendorfer Beach. Enjoy the film.
