This is what the LGU of Tadian emphasized and wanted to let the people know on their environmental concerns of preserving the eel in Cagubatan. It was almost a hundred years ago when the old folks first noticed this peculiar fish and were amazed by it. Through observation, the eel comes alone and after three years, when its already big, it disappears. After a couple of weeks another eel appears but now they are two. This is the routine observed by the community. There are people who try to visit the eel but unluckily they do not see it for it appears only to lucky people.
How do you know its another eel? we asked them. For the past three years, the eel which was here is one-eye blind said barangay councilman Martin Ladino of Cagubatan. Now, the eel which is currently living here is not and this biggest eel is expected to be leaving this year he added. The question of the community is where do these eels go? as they havent found any dead eels in nearby communities or have heard someone caught an eel for viand?
What is actually an eel? Eel is a snakelike bony fish of the worldwide order anguilliforms over 500 specie. Most specie is regime, occurring mainly in shallow waters and feeding on other fish and invertebrates. The freshwater eels migrate to the sea to breed and return to rivers and streamsEnchanted Eel. these is the explanation of Forester Joel T. Behis which is scientifically based. But people still wonder saying Cagubatan is very far away from the ocean and two weeks perhaps isnt enough time for them to travel. These things made the community call the eel
Before rainy season, a ritual is performed called Dolis where one (1) native pig, three (3) chickens and rice wine are needed. This ritual is a thanksgiving to Kabunyan for the blessings of abundant water found in the eels dwellings that made the community survive during the past El Niño and is supplying the nearby rice plantation. Traditionally, people contribute for the expenses but some people belonging to other religious sects opposed this practice and do not cooperate with the reason that it is Idolatry - the worship of a false God.
If only people realize how lucky Cagubatan is for having the enchanted eel then there would have been no problem. The ritual, though, goes on not minding the people who do not cooperate.
Joel T. Accos, Benjie Espejo, Wrexton Afidchao and Jude Accos, The DENR CAR representative who accompanied the LGU of Tadian, and the tourism staff advised each one to continue protecting the eel because respect to nature is respect to oneself they said. And people should be proud for of all the 144 barangays of MountainProvince, only Cagubatan has the eel.
The LGU of Cagubatan then agreed to protect the eel and come up with their tourism plan to promote the enchanted eel to which people will find a lot of mysteries behind it.

Halsema Highway: Sagada to Baguio, Part 2 (Buguias to Baguio)
This segment starts at Garden Breeze Hotel & Restaurant in Buguias where we have stopped for coffee break. Driving on Halsema highway has its own charm especially if there is fog.
Halsema Highway the third time around- twice Southbound & once Northbound. This road though not the best in terms of width nor condition has a that magic that keeps pulling at you. If you love mountain driving, then this must be in your bucket list.
The following Points of Interests were either visited or along the way:
• Buguias:
Is a 3rd class municipality in the province of Benguet. The municipality is home to the mummy of Apo Anno, one of the most revered and important folk hero in Benguet prior to Spanish arrival.
Buguias is primarily an agricultural town. It is one of the leading producers of highland vegetables, especially carrots in the province of Benguet. Most of the vegetables produced in the town are sold at the La Trinidad Vegetable Trading Post or are marketed to other parts of the country
Historical markers & shrine:
o Veteran Memorial Marker marks the liberation of Abatan and Buguias on July 27, 1945, that was fought between the Japanese Imperial Army and the combined Filipino and American ground troops. Through municipal council resolution No. 19, July 27, 1945 was declared as the Liberation Day and local holiday in the municipality. Festivals during this date include parades, programs and wreath-laying.
o The World War II 66th Infantry Shrine monument, located in Lengaoan along Halsema Highway, symbolizes the bravery of the combined Filipino and American soldiers who stood their ground defending the area and firing their cannons against the Japanese forces
o Burial Site of Apo Anno - The 12th century burial site, which was later used again for Apo Anno's reburial in 1984, is one of the most important cultural sites in Benguet. The burial site is home to the mummy of one of Benguet's folk heroes whose remains are still preserved in present time.
• Kabayan:
Is the site of centuries-old Ibaloi mummies buried inside caves scattered around its villages. The third highest mountain in the Philippines, Mount Pulag, is located in the territorial boundary of the vegetable farming town.
• Atok:
The highest point in the Philippine Highway System is located at Barangay Paoay along Halsema Highway, at 2,255 meters (7,400 ft) above sea level.
• Tublay is a 5th class municipality in the province of Benguet with 8 barangays. The topography is generally mountainous with an elevation of 1,400 meters (4,600 ft) above sea level.
• La Trinidad:
The municipality is known for its strawberry and vegetable plantations earning the title Strawberry Fields of the Philippines”. La Trinidad supplies most of the Philippines' strawberries and cut flowers which include roses. The La Trinidad Vegetable Trading Post is visited by wholesalers and traders of vegetables from other provinces.
n June 23, 2016, La Trinidad was highlighted in the media when the first and largest community artwork in the Philippines, the STOBOSA Hillside Homes Artwork was unveiled, featuring hillside houses within the sitios of Stonehill, Botiwtiw and Sadjap of Barangay Balili painted with sunflower and abstract designs.
• Baguio:
Baguio, on the Philippines’ Luzon island, is a mountain town of universities and resorts. Called the “City of Pines,” it’s particularly popular in summer due to unusually cooler weather. At its center is Burnham Park, with gardens and a lake. Nearby, Baguio Cathedral, completed in 1936, has a rose-hued exterior.

After of almost 12 hours land travel, we finally arrived in Sagada, part of the Mountain Province - Cordillera Region here in the Philippines.

Made a quick 3 days visit to my wife's grandmothers' ancestral home in Bangaan within the mountain province of Sagada (12-hour bus ride up north from Manila) for a mini family-reunion.
Temperature was roughly around 17 degrees and unfortunately it kept raining. The paths were slippery so we had not really explored much of the area during our stay (despite considering we were close to the famous Bomod-ok falls)
Nevertheless, I was still extremely happy to have finally fulfilled my grandmother-in law's request to visit her home town.
