AUGSBURG: EXPLORING one of GERMANY'S OLDEST CITIES, top attractions
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit Augsburg which is a city in Swabia, Bavaria, Germany. It is a university town and it is the third-largest city in Bavaria (after Munich and Nuremberg) with a population of 286,000 citizens. After Neuss and Trier, Augsburg is Germany's third oldest city, being founded by the Romans as Augusta Vindelicorum, named after the Roman emperor Augustus.
Augsburg was the home of two patrician families that rose to great prominence internationally, replacing the Medicis as Europe's leading bankers, the Fugger and the Welser families.

Discover Germany's Regions - Best of rural places around Cologne, Frankfurt, Lake Constance and more
The Bergisches Land is a low mountain range in North Rhine-Westphalia, close to Cologne. It is part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains and shaped by forests, verdant meadows and valleys.
The Bergisches coffee spread, a culinary tradition is still an expression of the warm hospitality in the Bergisches Land.
The Swabian Alb is a plateau in the south of Germany - it is the highest part of the foothills of the Jura Mountains, northern from Lake Constance. The Häußlers live in Schwörzkirch, a small village on the edge of the Swabian Alb overlooking the Valley. Lentils and Spätzle, the national dish, used to be a typical Friday meal in this predominantly Catholic region.
The Schwalm region lies in Germany’s Hessen, north of Frankfurt. The Erbe family live in the artist’s village Willingshausen and run a small pottery workshop. The local cuisine is hearty and down to earth; it is made up of what the soil offers for this was once a poor farming region.
The Harz is a low mountain range through which the German-German border used to run. The Thielecke family made a new start after the reunification between East and West and breed the Harz red highland cattle, and old cattle type with very tender meat. A regional culinary speciality is the Harz cheese, a low-fat yoghurt cheese with an intense aroma.
The Rhineland Palatinate lies between the Rhine and the “Pfalzer” Forest, on the south-eastern tip of North Rhine Westphalia. The many sunny days make for a mild climate – just the right conditions for the organic farmer Michael Groß. He not only cultivates 40 different types of vegetables but also lupines.

Places to see in ( Bavaria - Germany )
Places to see in ( Bavaria - Germany )
Bavaria is a state in southeastern Germany bordering Liechtenstein, Austria and the Czech Republic. State capital Munich is known for its annual Oktoberfest beer festival, art museums and ornate Nymphenburg Palace. The Romantic Road scenic route starts in northwestern Würzburg, winds south through pastoral villages and medieval towns and culminates in the foothills of the Alps near Germany’s southern border.
Located in the German southeast with an area of 70,548 square kilometres (27,200 sq mi), Bavaria is the largest German state. Its territory comprises roughly a fifth of the total land area of Germany, and, with 12.9 million inhabitants, it is Germany's second most populous state. Munich, Bavaria's capital and largest city, is the third largest city in Germany. The Duchy of Bavaria dates back to the year 555. In the 17th century CE (AD), the Duke of Bavaria became a Prince-elector of the Holy Roman Empire. The Kingdom of Bavaria existed from 1806 to 1918, when Bavaria became a republic. In 1946, the Free State of Bavaria re-organised itself on democratic lines after the Second World War. Modern Bavaria also includes parts of the historical regions of Franconia, Upper Palatinate and Swabia.
Bavaria shares international borders with Austria (Salzburg, Tyrol, Upper Austria and Vorarlberg) and the Czech Republic (Karlovy Vary, Plzeň and South Bohemian Regions) as well as with Switzerland (across Lake Constance to the Canton of St. Gallen). Because all of these countries are part of the Schengen Area, the border is completely open. Neighbouring states within Germany are Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, Thuringia and Saxony. Two major rivers flow through the state: the Danube (Donau) and the Main. The Bavarian Alps define the border with Austria (including the Austrian federal-states of Vorarlberg, Tyrol and Salzburg), and within the range is the highest peak in Germany: the Zugspitze. The Bavarian Forest and the Bohemian Forest form the vast majority of the frontier with the Czech Republic and Bohemia. The major cities in Bavaria are Munich (München), Nuremberg (Nürnberg), Augsburg, Regensburg, Würzburg, Ingolstadt, Fürth and Erlangen.
Bavaria is home to several football clubs including FC Bayern Munich, 1. FC Nuremberg, FC Augsburg, TSV 1860 München, FC Ingolstadt 04 and SpVgg Greuther Fürth. Bayern Munich is the most popular and successful football team in Germany having won a record 25 German titles. They are followed by 1.FC Nuremberg who have won 9 titles. SpVgg Greuther Fürth have won 3 championships while TSV 1860 München have been champions once. FC Bayern won the 2013 UEFA Champions League final.

Hohenzollern Castle is the ancestral seat of the imperial House of Hohenzollern.
The third of three hilltop castles on the site, it is located atop Mount Hohenzollern, above and south of Hechingen, on the edge of the Swabian Jura of central Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
The first fortress on the mountain was constructed in the early 11th century.
Over the years the House of Hohenzollern split several times, but the castle remained in the Swabian branch, the dynastic seniors of the Franconian-Brandenburgian cadet branch that later acquired its own imperial throne.
This castle was completely destroyed in 1423 after a ten-month siege by the free imperial cities of Swabia.
A larger and sturdier structure was constructed from 1454 to 1461, which served as a refuge for the Catholic Swabian Hohenzollerns, including during the Thirty Years' War.
By the end of the 18th century it was thought to have lost its strategic importance and gradually fell into disrepair, leading to the demolition of several dilapidated buildings.
The final castle was built between 1846 and 1867 as a family memorial by Hohenzollern scion King Frederick William IV of Prussia.
Architect Friedrich August Stüler based his design on English Gothic Revival architecture and the Châteaux of the Loire Valley.
No member of the Hohenzollern family was in permanent or regular residence when it was completed, and none of the three German Emperors of the late 19th and early 20th century German Empire ever occupied the castle.
In 1945 it briefly became the home of the former Crown Prince Wilhelm of Germany, son of the last Hohenzollern monarch, Kaiser Wilhelm II.
Among the historical artifacts of Prussian history contained in the castle are the Crown of Wilhelm II, some of the personal effects of King Frederick the Great, and a letter from US President George Washington thanking Hohenzollern descendant Baron von Steuben for his service in the American Revolutionary War.
With over 350,000 visitors per year Hohenzollern castle is one of the most visited castles in Germany.
The castle is privately owned by the House of Hohenzollern, with two-thirds belonging to the Brandenburg-Prussian branch, and the balance by the Swabian branch.
Since 1952, the Princess Kira of Prussia Foundation has used the castle for an annual summer camp for children.
Whenever Prince George and his family are staying at the castle, the Prussian flag flies over the castle.
