Indonesia -- Ternate Island Tour
Located in eastern Indonesia's North Maluku province, nestled on the west side of the large island of Halmehara is Ternate Island. Ternate is a small island, but has a large and important place in Indonesia's history dating back to the 1500's when Portuguese traders came here to the Spice Islands to establish a strong hold to monopolize the Spice trade. Our tour takes us around the island to visit several Portuguese forts, nutmeg and clove forests, including the oldest known clove tree (nearly 400 yrs old), 2 natural lakes, 2 beaches (1 deserted, 1 a favorite of school holiday visitors), and the torturous Burned Rocks area, which is a constant reminder that the island is dominated by the towering volcano, Gama Lama which can be seen from every side as you tour the island.
Thank you to the directors of the English schools, Ahmad Mahifa (Mr Bla Bla), from the L-PIA and Mr. Rusdi Karim and Mr.Samin Hamudu from the English Training Center for making our island tour possible by providing transportation, meals, and all the great student guides. Special thanks to Azzis, Samin, Jasmal, and Rusdi, with whom we became great friends...our gratitude for filling our stay with activities, unique experiences, opportunities to taste great Indonesian food, and for your personal assistance, (and for The Ladder ...LOL!). Filmed in January 2013.

While on vacation and sightseeing also attempting for a personal search on one of our potential ancestors', Johan Hendrik Agaatsz (VoC official), footsteps. He was killed in October 1783 during the Tidorese Revolution led by Sultan Nuku (King of Tidore) against the Dutch VoC and the Ternate King . King Nuku was later awarded the title as one of Indonesian National Heroes, .
Sambil liburan mencoba mencari jejak seseorang yg kemungkinan adalah salah satu leluhur kami, Johan Hendrik Agaatsz (perwira VoC) yg terbunuh di bulan Oktober 1783 sewaktu Revolusi Tidore yg dipimpin Sultan Nuku (Raja Tidore), melawan Belanda (VoC) dan Raja Ternate waktu itu. Sultan Nuku kemudian dimuliakan sebagai pahlawan Nasional.

(Kepulauan Kei)
All You Need to Know about the Kei Islands of Maluku
The Kei Islands are a group islands located roughly between Indonesian Papua and Australia. The islands are comprised of two main islands, Kei Besar (literally, “Big Kei”) and Kei Kecil (literally, “Small Kei”), as well as other small islands. Kei Kecil is popular among local Indonesians due to its beautiful and pristine beaches. However, due to its location in the far east of Indonesia, not many people are willing to visit this place. Flight tickets may be expensive and there are no direct flights from the capital city of Jakarta. This a blessing in disguise for people like me who try to avoid places with too many tourists. Welcome to paradise

We start the day with Soto Betawi- soto is an Indonesian soup and we head to local favourite Soto Roxy to sample their version. We order the soto campur which is filled with a mix of different cuts of meat (beef)- it’s spicy, slightly creamy from the addition of coconut milk and given a bit of texture from the addition of emping- belinjo nuts.
Next up we head to South Jakarta for one of Indonesia’s most famous dishes- gado gado. Gado gado is a boiled vegetable salad covered in a creamy peanut sauce which includes a touch of tamarind. This small street stall which is located outside some grand residences in South Jakarta serves up an amazing version.
We then head to Fatahilla Square to track down the street snack of kerak telur- a type of omelette that is cooked with sticky rice. Unfortunately we see our kerak telur take off down the street never to return after the police ask the street vendors to move on. Better luck next time!
We end with nasi uduk- a dish of coconut rice served with a number of different sides together with a peanut sambal. Creamy rice accompanied by fried chicken, stir fried kankung and beef. Delicious!
Where and what we ate:
Soto Betawi at Soto Roxy, Jalan Tidore No.2, RT. 01/ RW. 05, Cideng, Gambir, RT.1/RW.5, Cideng, Gambir, Kota Jakarta Pusat, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 10150, Indonesia. Open 6:00am to 2:00pm. Closed Sunday.
Gado Gado at Gado Gado Kertanegara, Jl. Kertanegara No.2, RT.3/RW.2, Selong, Kby. Baru, Kota Jakarta Selatan, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 12110, Indonesia. Open 10:00am to 3:00pm. Closed Sunday.
And we TRIED to eat Kerak Telur from the street food stands at Fatahilla Square...
Nasi Uduk at Nasi Uduk Kota Intan, Jl. Kyai Haji Samanhudi, Gambir, RT.1/RW.8, Ps. Baru, Sawah Besar, Kota Jakarta Pusat, Daerah Khusus Ibukota Jakarta 10120, Indonesia. Open daily 5:00pm to 2:00am.
