Cape Verde Travel Guide - An African Adventure
Cape Verde is a country in West Africa. It comprises a group of islands of the Atlantic Ocean, west of Senegal. It is part of the region of Islands collectively known as Macaronesia. Cape Verde has won a positive reputation in promoting what is considered the most stable democracy in Africa, a standard of living higher than most African nations, and one of the most politically liberal nations on the continent, and in the world.
Jutting up from the Atlantic, some 500km west of Senegal, this stunning island chain has a captivating blend of mountains, beaches and peaceful seaside villages. On Santo Antão, craggy peaks hide piercing green valleys of flowers and sugar cane, ideal for epic hikes. São Vicente is home to the cultural capital of the islands, Mindelo, which throbs with bars and music clubs. On Sal and Maio, undulating windswept dunes merge with indigo-blue seas on unspoilt beaches of powdery white sand. Meanwhile, far-flung Fogo and Brava in the southwest offer their own enchantments, from surreal volcanic landscapes, to sparkling bays framed by towering peaks. Throw in the constant beat of music that Cabo Verde is famed for and the renowned morabeza (Creole for hospitality) of its people and you’ll see why many have come – and never left.
Cape Verde’s climate is tropical, with a warm, dry summer. As a part of the greater Sahel region of Africa precipitation is meager and falls between the months of June to February, peaking in September. Some islands see almost no rain, these are Sal, Boa Vista and Maio; these are arid. The islands with the most rain fall are Santiago, Fogo and Santo Antao, but are nonetheless semi-arid.
Cape Verde is formed by 10 main islands and about 8 islets. The main islands are :
Santo Antão
Great hiking.
São Vicente
With the cultural capital of Mindelo.
Santa Luzia
Santa Luzia is uninhabited but can be visited as a day trip from São Vicente.
São Nicolau
Rural mountainous island based on agriculture. A quiet and relaxed get away.
Sal
Has great beaches, water sports and resorts aplenty.
Boa Vista
Even nicer beaches. Great scuba diving
Maio
Even more nice beaches.
Santiago Island
The first island settled in Cape Verde. It holds the current capital Praia, the original capital Cidade Velha, and the bulk of the nation's population.
Fogo
A spectacular volcano island which erupted as recently as November 2014.
Brava
A small island only accessible by boat and is a great place to get away from it all.
There are plenty of hotels and guest houses throughout the archipelago. Though the largest hotels are based on the islands of Sal (Riu Funana and Garopa hotels--1000 rooms combined), and Boa Vista (Riu Touareg--881 rooms). Cape Verde has fantastic fresh seafood. Tuna is common, as is Wahoo - a white fleshed fish with similar texture.
There are ferry services between the islands. Depending on the distance between the islands you are going from and to, flying can be significantly shorter but also significantly more expensive.

Location
Cape Verde is a group of ten Islands in the Mid-Atlantic Ocean situated 450km of the coast of West Africa, south of the Canary Islands.
The archipelago includes 10 islands and 5 islets, divided into the windward (Barlavento) and leeward (Sotavento) groups.
Climate
Cape Verde temperatures average between 22-27 degrees, warm and dry all year round.
History
Discovered by Portuguese explorers around 1460, Cape Verde due to its privileged location became a trading centre for African slaves and later an important coaling and re-supply stop for whaling and transatlantic shipping.
Cape Verde became independent from Portugal in 1975 and is a stable multi-party parliamentary democracy with continued economic growth.
Language
The official language of the islands is Portuguese, which is the official written language, however Creole is used as the spoken language. Creole is based on African languages but with additions from several European languages
English, French and Italian are widely spoken in the tourist areas
Music
Traditional music is very popular on the islands and an important part of everyday life. Its roots are in Portugal, Brazil and Africa. The most famous Cape Verdian singer is Cesaria Evora known as 'the barefoot diva' Music critics hail her as the best performer of Morna, a genre often compared to blues and widely considered the national music of Cape Verde.
Flag
The rectangle of the flag is seen as a large blue field symbolizing the infinite space of the sea and sky. The ten yellow stars represent the 10 islands.
The circle of the stars symbolizes the Cape Verdean Nation and its unity. The circle in a certain sense is the world to which we are opened and that is opened to us; is the line of horizon which limits our freedom, that is the world map, but is also the mariner's compass and the helm of the navigators.
The strips are the road to the construction of the country. The blue is the sea and the sky.
The white is the peace we want. The red is our effort
Food & Drink
Cachupa is a great national dish and is the most famous dish from Cape Verde. Cachupa is a corn based meal that you can add anything to. Most poeple add different vegetables and meats (primarily pork). It generally has the consistency of a stew.
Cape Verde has a huge variety of fresh fish such as tuna, wahoo and garoupa, tropical fruits such as papaya, mango and bananas are also available.
Cape Verde's most famous beverage is the local Grogue, locally produced from distilled sugar cane, production mainly comes from the island of San Antao and Santiago
The local beer is called Strella, red and white wine is produced on the island of Fogo under the Cha brand, Coffee is also produced.
Cape Verde Economy
Cape Verde has few natural resources and the economy is dominated by services, such as light industry, agriculture, fishing and especially tourism.
Tourism has increased dramatically during the last five years, with direct flights from the UK and other major European countries.
Cape Verde has close economic and political ties to the European Union, and its currency is pegged to the euro.
In 2007 Cape Verde was upgraded from the least developed country to medium developed country and in 2008 became the 153rd member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO)
Cabo Verde (South-America) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Vacation travel video about destination Cabo Verde.
Cabo Verde is a tropical archipelago situated off the coast of Africa with rugged mountains, green valleys and arid deserts, an exotic island paradise set amid the Atlantic. In the north east of the islands is Sal, an island of both wind and sunshine and a strange and exciting world with a volcanic lunar landscape. On the other side of the island, Palmeira, otherwise known as Pedra Lume, is Sal’s most important port from which the whole of the island’s maritime trade is handled. Santiago lies in the south and is the largest island in the achipelago and is where the Portuguese, as the first settlers, set up a military station. The family genes and traditions of two continents have produced a population with various characteristics of both culture and lifestyle. The islands offer many kinds of fresh food as well as products from around the world. São Vicente is a centre of culture and its colourful mansions are reminiscent of the heyday of the original city. Explorer Diego Alfonso would not have dreamed that one day the port would become a large maritime coal storage depot indeed, the first overseas telephone cable was laid through it. Great explorers once sailed in this region where fishing and salt defined the islanders’ lives. All around, volcanic mountains, desert landscapes and tropical valleys. Each island is unique and each has its own special charm. Cabo Verde – dreamy islands of Light and Beauty!
