Atomix 600 Targa Review
Atomix is a New Zealand company with big ambitions. Established in 2004 it now designs and builds a wide range of sports boats, fishing boats, RIBs, tenders and personal watercraft for the international market and they have been available in Australia for the past three years.
Since the arrival of the Atomix brand in Australia more than 100 modifications have been made to the superstructure to make it more suitable for our market.
But one thing that has not been changed is the hull that was designed by world-renown New Zealander Brett Bakewell-White to handle rough blue-water conditions.
BoatAdvice writer Steve Lague tested test one of the more popular models in the range, the Atomix 600 Targa, which is seen as an all rounder.
While it makes a good fishing platform for four people there are a few features like live bait tanks that are missing.
The cabin, which is set up so a portable toilet can be easily added, provides a great place for kids to have a nap during the day and is big enough for an overnight stay.
Like most fibreglass boats the Atomix has a fairly sharp deadrise to help it cut cleanly through the water and reverse chines to give it lift and stability.
But the Atomix also has two other unique features that make this an exceptional blue water boat. Firstly it has what Atomix calls a spray deflector, which is a 30mm lip that runs just under the gunnel and is designed to push any spray away from the boat. It also has portifino pods built into the transom, on either side of the motor, which push the boat onto the plane a lot quicker than a conventional hull and add to its stability at rest.
With a 150hp Mercury four-stroke engine on the back the Atomix performance was very strong. It took just a few seconds to get up on the plane and had a top speed of just under 40 knots.
At a cruising speed of 20 knots the engine was ticking over at 3400rpm and using 20.0-litres of fuel an hour.
The boat felt very stable, even when running side on to the swell and it was surprisingly dry for such an open design.
Pushing into the swell the ride was soft and when it did get air it landed nice and soft. Running downhill it tracked nice and straight. Steering was nice and light, making slow-speed manoeuvring easy. The boat turned in nicely when turning at speed.
The Atomix is a massed produced boat built in China but before you start to lose interest it is also one of the best-finished boats I have seen in a long while. It rides well, handles all types of conditions and it is dry. It is also extremely well priced with ready to go packages starting at $54,99. And if you are still worried about the fact it is built in China it also comes with a 10-year structural guarantee on the hull.

Tasmania (abbreviated as Tas and known colloquially as Tassie) is an island state, part of the Commonwealth of Australia, located 240 kilometres (150 mi) to the south of the Australian continent, separated by Bass Strait. The state includes the island of Tasmania, the 26th largest island in the world, and the surrounding 334 islands.[8] The state has a population of 507,626 (as of June 2010), of whom almost half reside in the greater Hobart precinct. Tasmania's area is 68,401 square kilometres (26,410 sq mi), of which the main island covers 62,409 square kilometres (24,096 sq mi).[9]
Tasmania is promoted as the natural state, the Island of Inspiration,[10] and A World Apart, Not A World Away owing to its large and relatively unspoiled natural environment. Almost 45% of Tasmania lies in reserves, national parks and World Heritage Sites.[11] The island is 364 kilometres (226 mi) long from its northernmost to its southernmost points, and 306 kilometres (190 mi) from west to east.
The state capital and largest city is Hobart, which encompasses the local government areas of City of Hobart, City of Glenorchy, and City of Clarence, while the satellite town of Kingston (part of the Municipality of Kingborough) is generally included in the Greater Hobart area.
The northernmost terrestrial point of the state of Tasmania is Boundary Islet, a nature reserve in Bass Strait which, due to a quirk of history, is shared with the state of Victoria.
The subantarctic Macquarie Island and its surrounding islands are also under the administration of Tasmania as a nature reserve and part of the Huon Valley Council local government area. The Bishop and Clerk Islets, about 37 km south of Macquarie Island, are the southernmost terrestrial point of the state of Tasmania, and the southernmost internationally recognised land in Australia.
During colonial times the cuisines of the British Isles were the standard in most areas of Tasmania. Tasmania now has a wide range of restaurants, in part due to the arrival of immigrants and changing cultural patterns. Scattered across Tasmania are many vineyards,[51] and Tasmanian beer brands such as Boags and Cascade are known and sold in Mainland Australia. King Island off the northwestern coast of Tasmania has a reputation for boutique cheeses[51] and dairy products. Tasmanians are also consumers of seafood,[51] such as crayfish, orange roughy, salmon[51] and oysters,[51] both farmed and wild.
To foster tourism, the state government encourages or supports several annual events in and around the island. The best known of these is the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, starting on Boxing Day in Sydney and usually arriving at Constitution Dock in Hobart around three to four days later, during the Taste of Tasmania, an annual food and wine festival. Other events include the road rally Targa Tasmania which attracts rally drivers from around the world and is staged all over the state, over five days. Rural or regional events include Agfest, a three-day agricultural show held at Carrick (just west of Launceston) in early May and the Royal Hobart Show and Royal Launceston Show, both held in October annually. Music events held in Tasmania include the Falls Festival at Marion Bay (a Victorian event now held in both Victoria and Tasmania on New Year's Eve), MS Fest is a charity music event held in Launceston, to raise money for those with multiple sclerosis. Recent additions to the state arts events calendar include the 10 Days on the Island arts festival, and MONA FOMA, run by David Walsh and curated by Brian Ritchie.
