Strobl am Wolfgangsee, Austria
Strobl am Wolfgangsee is located at the southern end of the lake in the Salzkammergut area of Austria and one can understand why it is so popular with actors because of its pictoresque location. The town has a population of around 3,500 and was 'discovered' in the nineteenth cenutry due to its proximity to Bad Ischl where the Emperor used to spend the summer. This grew especially after the arrival of the railway and the steamer which still sails between Sankt Wolfgang and Sankt Gilgen.
Strobl was the summer home of the actor Emil Jannings from 1929 after his return from Hollywood where he had been a popular actor but with the arrival of the talkies his thick German accent did not get him roles. After 1933 he threw in his lot with the Nazis and there are photographs with him on Wolfgangsee with Joseph Goebbels. After the liberation of Austria, Jannings moved permanently to Strobl being unable to get any work acting due to his previous Nazi connections.
Another actor who became the mayor of the town was Theo Lingen who served in the role for a few days after liberation in May 1945. And yet another is Helene Thimig wife of thetare director Max Reinhardt, who lived more than 20 years in Strobl. She is memorialized by a bust on the Promenade.

St. Gilgen, Austria
St. Gilgen (Sankt Gilgen) is a charming town on the shore of Lake Wolfgang (Wolfgangsee) in the Salzkammergut region of Austria. Surrounded by mountains, it lies at 545 metres. It is very popular among international tourists, who come to St. Gilgen on day trips during the summer season. The area offers a good base for walkers, hikers and sightseers. St. Gilgen is famous for its scenery, the historic town centre and the access to Lake Wolfgangsee. Mozart's mother was born here and the village has a definite historic atmosphere. In front of the Mozart Memorial House, there is a small garden with a charming fountain by Toni Schneider Manzell, depicting Mozart's mother as a small girl. The fountain on the Mozartplatz in St. Gilgen shows the young Mozart playing the violin, surrounded by birds spouting water. The fountain, which dates back to 1926, is the work of the Viennese art nouveau sculptor, Karl Wollek. This charming town can be visited as a day trip from Salzburg but would also be a great place to stay for a longer visit.

Schafberg, Zahnradbahn, Salzburg - Austria HD Travel Channel
The meter gauge cogwheel railway takes us to the Schafberg in Upper Austria, whose summit lays in Salzburg. With a length of nearly 3 mi. it gains about 3937.0 ft in height difference with a maximum gradient of 25.5%.
The terminus is located at an altitude 5577.43 ft. At a high visitor frequency two trains drive in a short distance behind each other. The Schafbergbahn is in operation since 1893, the oil-fired steam locomotives ( Z serie ) date from 1992. The original coal-fired locomotives from 1893 are only used for nostalgia journeys.
A wonderful place to see the lakes of the Salzkammergut is below the Schafberg summit at the mountain hut Himmelspforte - Pearly Gates - (5774.28 ft). From here you have a fantastic panorama view over the Attersee, Mondsee and Wolfgangsee .
Besides hiking and sunbathing you can also pass the time watching the paragliders who find here ideal training conditions.
