The Eastland region of the North Island is definitely one of those off-the-beaten-track road trips that is well worth taking if you have the time on your New Zealand itinerary! Today we are doing just that by taking a road trip of Eastland and visiting highlights like the Tolaga Bay Wharf and Maori church in Tikitiki along the Pacific Coast Highway in New Zealand.

We are still travelling the Gisborne region of New Zealand, otherwise known as Eastland, Tairawhiti Gisborne, the East Coast of New Zealand or the East Cape. The first stop on our East Cape travel itinerary is the East Cape Lighthouse where it is the one of the first places to see the first sunrise in the world. The East Cape Lighthouse is a New Zealand lighthouse you can’t miss.
Next, we check out the “historic tree” otherwise known as the oldest pohutakawa tree in New Zealand, the pohutukawa tree in Te Araroa. After that, it’s just a few awesome beaches and bays in the East Cape including Waihau Bay.

Today we are visiting the Whatatutu Marae in Gisborne and even staying the night in the Maori marae. If you want to experience staying in a marae, then this Gisborne marae is a great place to do it. We also get to visit and even help with the construction of a traditional Maori pa site.
After spending time staying in a pa site, we visit the Tarndale slip, the second largest landslip in the Southern Hemisphere and a humbling experience.

Bluff hill look out
- It's hard to put this into words. It's at a high point, you get about 200^o view of the sea and then there's also a pier. It's very nice and we took a lot of photos here
Karanghape Gorge
- This was an enjoyable about an hour and a halk walk. You go past 2 hanging bridges and a tunnel (bring some flashlight). You'll also walk around beside the gorge/river along the cliff side. It's a different kind of walk in the bush. I think you can also camp somewhere there but it's another hour or two?
Rere rock slide
- This looks scary when you first see it so we suggest you start half way down the slide and work your way from there. Unless of course, you're already the adventurous type of person then you'll definitely enjoy! Hopefully, you can swim as well as there are parts at the bottom where it's quite deep! Also, the water isn't really the cleanest, so you might want to refrain from getting some inside you!

- Worth every penny. Go early and stay for the day! We arrived kinda late so we didn't make the most of it ... There are definitely some regrets. Just be adventurous and try everything! you paid for it after all.

Tolaga Bay Wharf
- Very picturesque. It's a very very veryyyyy long wharf! Some people fish there and some jump off the wharf. Either way, whether you choose to just walk and enjoy it, fish or jump. It's worth visiting
East Cape Light house
- Worth the 800 steps and the way going there! You'll wander if you're on the right track but just keep going as it's definitely off road. There are cows along the way so just be careful. You'll walk past private property then there's a gate on the way there. We thought it wouldn't be a long walk (we didn't know we literally have to go to the top of the mountain, but yes ... it IS A light house, duh!) Anyway, just be prepared and probably bring some water. It'l take some time but still achievable. You can't go inside the light house though, which is a shame but just enjoy the views and give yourself a pat on the back for making it all the way to the top!
Napier
Boyyyyy, it wasn't featured here but this town is THE BOMB. I wish I took some time to take a photo of it and probably stop along the way too! So definitely put aside some time to enjoy here, get off the car and walk around!!!!
Where did we stay?
- We stayed in Gisborne (rented a luxury house via AirBnB) and also a van to get around. Figured that it would be best since we did a lot of driving. If you plan to go around the whole eastern part of NZ, it's probably best to make it to a week or two so you wont feel rushed and tired because it IS A LOT OF DRIVING. You'll get tired of being in the car all the time, but if you're used to it, then a 5 day trip should cover all of these areas.

After sliding down the natural waterslide in Gisborne, we head to the Rere Falls, a beautiful wide waterfall. Finally, on our Gisborne road trip itinerary is the Gisborne Wine Centre in Gisborne city where we taste local Gisborne wine.

Still, I had a fantastic time! No internet, no nothing but heaps of animals and nature!! What a shame I didn't catch the best moments on camera! but you have to go there yourself! It's very beautiful out there!

The East Coast of Singapore is largely residential and offers few sights as such; most visitors just cross it on their way from and to Changi Airport. For Singaporeans, on the other hand, the main attractions are 20 kilometres of white sandy beach and the food: this is the home of many of Singapore's culinary icons. The true home of Singapore's Malay community is in Geylang Serai, traces of Peranakan culture still linger in Katong, and the East Coast also offers Singapore's solitary flashback to the past, the rustic little island of Pulau Ubin.

Tourist literature usually hawks the restored (and, in the daytime, near-empty) Arab Street near Bugis, but Geylang Serai is the true home of Singapore's Malay community. Especially during the Islamic month of Ramadan leading up to Hari Raya Puasa (Eid ul-Fitr), the entire area lights up in celebration as people eat and shop in the evenings after the sun goes down.
Changi Chapel and Museum, 1000 Upper Changi Road North (Bus 29 from Tampines MRT or bus 2 from Tanah Merah), . 9:30AM to 4:30PM daily. Singapore's memorial to the notorious WW2 Japanese POW camp, the setting of James Clavell's King Rat. The current site is a reconstruction and in a different location, but contains a replica of the original chapel and informative exhibits about the squalid conditions of the prison. Free.
Malay Village, 39 Geylang Serai. 10AM to 10PM. A rather artificial recreation of Malay kampong (village) life in the heart of Geylang. The Malay Village has since been torn down to make way for a new civic centre and plaza as part of the Government’s efforts to rejuvenate the area while preserving its local character. $10.
The East Coast's second area of historical interest is Katong and Joo Chiat, which retain a smattering of traditional shophouses and shops specializing in Peranakan crafts and food. The area is a fairly lengthy hike from Eunos, the nearest MRT station, but can be reached by eg. bus 12 from Bugis. There is also plenty of great food in the area.
Kim Choo, 109/111 East Coast Road, ☎ +65-67412125, . Housed in an old Peranakan shophouse, Singaporeans know this shop best for its dumplings (kueh chang), but they've opened up their second story for visitors and also operate a Peranakan restaurant and gift shop with pottery, beadwork, kebayas and more. While most of what you see comes from China (as it did even back in the old days), some of their wares are still made in Singapore, and they conduct regular cooking and arts classes.
Koon Seng Road. A section of this short street, between Joo Chiat and Still Rds, has what are probably Singapore's prettiest shophouses. Houses on one side of the street are multicolored, while the other has more soberly decorated shophouses with elaborate flower-themed curlicues.
Dakota Crescent, (Mountbatten MRT Station). Recently featured on Ch5's On the Red Dot television programme, this tiny estate is a slice of yesteryear Singapore that is hard to find anywhere else on the island. Built in the 1950s, the estate has a retro-looking playground and charming low-rise buildings. While it's under the radar for now, the area is an interesting alternative to increasingly gentrified Tiong Bahru.
